Maybe this is the real reason Lou Dobbs left CNN? Actually, this is nice to read after watching Dobbs bash Mexicans for illegal immigration for the last five years. This is an unexpected surprise.

Why Americans are heading south for work. Viva Mexico! - Forbes.com

As unemployment in the U.S. climbs past 10%, what does Mexico offer to Americans looking for work? For starters, Mexico offers a comprehensive health care plan for a flat fee of $250 per annum.

Yup.. Mexico can be a good place to work and/or retire. There are established enclaves of Americans living there and for decades, Americans have had the privlidge of having Uncle Sam mail their Social Security checks directly to them. Of course, one must get over the American hubris of refusing to learn another language. Costa Rica is another country that welcomes Americans and there is a boom on the pacific coast for housing.Huge investments in infrastructure and being made - and it's just gorgeous there. No standing army, low crime rate and minimal taxes. Mexico has the burden of the drug related crime and kidnappings so - beware.( btw - non- Mexicans are allowed to outright own property and make investments or start up companies in Mexico with less beaurocracy)

There are a lot of doctors planning a move to Costa Rica if Abomicare goes through, and there are employer plans being designed that will send patients to CR for major procedures in that event. But of course there are no unintended consequences from screwing with something you know precious little about.

Does that include travel & other costs,or is that an added bonus for the patient?

Leave out the future tense. This is already reality today; a number of US health insurance plans that only cover health insurance south of the border (albeit in Tijuana, not CR). For instance, Blue Cross has such a plan.

You can believe it or not but I knew this was going to happen. Perhaps better to say that I thought this would happen, but now I knew.

How long is it going to take for our best engineers to move to China ? Anyone's guess, and I am sure some have. I mean how long will it take to become prevalent enough to notice ? Notice my pondery here is when, not if. (may have just invented another word)

This is now a global economy, and we are poised to lose on all fronts. The reason is that we can't get anyone decent to represent us.

Expect more emmigration from the US in the future. To Mexico, Canada, and eventually Asia and Europe. After all why did the immigrants come here in the first place ? Now the current regime* is doing it's best to turn the tables, and other places will be recognized as lands of opportunity. What do you expect people to do ?

*By current regime I mean both sides of the aisle, democrats and rerpublicans. In my view, turning the US into a third world nation is the only real bipartisan effort.

My son will be working in Australia on the Gold Coast a lot in the next few months....apparently he is also purchasing a condo at a place called Airlie beach.

They also have a facility in Peru he spends a great deal of time in.

Apparently money goes A LOT further both places right now.

Wow. What nonsense.

Sure, Mexico is a great place to retire--when you already have money that will then stretch further in purchasing power.

Two problems with your scenario-- (1) those lower prices are also reflected in lower wages, and (2) after NAFTA, Mexico's economy is tied to the U.S. economy in ways far more severe than vice versa--and since the U.S. recession, Mexico's economy is a mess. I don't have time to go searching for articles right now, but here are a few quick 2009 ones:

Brain, this doesn't make sense. Even if you could find a job in Mexico or Cent. America how much is it going to pay, $40-$60 a week?
I read an article that said the "machiadora" factories along the border paid $25 per week with "management" making "double" that.
Even "professionals" don't fare much better in those countries.
It's only a "good deal" if you're *retired* and have a good income. They're not going to pay you more money just because you're "American."
Many Filipino military retirees go back to the Phillipines to retire and live like kings on their retired pay.
People may be going to those countries to retire yes but not to work.

Or taking advantage of countries that need change......

Orrrrrrr, enjoying countries that didn't need any change at all.

I don't think that's necessarily a contradiction. The lower prices don't have to be reflected in lower wages for Americans looking to work in Mexico - and in fact, they probably aren't. Rather, the lower prices are a reflection of the fact that Mexico has far more poor people than the USA (although this disparity is getting less as more Americans are sliding into poverty).

From my own, admittedly anecdotal, observation based on friends in Mexico City, Middle-class Mexicans (and thus middle-class Americans working in Mexico) would make similar wages to the USA.

It is true that the Mexican economy is a mess. But then, it's been a mess several times since the 1980s, if not earlier.

There is another big unknown here, and that is the future of the dollar. If, as some people fear, the dollar becomes near worthless, then the income for these retirees would all but dry up.

Im not sure about that, cadenas. Nurses in Mexico (in 2005) made 6,310 pesos a month. Less than 500 a month, unless my conversion is off. I would call them middle class in the US. Seems like in mexico they are blue collar.

"Rather, the lower prices are a reflection of the fact that Mexico has far more poor people than the USA (although this disparity is getting less as more Americans are sliding into poverty). "

If they can reduce everything for those people why not us ? The reason is they don't have to and enjoy the profit therefrom.

There have been people who have pushed for drug price reform, but they got shot down by the big money. Why are prescriptiobn drugs cheaper in other countries ? They have to be.

The way I see this is like the playing field getting more level. We were THE land of opportunity at one time. Things have changed. Big business will respond by being more fair, or lose a huge market. But they aren't going to do it until it is in their best interests to do so. This can only happen by further dessimation of our economy, which is simply a rollback of the availability of credit.

The general impact on our personal lives is pretty easy to figure out. How this works out in the big picture is a bit harder to predict. Like there has been talk of free trade on a grander scale, one which would almost effectively erase national borders. That is not going to happen soon, because right now borders are a money maker.

We will see change when they see it to be to their advantage, and not one second sooner. And that change is almost always not what we want or expect. The reason is that most of us can't see things objectively.

In other words, pissed at Bill Gates and Microshaft ? Well what the hell would YOU do in his position ? What would YOU do if this change resulted in you maing alot less money ? You would resist change with all your available resources, and so would I in most cases.

But then when conditions change, for them that is, we will see real change. That is a fact. I see it coming within a decade, and probably a bit sooner. Mark my words if you wish.
