Brain -> Our Defense Budget Pours Trillions - Yes, Trillions - Down A Hole. Maybe it's time to fix that? (12/4/2009 5:03:46 PM)

I think this is what they mean by a rhetorical question.

Our Defense Budget Pours Trillions - Yes, Trillions - Down A Hole. Maybe it's time to fix that?

-- The 2010 Pentagon budget means "every man, woman and child in the United States will spend more than $2,700 on (defense) programs and agencies next year," reports the Cato Institute. "By way of comparison, the average Japanese spends less than $330; the average German about $520; China's per capita spending is less than $100."

Because the portion of the budget that is being "poured down a hole" doesnt come close to trillions. Yes, there is waste, but it isnt the entire budget, which is the "trillions" and is a vast exaggeration of what TCI said.

Dont you ever read the links properly ?

In 2000, the Pentagon admitted it has lost -- yes, lost -- $2.3 trillion.

Short rant ahead - look away if you love the military:

FUCK THE DEFENSE BUDGET.

85% of the defence budget is spent on offence. The other 15% is erm paperclip supplies.

I know this for a fact.

People, people.
The numbers are not mysterious:
http://www.wallstats.com/deathandtaxes/

In this fiscal year, we spent around 900 Billion on Defense/ Homeland Security.
We collected about 2 Trillion in revenue. Meaning that nearly 1/2 of every dollar you send to Washington is spent on Defense.
This is not an opinion. This is a fact.

Whether it is worth it, is opinion.

Back to the flame war already in progress.

I'd rather have the money spent on defense instead of welfare..

tazzygirl -> RE: Our Defense Budget Pours Trillions - Yes, Trillions - Down A Hole. Maybe it's time to fix that? (12/4/2009 7:38:10 PM)

You would rather spend that money on war, and potentially the deaths of our servicemen, just so you can be righteous to your republican beliefs and not give aid to those who are your countrymen?

wow, says alot about you.

Come on Tazzy give the guy a break....he is simply following the most holy of Republican dogma.Even wasted defence dollars is money better spent than any public sector social expenditure...no matter how legitimate or effective. It was this thinking that created and made an urban legend of the welfare mother and her pink Cadillac.

Something was needed to divert attention from $600 toilet seats.

pahunkboy -> RE: Our Defense Budget Pours Trillions - Yes, Trillions - Down A Hole. Maybe it's time to fix that? (12/4/2009 7:56:50 PM)

any problem that is monetised will never be solved.

rather convenient....

Please. Half the posters were barely cognizant in 1985. 600 dollar toilet seats, 120 dollar hammers... and they want to complain about health care! what a joke!

This seems ludicrous to me. I can never work out why spending large sums on defence, from real or perceived enemies, is seen as being better than protecting people from illness.

Let's set aside some of that budget for healthcare as a preemptive strike against future conflicts, insuring that most of us are healthy enough to defend our country if the need arises. We'll declare war on malnourishment and disease (again, ensuring our population is healthy enough to defend ourselves), build a relief fund against future disasters (damn Katrina and those other hurricanes - I mean weather-based environmental terrorists), subsidize higher education (make an associates degree the minimum requirement to enlist, and pay tuition for students committed to join the armed forces).........couldn't these all be construed as D.o.D. expenses?
And if I had wheels, I'd be a bicycle.

Maybe he was teased by socialists as a kid... "No...! Please! Don't socialize my lunch box! It's my lunch box! That's my -- my puddin'! No, not my pudding! Wait, wait -- you're givin' in to -- to -- a black boy, and- and, a lesbian! My puddin', a black boy, lesbian, my puddin', NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" (wakes up in a sweat... it was just a dream... just a dream... just a dream...)

What are you talking about? Why do we have to justify spending in terms of war? We don't, and shouldn't.
