Aneirin -> Post Piercing Yukkiness ? (11/21/2009 7:45:13 AM)

I just want to ask, about post piercings, the yukky crispy stuff that is exuded from the piercing around the jewellery and acts like glue, does that ever quit ?

I have had my first piercings about four months now, and I am cleaning this yuk off twice daily, for the reason the piercer told me to do so, and the fact that the glue type consistency glues the jewellery, so it does'nt move, an annoyance when the jewellery is caught by something, it hurts and continues to do so for a few days, whereas before, it was fine and not hurting.

masmiss -> RE: Post Piercing Yukkiness ? (11/21/2009 7:55:24 AM)

you've been cleaning the yukky stuff off for four months?  Sounds like it might be infected.  A healed piercing doesn't drain for months.  Try using antibiotic ointment twice a day for a couple weeks.  If that doesn't help you really should see a doctor.  They see this stuff all the time.

Eekk... get thee to a doc A.  4 months is far too long and knowing where the piercings are, you should have them looked at.
Use cooled boiled water to clean in the meantime.

I do, I clean daily , usually morning and night, with cooled boiled water and sea salt solution, or if in a rush use pharmacy grade saline. There is no reddening or other obvious signs of infection, just the goo migrating out and drying daily. When I first had the piercings, I was told by the piercer that goo would come out, but it didn't start until a month or two later. The only pain I have, is when I catch them with something, usually the steel watch bracelet, that catches hold of the thing and yanks it, the goo glue stops the training jewellery from moving, and so the skin is pulled in the direction my hand is going.

When I do clean the dried goo off, everything is fine, the jewellery moves, both around and through, but I only do this, if I have cleaned the bar projections thoroughly first. The piercer said to just wash with saline, and to avoid other preparations, so am just doing what am told.

When I clean, I use a new q-tip for each hole, so, four q-tips (and with soap and water washed hands) so as not to transfer any infection if present to where it is not needed.

These are my first piercings, so, it is all new to me what goes on.

Have you taken the piercings out yet?

When I take mine out and leave it a while, when it goes back in and the hole has tightened, then it can weep a bit with infection and I just use cooled boiled water with salt for about a week and it's fine.  But yours sound infected and just need to re-heal.  Keep the bathing up, increase it even.  But keep them dry too.  They should not be hurting at all - not even if they get caught.  Maybe a pull or something, but not hurting.

Master has the same as you as you know, his have never acted that way.

Aneirin -> RE: Post Piercing Yukkiness ? (11/21/2009 10:33:04 AM)

No, I have not taken the piercings out yet, I though as it seems to be goo' ing, they are not healed yet. Looking now, the goo is a white crusty formation, sometimes with a tinge of pink and sometimes what looks like brown, but most often, just white.

But, I had heard and read that nipple piercings can take a long time to heal, and a particularly long time healing with women, due to well, they project further.

Llyren -> RE: Post Piercing Yukkiness ? (11/21/2009 11:32:31 AM)

Are you twirling them several times daily?  You might want to switch to rubbing alcohol for cleaning to see if that helps.  Some piercings just don't ever heal properly.  I tried getting a third piercing in my ear, and it never did heal, and when I finally removed the earring in disgust, it was completely healed closed in a few days.  On the other side of the spectrum, I have a friend who just had a hood piercing, and it doesn't hurt a bit, and after a week,  there's no swelling or goo or anything.

CalifChick -> RE: Post Piercing Yukkiness ? (11/21/2009 12:04:32 PM)

If the material is clear, it's lymph fluid.  If it's not clear, it's infected (unless it's clear but pink-tinged).  See a doctor.  My body doesn't heal piercings.  After my third attempt at having my ears pierced, my doctor told me to just stop.

Mention it to the doc when you go, but also go back and see the person who did it and get them to have a look.  They will be able to tell you if its not healing, or whether you have an infection and advise you.

Well, going back to see the piercer, was going to be my first port of call, before I go near the doc and their usual disapproving advice on self mutilation.

I don't touch the things unless cleaning them, and I do not rotate them in the hole. To note, my first piercings are nipple piercings, and I have straight bars fitted. At first, the first month, the bar ball ends rested against the holes, meaning the flesh was swelled enough to take up the bar, but now I have  a couple of millimeters of bar either side before the ball ends, the flesh swelling has subsided. The stuff that appears on the bars, is generally white, but occaisionally very slightly tinged with pink, so I take this to be lymph fluid. Other than the goo glue, I have no problems, unless I catch the piercings on something. But what it has done for me, is give me sensitivity in the nipple area, where before, there was none, a whole new experience, which I do like.

Hi Aneirin

Everyone has given very good advice. I am also pretty stubborn. I have several piercing; I even had a web piercing on my left hand for several years. For me this is what I learned. Sea Salt is wonderful. But used too much it can also kill the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria. The area you are using the sea salt will work over time to replace the good bacteria. So I always used it once, very warm water with the sea salt, drawn the infection out. Then stop using it for awhile. Then I just used the white antibacterial Dial soap. That worked great for me every time.

With a nipple piercing I would suggest a ring to begin with, the crusty's can be easily removed with out irritating the wound. You can then also roll the ring easier.(this also helps the healing process) If you are sending the crusty stuff back into the piercing it will highly irritate it. And if you are a stomach sleeper you could also be pulling on it in your sleep. It sounds like either your body isn’t healing from the piercing, which as some have mentioned happens. Or it is being too irritated to heal properly.

I would also try a lil Betadine. It is used in hospitals. And isn’t as drying as Alcohol or Peroxide. Betadine will stain. But I use it before the other two.

Good luck, I hope it heals fast(er) for you.
Elan

To be fair, I did wonder about the salt, yes, a good cleaning solution, but salt also dries things out, it is fab stuff when drying skinned rabbit skins, so, maybe I am using too much salt, or the salt, is too much. When showering I don't clean with salt, they get the run off from my hair, which is mild shampoo and I have no problems, so, I wonder, might it be the salt drying the piercing out too much, with the obvious result, dried skin cracks, so fails to heal.

I do hear what you say about the bacteria issue though, and do thank you for the advice you offered, it with all that others have kindly said, will be considered, but am thinking to lay off the salt a bit, perhaps use it every other day, or something, see how it does.

I had one nipple piercing that was still doing what yours are doing 6 months after the piercing.  I did some research and found out that there could possibly be a microscopic flaw in the jewelry.  I went back to my piercer and talked to him about it.  He decided to change out the jewelry just in case.  Three days later the discharge was gone and has been gone for 2 years now.

ShellyD -> RE: Post Piercing Yukkiness ? (11/22/2009 5:27:13 AM)

It sounds like 'lymph' fluid to me, which dries and becomes a 'crustie'. A few years ago I could waffle on for hours about piercings and thier healing.

It is possible that it is a 'mechanical' injury, you mention knocking/sleeping on your belly etc. This could be frequently aggravating the newly growing skin/scar.

It could also be 'chemical' type injury to the new skin tissue, too strong cleaning agents, not fully rinsing. Or it could be your body interacting with metal. Although Surgical Stainless Steel is supposed to be the most compatible with body tissue, I found my experience for prolonged healing problems were greatly alleviated by having pure gold jewellry made. Mind you I have heard of people having the same reaction to gold!!! go figure lol

Lastly, the recipe for 'normal saline' is 1/4 teaspoon plain sea salt (no iodine, the type you crush in a grinder) to 250 mls (1 cup) cooled boiled water.

It is comforting to dangle the bits in warm saline soaks ie a glass/plastic cup of water and bend forward to lean body part into, or have a pad of gauze soaked and kept wet and warm with top ups of saline solution.

Good luck, some do well by persevering, some need to abandon the piercing, you will know when if you do cos you just get sick to death of it and it's problems.

Never remove a jewellry if it becomes an abcess as the metal then acts as a draining wick. Too many doctors dont know much about piercings and try to get them out if an abcess forms...try to stop this. Also, LEAVE IT ALONE unless you have washed your hands!!!! That is about the end of my brain tonight...hope some of it helps.

Just an update, I have curtailed the use of the salt for a bit, and the draining appears to have stopped, also less of the stinging, so maybe it was too much saline. I will wait and see.

Just don't wait too long, you don't want an infection to get out of hand. [:)]

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: Post Piercing Yukkiness ? (11/23/2009 8:25:12 PM)

Honestly, it depends on the piercing. Some piercings will exude protein discharge for a long, long time. I have an ear piercing (lobe) that is still producing exudate after 35 years (I had them pierced when I was 12), and a nipple piercing that still crusts up if I don't clean it regularly, after 10 years.

Before you clean your piercing, soak it for 10 minutes or so in water with sea salt. That will soften the stuff that is stuck to your jewelry so the crunchy stuff will wipe right off and not hurt when you try to move the rings.

If a piercing is infected, there are definite signs. The exudate is colored... either yellow or green... and the area is red and inflamed and -very- hot and sore to the touch. If -any- of those signs are present, it's an infection and needs to be treated, but I've been getting piercings for 15 years (and have a daughter who is a pro piercer) and am pretty comfortable saying that different piercings and different people have exudate and heal at different rates. Also, jewelry can make a difference. I have bilateral piercings for most of my insertions, though, and it is often only one side of the body that continues to exudate over time. For me, it is the piercings on my left side that tend to continue to produce a lot of protein discharge over time.

Hope this helps.

Calla

It sounds like you are taking good care of the external part of the cleaning very well.
It could quite possibly be the jewelry you are wearing.  Infection from plastic or cheap metal can rot inside your skin  and you not  be able to see it visually unless you take out the jewelry( which will be very painful)   Try to purchase something quality, like titanium or surgical steel.  alos some antibiotic ointment stay away from peroxide and rubbing alcohol they tend to over dry and not heal the infection. speedy healing.
good luck to you.

Aneirin -> RE: Post Piercing Yukkiness ? (11/24/2009 12:05:59 AM)

Nope, no swelling, no redness , nor is the discharge yellowygreen, just white but sometimes tinged with pink and one time brown, but I suspect that might have been after I caught the piercing with my watch strap, yanking it and my tit sideways.

I have titanium bars fitted, I was told training bars, ( over long ), just until it's finished healing, when I may change to jewellery of my choice. Bars were what the piercer uses for piercings, his reason being the wound is straight and heals better, cool, fine, that will do me, as bars were my eventual preference anyway.

I am deciding to do the saline wash every other day, and the day in between, just boiled water, of soap run off from the shower, and see how it goes, but I suspect my problem, was too much salt, and I did know before I had the piercings, nipple piercings can take a long time to heal, and I was also told about that by the piercer, with raised eyebrows at the choice of area for my first piercings, but then I always do things different.

GreedyTop -> RE: Post Piercing Yukkiness ? (11/24/2009 12:12:45 AM)

sea salt. Always worked great for me.  Nipple piercings took longer to heal than anything.
