LadyEllen -> The new Iraq Enquiry (11/24/2009 2:18:26 PM)

At the risk of dragging it all up again, the new Iraq Enquiry got underway today in London - and with some interesting testimony for day one that promises much for the remainder.

It seems Bush & Co was all out for regime change for Iraq in early 2001, months before 911. The State Dept asked the Brits to raise the issue during the regular bilateral meetings, in order to have the notion shot down and keep Bush & Co in check.

The Brits obliged, remarking that regime change would be illegal and that Saddam was no threat whatever, being contained by years of sanctions that had reduced his offensive capability to zero. The State Dept, backed by the Brits, scuppered the avowed intents of the new President and his associates.

Yet not long after 911, the Brits reported that Saddam apparently had developed the capacity to attack his neighbours within 45 minutes with terrible WMDs, was in league with Bin Laden and regime change had become perfectly legal.

So the Bush administration was already long since decided on an invasion of Iraq to dethrone Saddam, and despite everyone else being convinced it was a bad idea, if not a stupid one, the tide of 911 swept all before it, skilfully and deliberately aided by one Tony Blair, who it would seem has been shown to be a liar not only to the British people and the world, but before the British Parliament.

More to come I'm sure; it will all be on the BBC night after night.

I'm loving this, to be honest.

LadyEllen -> RE: The new Iraq Enquiry (11/24/2009 2:24:42 PM)

I am and I'm not. I have mixed feelings in all this - I want the truth, but in some ways it would be better if the truth were something other than I suspect it will be shown to be, reducing as it will the standing of this country and threatening as it will the safety of me and mine when a few hotheads more are recruited to terrorism because of it.

all of the information presented so far is somewhat common knowledge already.

Nothing we didnt know or suspect. I was okay with the action in Afghanistan but not Iraq. Blair and co let down the people of the UK. The chairman of the inquiry said he wouldnt hold back on naming those responsible, time will tell.

Agreed Ron, the reason most of us are pleased this new inquiry is taking place, is it shows the people of the UK wont let the matter drop. Brown must be hoping it shows him in a good light, what price on the initial report not being issued until after the election though.

LadyEllen -> RE: The new Iraq Enquiry (11/24/2009 2:29:53 PM)

I would disagree Ron - all of the above was common perception certainly, but now we have it from the horses' mouths - those who were there and heard, read and saw what went on - in a public forum.

Since 9/11 had nothing to do with Iraq and it was never claimed to be so, why would it be a surprise or a condemnation that his administration was interested in pursuing regime change? They Clinton administration had exactly the same interest in regime change, and received exactly the same advice that GWB did, and took exactly the same actions as GWB...ie did nothing. GWB didnt act until every intelligence agency in the world, and Saddam himself said he had WMDs, and nobody to this day disputes that even if he did destrpy all of them, he was quite capable of having them built.

True enough. I wonder if the fact that the Trident contract was coming up for renewal will be mentioned?

everyone besides you disputes it, and the point is and always has been that it is manufactured evidence, inveigled by the W administration.

and we know why saddam was talking wmds, because of the situation we put him in with Iran.

Well, at least upon hearing this, Obama has pledged to 'finish the job', alternately titled 'stay the course' or 'bow to the same masters as Clinton, Bush etc'. Its funny to hear WillBeUrDaddy say that Clinton had it in for Saddam just like Bush did, and that's because they're given briefings from the same Pentagon sources, sources that do not come and go every 4 or 8 years. Of course the truth eventually come out, but now that we've thrown as much money and power to the same tyrants who caused all of this, the truth no longer matters does it? Nobody's going to rescind any of the Patriot Acts, or reverse any military and law enforcement budgets because of what comes out at those meetings. You'll just see a little story here and there, and then it'll be yesterday's news. Another day in paradise, another empire falls, at least we'll have our proud history right?

Where willbeur is concerned LadyEllan...choose the fall about laughing option......when one considers how often he posts ....exploding could be quite troublesome....who has the time to explode that often.

Why is it funny? You do realize that most people here are in denial that Clinton was also pursuing regime change?

And if this country falls, it will be because of asinine policies that rescind the Patriot Act and reduce miltiary budgets, not the other way around.

Ironic how the right want taxes to pay for military budgets but not for health care in the USA.

Was is that ironic? The military is the role of the government, health care isnt.

It's not like they have a clue how they can pay for military budgets, either, hence the huge Bush deficit.

LadyEllen -> RE: The new Iraq Enquiry (11/24/2009 3:14:33 PM)

The US Constitution would seem to indicate that the one thing the government is absolutely not for, is to provide for the funding of a military. If the government were to do so, then how should the people seek their rights in the last resort, faced by the military fielded by the government at the expense of the people?

Say who ? This may come as a shock but the people should decide what is and isnt the role of the Government. Didnt the election result teach you anything ?
