Moonhead, Blairs view now isnt the same as when he was first elected. he vowed to get us more involved with the EU, and he did. those who voted for him shouldnt now be moaning. He did what he said he would do, except for holding a referendum. Your constant issues with the US are nothing more than that, your issues. They certainly dont have anything to do with my views, as low as they are, of the EU. You actually hit the nail on the head about France and Germany, they both try and use the EU for their own purposes, so quit telling me the EU is for the common good, as you have just proved it isnt. It is good only for those at the top of the food chain.

Fair enough, but you miss my point: we'd be a lot higher up the foodchain ourselves if every PM we've had since Ted Heath hadn't viewed the EU as an embarrassment and an inconvenience.

Maybe if De Gaulle had let us in sooner, things would be different too. France vetoed our entry some ten years before we finally joined so the suspicions of those in the UK are understandable. My view is this, if we indeed had a common market, with common aims and a level playing field, it would be okay. At present not only is that far from the case, but the whole place has become a largely unelected bureaucracy, as Lady E first pointed out.

True, but that always looks more like a self inflicted problem than anything else, and as I've said, I'd much sooner lose sovereignity to Brussels than Washington. (The fact that most of the rest of Europe hates us probably doesn't help a lot, mind.)
