DomImus -> USPS posts $3.8B loss for 2009 (11/16/2009 4:07:53 PM)

Earlier this year President Obama compared government run or optioned health care in the mix with private health care insurers to the scenario of the United States Postal Service existing alongside UPS and FedEx. His handlers cringed while his opponents chuckled. I guess there will be more cringing and chuckling today with this:

USPS posts $3.8 Billion Loss for 2009

If they end Saturday mail delivery does that mean there will be no Saturday health care?

What an interesting citation and a fine comparison of apples and oranges. Of course, this little tidbit might be an interesting contrast:
http://www.sphere.com/2009/11/16/trauma-victims-face-far-worse-odds-when-uninsured-study-says/

It seems that uninsured trauma victims have an 89% higher death rate than insured trauma victims, despite the laws mandating emergency treatment for all.

But hey, let's not try to fix the system. It isn't really broken, is it?

I think Sat delivery could be cut rather then that amount being a postage increase.

I use this service alot tho.  I do like Sat delivery.

As bad as this may sound- maybe we should delete the union and outsource to workers.  Everyone else has been.

One thing nice about my old place is the mail came pretty early in the day.   But it arrives later here.  Too bad I could not get the route rotated so that they reverse the streets and I can then receive  my mail earlier.

They got rid of numerous drop boxes here in this town.  So one almost has to leave the mail on the personal mail box to mail it.  Unless one wants to go to the post office which is a hastle.

I don't know..but I think it's one of those "the government can't do anything right so they will screw us up through incompetence so we should let private industrys screw us up intentionally since they are more efficient at it." things

pahunkboy -> RE: USPS posts $3.8B loss for 2009 (11/16/2009 4:25:35 PM)

PS- fuel costs dropped and some say we are experiencing DEflation.   So they sure have bumbled the deflation and lower fuel costs!!!

tazzygirl -> RE: USPS posts $3.8B loss for 2009 (11/16/2009 4:28:59 PM)

Did anyone take into consideration that businesses are moving progressively away from the USPS. Not to mention that electronic mail has replaced letter writting. There are numerous reasons why the PS is losing money.

Mercnbeth -> RE: USPS posts $3.8B loss for 2009 (11/16/2009 4:41:43 PM)

Government efficiency and employee managment disclosed.

How can they deny it? The Federal Times reports that:The U.S. Postal Service, struggling with a massive deficit caused by plummeting mail volume, spends more than a million dollars each week to pay thousands of employees to sit in empty rooms and do nothing...(T)hey sit some for a few hours, others for entire shifts. Postal union officials estimate some 15,000 employees have spent time on standby this year. They spend their days holed up in rooms conference rooms, break rooms, occasionally 12-foot-by-8-foot storage closets that the Postal Service dubs resource rooms. Postal employees use more colorful names, like holding pens and blue rooms. Its just a small, empty room. Its awful, said one mail processing clerk who has spent four weeks on standby time this summer. Most of us bring books, word puzzles. Sometimes we just sleep.

Employees of the U.S. Postal Service, an agency facing a $7 billion deficit this year, average a whopping 45,000 hours of idle time every weekat an annual cost of about $50 million. The reason for this sudden influx of downtime? That would be a combination of a 12.6% drop in mail volume over the past year, and a collective bargaining agreement that prohibits postal workers from being laid off or reassigned.

Or maybe its no Wednesday health care so the postal workers can get services on Saturday and we all know those rich doctors all play golf on Wednesday.

I dont buy it. There is a huge subjective factor in the comparison of severity of injuries for one thing.

The study, published today in the Archives of Surgery, examines the survival rates for patients brought to about 900 U.S. trauma centers between 2002 and 2006, analyzing some 690,000 patients who had suffered penetrating trauma -- such as wounds inflicted by a gun or knife -- or blunt trauma from vehicle crashes and falls. Earlier research found 18,000 extra deaths a year among uninsured victims of such injuries. Rosen and the other researchers chose to focus on the 18-to-30-year-old subset because they had fewer existing conditions -- comorbidity -- that muddy the evaluation of the cause of death.

I think they did a good job at narrowing the injury field as well as removing as much of the comorbidity as possible with the age group. No research is ever 100% error proof.

Did anyone consider that GM lost so much money because of the drop in volume of cars sold? Did anyone consider that banks lost money because the mortgage market they were forced into couldnt make their payments?

Not on this board they didnt. Apples to apples.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: USPS posts $3.8B loss for 2009 (11/16/2009 5:22:36 PM)

I'll tell you why the post office is losing money, its because they think they are gods (the ones that work in the actual office are the worst). We spend alot shipping crap, and get zero respect from them. They bitch if the shipping dates don't conform with their stupid policies, as if the scan time of the package wasn't enough to update their system. UPS, and FEDEX, you print the label and can drop it off whenever.

They also always look at you cross eyed if your delivery guy has to pick up like 30 boxes or something. (Sometimes have them pick up sometimes not) Sorry... Dude, you like to get paid right, they should be happy, fedex and UPS never do that, they actually like getting more business.  We don't do enough business with the USPS to get a "big boy" service, but do enough to pay a salary, they handle that market poorly.

The only thing I use the Post office for is flat-rate boxes, or flat rate envelopes, which are progressively becoming less of a good deal all the time.

The money going forward as far as mail is concerned is packages, they are only now trying to play catchup in that regard in terms of tracking and whatnot, there pricing for everything is higher except in some instances when you can use flat rate boxes or envelopes, even their parcel post (ultra slow) is most of the time more expensive than UPS.

If the USPS with its massive infrastructure, huge embedded footprint can't figure out how to deliver "large" packages at the same or lower price than UPS they'll go broke. They should be able to do it, UPS does it, FEDEX does it.
