Status: offline 		The Sopranos are back, and I for one am interested in talking about them. The first episode of the sixth season aired Sunday night, and HBO's plan is to churn out 20 more episodes before stopping.

Although its impossible to see what the final/closing story arc will be, I have one suspicion. Right now Tony is at the TOP. His relations with Carmela have stabilized. His rivals have been weakened. The FBI has shifted its focus to terrorism. He is awash in MONEY. His children are closer to maturity. The great symbol of this was how Tony actually tipped the scale when he got onto it --- he's fat, both literally and figuratively.

So, my take is what goes up --- must come down. I predict an unravelling of his family's material paradise. Through such an unravelling, we'll get to see the characters really confront themselves, their lives, and their values. In sum, the good times WON'T keep rolling. The audience will see the mobster lifestyle deromanticized. If this bears out, I'm keen to see how Carmela, Meadow, and AJ come out in the end. It will also be interesting to see who gets lucky and walks out of the water dry and unsoaked.

Status: offline 		I missed it....i have only been waiting TWO years for a new episode...who would have thought it would have come on at 6:00 PM PST. It later reaired at 9:00 PM but didn't know it till after the fact. Sooo disappointed.

Thanks champagnewishes. i've put this one on my calendar so i don't forget. Like you, i've waited also (in fact i was beginning to think it was just 'over'). Too bad it's on opposite of Desperate Housewives, here. Now i have to decide which one to watch , unless i can watch it every Saturday at 7 then it will work!! *rambling here* sorry

I think I may agree with you. David Chase chose to weigh the audience down in a torture zone of Tony's immediate family while the bizarro Tony ambled about as a lost, identityless, 45 yr old salesman --- working in the ARMS industry.

Are we supposed to think pimping weapons on the world market is just as bad as brandishing them in the RW?

Is the American 40yr old MIRED in a LOST ZONE?

Is Tony being set up for some sort of existential awakening when he rounds back into shape?

Will there be any entertainment value in finding the answers to these questions?

Status: offline 		Thanks for this thread! I love the Sopranos too! I also loved Rome but that's for another thread.
Carmela is my favorite character. I can only hope she survives the downward spiral. But in a sense the only direction she can go is up. She is living a life that makes her fearful all the time as she describes it. Her fulfillment comes from buying things. She needs to undergo her own crises and rise to the challenge. She has shown her strength in her willingness to leave Tony and stand up to his threats but let's see when ths shit really hits the fan.

Also liked that the story starts with Tony getting shot. Not the usual arc. Hope am not spoiling but happend last week!

I have to disagree with this. I was surprised that I enjoyed the second Sopranos episode after reading bad reviews and hearing from THOSE AROUND ME that the episode sucked. I didn't much enjoy the family scenes in the hospital, the misery and the infighting. But I really did like Tony's sequences...they hit the right note of disquieting and unreal and disconnected...kind of a Lost in Translation feel about those scenes. In a fairy tale the main character would be wandering through a forest, meeting strange characters. I like how the whole airport/hotel/business conference world is our equivalent of wandering lost through an alienating landscape.

So, better than expected, given low expectations.

Question--did Meadow ever figure out that Tony had her former fiance killed off?

Status: offline 		Good question--I don't think that's ever been revealed, but Ro and Carmela seem to have figured it out.  That funeral scene a couple of years ago, where Meadow walked out of the restaurant, was probably supposed to mean that she has made her peace with her father's life.

I caught a comment last night to the effect that Chris still thinks Tony was balling Adriana before he found out she was a snitch.  With all the evil shit that Tony has done, it seems almost pathetic that he's being blamed for something he didn't.

Well you have Anthony Soprano & bizarro Anthony.

Bizarro Anthony has Kevin Finnerty.

So the briefcase is twice removed from the actual hospital patient, but in truth the message is simple:

Your business (what you do) is my business (hence the theme of the monks and the transcendant law suit.) All business is "our" business.

Now, if only the rich guy's money could be my money, then I'd be walking in tall cotton.

One thing the episode cleared up is what a bunch of worthless, self centered idiots he'd be leaving behind. Another thing: there are clear advantages to being the second (not first) in command. The overall message looks somewhat trite, that immediate family is all you have in the end, and I would think that's a rather sad conclusion to reach for a broad lot of people out there.

Other notes:

Carmello and Dr. Melphi in the office scene struck me as nails on a chalk board. I just knew when she received that new Porche in the first episode that there was going to be a price to pay.

Now I wonder what is going on in Tony's mind --- being weak gives him the opportunity to see everyone for who they really are as his weakness emboldens them---- and I'm curious how he bounces back and reasserts himself.

If Silvio recovers, he will be stongly in Tony's Corner having walked a mile in his shoes, the length of which was long enough to send him, too, off to the Hospital.

I have to say i was miffed when Adriana was killed.  Christopher is a walking time bomb.  The fact that there was reference made that he still thinks Tony was slam dancing Adriana (or Adriana had been giving Tony a bj the night they had the accident) makes you have to wonder if the bomb isn't going to blow somewhere close to home.
