SpinnerofTales -> Obama Takes On The Deficit (11/14/2009 6:42:09 AM)

Whether it is because he realizes, as he said he did in his campaign, that the deficit is a problem that must be addressed or whether he is listening to the concerns of the voters, it seems that President Obama is planning to take some firm action to get federal spending under control.

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2009/11/14/obama_pushes_domestic_spending_cuts/

I think this is a good step and am glad to see that, once again, he is not afraid to take action on matters that need action taken. WTG Barry!

Maybe the president can beg the Emperor of Japan for help in covering his massive deficits?

If we have to go begging it is to china.

Its just the typical election year promise (emphasis on the word next in the AP headline mine):

quote:

Obama wants domestic spending cuts in next budget

WASHINGTON — (AP) The Obama administration, mindful of public anxiety over the government's mushrooming debt, is shifting emphasis from big-spending policies to deficit reduction. Domestic agencies have been told to brace for a spending freeze or cuts of up to 5 percent as part of a midterm election-year push to rein in record budget shortfalls.

Yet with the economy still in distress and unemployment pushing past 10 percent, prospects for making a dent in a trillion-dollar-plus annual deficit seem slight. And since the Pentagon and Department of Veterans Affairs would likely be shielded from such cuts, overtures toward trimming the deficit may hold more symbolic value than substance.

President Barack Obama is expected to make post-recession spending restraint a key theme of his State of the Union address in January and an important element of the budget he submits to Congress a few weeks later. He is under increasing pressure, including from moderate and conservative members of his own party, to show he is serious about tackling a deficit that has become both an economic and political liability.

As I said the first time Obama promised to tackle the deficit (while spending many hundreds of billions of dollars), the promises remind me of a fat  kid saying "I'll start dieting next week, promise!" as he takes another bite of his massive triple cheeseburger.

So now honoring a Japanese custom as part of protocol is something else to criticize him about?

A version of the sign you see going into a glass shop; he created it he should address it.

Wonder how many times any rhetoric associated with it will include something similar to "it was Bush's fault!"? There is always a 'because' given as an excuse. The buck never stops on any Administration desk. Somehow its never because of anything the Administration has done - its always something or someone else they either didn't consider or didn't think was "that bad". Forgetting how poorly that reflects on their abilities.

So many 'becauses'
  • Because this Administration has done nothing?
  • Because all they've been able to do is focus on the mess they were left?
  • Because they don't have any ideas which could turn it around?
  • Because they've got too many entitlements promised to special interests which got them elected?

From the article, words defining not only the specific initiative, but the Administration:
quote:

more symbolic value than substance

Oh, so you like this new tradition of Presidents groveling before foreigners?

I think it just proves that he's a much bigger fool than anyone had realized.

I will refrain from showing the clip of big bush bowing to the Japanese prime minister after puking on him.

I would have just put the picture in but cant figure out how to get it in here. copy paste doesnt work

Mercnbeth -> RE: Obama Takes On The Deficit (11/14/2009 7:52:09 AM)

Why an administration of either party can get away with "more symbolic value than substance" is being documented by the debate on the critical issue of 'who bowed first'. An illustration of the hopelessness of relying on the US electorate to affect change.

Bush shouldn't do it either. They're not gods they're men. If its a Japanese tradition thats fine, however we are not Japanese.

RML lie watch, number 1 of the day.

He isnt bowing, a medallion is being put over his neck.

Sanity -> RE: Obama Takes On The Deficit (11/14/2009 7:55:20 AM)

I guess you can see that if you're aware of what to look for....

I wonder, did that cause a huge stir around the Liberal blogosphere when Bush accepted that medal in that manner?

Sanity;

We expect courtesy from our allies, why shouldn't they expect courtesy from us?

Or are you still of the school we run around and say fuck your customs asshole, we're american, and we don't give a fiddlers fuck about the way you jappos operate, here's what's gonna happen.

Yeah, and Merc;

Sanity -> RE: Obama Takes On The Deficit (11/14/2009 8:01:59 AM)

How many men do you bow down before mnot? Would you bow before me if I commanded you to, or if you saw others do it?

Then you don't understand international protocol.

Bowing in Japanese custom is the same as shaking hands is to us.

Do foreign leaders who come here not honor our custom by shaking hands?  Why should we not honor theirs when traveling to a foreign country?

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama Takes On The Deficit (11/14/2009 8:11:14 AM)

Obama bows, Bush kisses and holds hands.... ~shrugs~

And bowing to accept.

Or do the pictures lie as well.

I had the restraint not to post the ones of him holding hands with the Saudi King as they skipped down the yellow brick road, but I'll be happy to remedy that if you like.
