Not that i expect you to recall, but i have started one thread on Sarah, that i can recall. I supported the fact that i didnt believe her children were open to the harrassment and belittlement they received. I also dont believe its a good thing to belittle our President for upholding the customs of other countries while visiting them. Its no skin off his nose to offer a bow. But, in a country filled with customs and traditions regarding respect, him not bowing can be seen as a slight of tremendous magnitude.

Uh, it's pretty clear. Even when they start shaking hands, Tokugawa is bending over at the waist some. I would consider that bowing, especially considering the obvious size difference. Obama is a clear 8" taller. Tokugawa wasn't bending forward at the waist to reach a bit higher to shake hands. Unless, of course, he has insanely horrid depth perception.

Sorry, but its just not there, taz. No matter how much you have to believe, no amount of faith will ever make that Emperor bow. It could be that the Emperor knows the standard protocol even though that president doesn't. And thats what it is, protocol. Its just a historic fact, presidents don't bow down before kings, tyrants, dictators or emperors. You're truly beginning to strike me as being unstable. And as far as leaning wayyyyy to the left, tell me what the view is like from there if you do.

If you're serious about respecting someone's customs, then you need to know what they are. Case in point, in Japanese culture you do NOT bow and shake hands at the same time. You bow with your hands at your sides (if you're a man). And it matters very damn much how deeply (and for how long) you bow. I don't know what Obama's keepers do with their time, but they sure haven't been much fucking use when it come to prepping him on foreign customs. headdesk Like talking to a wall... Tazzy was right. You just have no idea how to admit you may just be wrong about something. One must be forward to bow. That's how it works. Is he leaning down and licking his own shoes? No. At his age, I doubt he could anyway (no offense to those about that age here, of course). And I'd hardly say I'm arguing it as hard as you. I'm just going off of simple and obvious posture and motions. I personally couldn't care less if Obama bit Tokugawa's forehead, if that's the custom. And that's the thing, it's the custom. Obama is a visitor, a guest, their guest. God forbid he show some decorum and respect. Maybe he should have just thrown up on Tokugawa, a'la Bush I. There's some good manners right there I tells ya.
