You have to give the Americans one thing...they do sure know how to throw a mean day. Almost makes it worth becoming American for...still I am not sure if you have anything on a good old fashioned Australian BBQ.

I would have to test a Thanksgiving out to know which is better.

Ambrosia?  The whipped cream thing with the pineapple and cherries and coconut and such?  If I'm thinking the right thing, that is...  I haven't had that in YEARS!  Oh god that sounds good!  I may have to add that into the mix for the Christmas feast-ival.  Think my list looks insane now?  You should come by then.  We're talking Bacchanalian in scope.

Not that I love the holiday season or anything, mind you...  I also need a second stove/oven.  >.<

EDIT: to add... Fry bread has been requested for the Saturday menu too. :)

Yes, but sans the coconut for me.

We had:
Appetizers - hot artichoke spread and cold whitefish salad on crackers
Turkey, gravy, string beans with cherry tomatoes, pearl onions in balsamic vinegar sauce.
Stuffing was with chestnuts, leeks and portobellos instead of classic sausage because my kosher cousins were supposed to come but she's stuck in London for another week, working.
Yam casserole.
My twice baked potatoes with roast garlic, butter, sour cream, cheddar cheese. My son wants me to try it with bacon for next time. My mother's original recipe for this was bake potatoes, remove insides and add enough butter to turn potatoes yellow, then enough sour cream to turn them white again. Rich is an understatement.

Dessert: Homemade flan. Bought pumpkin cheesecake and apple pie. My homemade cookie tray: milk chocolate biscotti, chocolate chip and toffee chip mandelbrot, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter blossoms.

There should have been pecan shortbread but my son ate the entire tray shortly after it was made. Ah to have the digestive system of a 16 year old boy!

RS!  How you been?  Haven't seen you floating around for ages!  Happy Thanksgiving, albeit a day late.  Here's hoping you ended up even more stuffed than the bird.  Just as it should be. :)

EDIT:  Because I just woke up too and didn't notice that was not actually RS.  Either way though... :)

Hi ya BK . . .
All is well but apparently my type font secretly turns purple when I am not looking.
Turkeyday was awesome and everhope's first sweet potato pie came out great! I'll have her post the recipe.

Living on leftovers today and loving it!

This is unfair. My wee brother is gay, we've been having holiday meals just the two of us for at least 10 years now, and the most effort he's ever put into cooking is adding extra (special) ingredients to the pizza we order. Need to send him to some kind of gay finishing school?

BK he'd probably take you up on that too. But I prefer not to think too hard about what my brother gets up to in the bedroom.

Understandable. :)  Who said anything about the bedroom though.  I can still swing a whip in the kitchen.  He'll be a cookin' fool by the time I mail him back to you.

In that case, I'll get out the boxes and duct tape, and FedEx should have him with you sometime next week.

The most classic recipe can be found here:

http://www.campbellkitchen.com/recipedetail.aspx?recipeID=24099
(sorry, the link button is not working for me this minute)

and looks like this:

Classic Green Bean Casserole

1 can (10 3/4 ounces) Campbell's® Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup (Regular or 98% Fat Free)

1/2 cup milk

1 teaspoon soy sauce

Dash ground black pepper

4 cups cooked cut green beans

1 1/3 cups French's® French Fried Onions

1. Stir the soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, beans and 2/3 cup onions in a 1 1/2-quart casserole.
2. Bake at 350°F. for 25 minutes or until the bean mixture is hot and bubbling. remove from oven and stir the bean mixture.
3. Sprinkle with the remaining onions. Heat broiler and return casserole to heat, under broiler. Broil for 5 minutes or until the onions are golden brown.

RECIPE TIPS
Tip: Use 1 bag (16 to 20 ounces) frozen green beans, 2 packages (9 ounces each) frozen green beans, 2 cans (about 16 ounces each) green beans or about 1 1/2 pounds fresh green beans for this recipe.
For Broccoli Casserole, substitute 4 cups cooked broccoli flowerets for the green beans.
For cheese lovers, stir in 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese with soup. Omit the soy sauce. Sprinkle with an additional 1/4 cup Cheddar cheese when adding the remaining onions.
To add a festive touch, stir in 1/4 cup chopped red pepper with the soup.
To add crunch, add 1/4 cup toasted sliced almonds to the onion topping.
For bacon lovers, add 2 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled, to the bean mixture.
For Golden Green Bean Cassrole, substitute Campbell's® Condensed Golden Mushroom Soup for the Cream of Mushroom Soup. Omit the soy sauce. Stir in 1/4 cup chopped red pepper with the green beans.

Thankyou for the effort to type this, it looks interesting, I have the ingrediants and it is my birthday in a week so I will try it for my birthday dinner....

Their purpose is to add crunch to a recipe, in my opinion.  I would not say they add any substantial flavor.  There is a picture of the product here.

I would say a decent description is slivers of onion that have been battered and deep-fried.  Although they are probably actually minced/pulverized/reconstituted.
