Quite simply, what is philosophy, and what is it's purpose ?

chiaThePet -> RE: Philosophy ? (12/5/2009 1:53:20 AM)

It is the accumulated wisdom and understanding which finds it's purpose in such matters as existence,
knowledge, reason, and the fucking awesome ability to be able to dismiss those insanely high scale
billings from your psychiatrist in a court of law by pleading insanity.

Jez Chia - and here was i thinking philosophy was some peoples way of spending time after the human race figured out how to grow stuff, and didn't need to spend all their time hunting.

Just goes to show you - you can't always be right. *sigh* *wanders off to think about existance, knowledge and reason*

I do what I can.

Goes off to ponder questions of the universe

Did Adam and Eve have navels?

Did you ever notice when you blow in a dog's face he gets mad at you?

But when you take him in a car, he sticks his head out the window!

Do one legged ducks swim in circles?

Do atheists get insurance for acts of God?

Do vegetarians eat animal crackers?

Does anybody ever vanish with a trace?

How come Superman could stop bullets with his chest, but always ducked when someone threw a gun at him?

How come you press harder on a remote control when you know the battery is dead?

How does a shelf salesman keep his store from looking empty?

I shall have to consider the question in some depth and get back to you in a couple of years

It's a means of trying to understand the world and how it works, suitable for people whose math is too weak for physics, which does the same thing.

kdsub -> RE: Philosophy ? (12/6/2009 6:55:45 AM)

Philosophy sounds like an important word that people should pay attention to when in reality it is mostly fanatic babble of self-important charlatans.

It is simply a thought that a group of weak people can be convinced is important and worth an action.

You're setting yourself up for snarky comments about those who suck at sentence composition...

Hmm. I'm guessing that if everyone were meant to be good at math, we'd all be walking calculators. Me, I'm a philosopher. I ponder the questions about the universe and existence, without depending on any particular crutch, though I'll lean on any of them momentarily, until I get my bearings -- In the end, though, it seems to me that all I really need to philosophize are a willingness to explore ideas and enough creativity to extrapolate on their applications for attempting to understand the incomprehensible. *shrugs*

Look at it this way : it literally means "love of knowledge" philos =love, sophia= knowledge

the root word philos is also found in the compound words "necrophilia" which means "to love the dead" and audiophile "one who loves sound"

Sorry if this was already mentioned. I didn't read the entire thread.

Aneirin -> RE: Philosophy ? (12/6/2009 10:44:01 AM)

I asked this because I have been asked at college to provide a personal philosophy for where my interests lie and what it is that I do, they won't accept I do what I do because I want to, that simply does not have enough information for an inquirer, to which my answer is, if they like something I create, then they can buy it if they wish. But what does it mean they ask, my reply is, it means anything to anyone and everything to others, they buy it, they can assign their own meaning , Something I have found, people who view and purchase art are more comfortable if they have a meaning from a creator, they do not like to put their own meaning on things,as if they are not worthy or comfortable with their own thoughts, hmm, perhaps that is the difference between an artist and an art buyer, I wonder.

But for my successful completion of my BA in Applied Arts, I have it seems got to come up with some meaningless psycho babble, a philosophy for my art. So, me being me, I had to look into what philosophy actually is, and what it's purpose is, and research on the net, was pretty inconclusive, it held too many explanations, which comes across to me, as people who really wish to psycho analyse people from what they say or do. If that is the truth, petty attempts at amateur psycho analyis of a creator, I could have fun with this, fun in leading a viewer down the garden path, cause them to believe something that is not true, and cause the joke to be on them. But, can I be that cynical with people, but I suppose the knowlege of psycho analysis can have it's advantages.

My hesitation to assign myself a philosophy, is my attempt to not contain myself in a box for I see categorisation as too limiting, something which can come back to bite one in the ass at a later date.

DesFIP -> RE: Philosophy ? (12/6/2009 10:53:44 AM)

Not meaningless psychobabble. Something drives you to make it. There are a lot easier jobs out there that don't involve digging up buried chains, cleaning them, reusing them. But you do this, why? What calls to you about the things you do?

Is it the connection with the sea, with the history and romance as viewed through the passage of centuries from when the chains were forged? Do you imagine the people who worked on them so many years ago? Children blowing the bellows while their fathers forged at the anvil? Or what.

The answer to those questions is your personal philosophy.

Hierodule -> RE: Philosophy ? (12/6/2009 10:58:54 AM)

Are you in art school? If so try to make "I have no personal philosophy" your personal philosophy start with this:

"My hesitation to assign myself a philosophy, is my attempt to not contain myself in a box for I see categorisation as too limiting, something which can come back to bite one in the ass at a later date." (maybe reword it a tad)

Point out how a rigid personal philosophy is not beneficial to you art. Come up with examples where your personal beliefs about your art, and its purpose, have evolved drastically.  Then at the end say something like "My philosophy is no philosophy". You could use the  literal definition of the word to illustrate that "philosophy" literally "love of knowledge" has nothing to do with art.

If this is your typical art school they will prob eat that shit up. ;-)

...and so you've answered your own question.

Your personal philosophy is to not contain yourself in a box, for you see categorisation as too limiting, something which can come back to bite one in the ass at a later date.

See? easy.

ETA, and what Hierodule said. Sorry, we cross-posted.....lol

Aneirin -> RE: Philosophy ? (12/6/2009 11:18:21 AM)

Yeah, there is that side of my art, that is a current source of wonder, I am still trying to work out, an attraction to iron seems to be the over riding pull. I have even considered the metaphysical hocus pocus ideas, that of my astrological sun sign and it's designated metal, yeah, it is iron, but am wondering, just how much the past science of astrology bears on the present day realities of modern science, is it a worthy consideration, or is it just hocus pocus, I leave that wonder to develop or not, on it's own.

My other overwhelming interest, is ethnic metalworking, the sort that is practised with the minimum of tools and far from ideal conditions, the likes or the rural craftsman in modern civilisation deprived areas of the world, the type of art produced before modern industry. I suppose a post apocalyptic view of doing things, or definately pre centralised industry, perhaps I wish to escape the trappings and methods of the contained modern world, a world I perhaps believe is doomed to failure and a reversal to the thousands of years of rural industry that existed before the modern already  failing system. I seek out and view ethnic artists in their enviroment and wonder at their creations, created with the basic tools and advanced skills, in particular, an interest in Pashtun metalwork, of the Kuchi people of Afghanistan and Pakistan, an area through a war concerning the west, has awakened my interest to the beauty of the people who live there.

I am also investigating medieval Islam inspired metal techniques and bringing them into the west through my art work, such things as damas iron work, the Indian koftgari and niello metalwork, all things which I know my professors at college know nothing of, perhaps I do it because they cannot limit me through superior knowledge, so I am free to experiment without the constant negative critique, honestly, they do more to kill interest than propogate it. They are already baulking on my desire to create historically and ethnically correct Killij belly dance swords for a dance I love and do, the negative critique, is curved swords are illegal in the UK, and my answer one has to define a sword before it is banned. But hey, for an art college, not being able to challenge political and questionable issues, that is not a free enviroment.

Maybe my philosophy is I am just a rebel, a person with anger towards a modern world of lies and manipulation, who seeks to right the wrongs of a manipulated history.
