How many people do you know who makes a joke at other peoples religion and culture now and then? They make others people laugh and get paid for it. All of a sudden, you hear a joke about your own personal religion and culture. Rather than laugh, you get offended and leave. If you can't take a few cracks at your own religion, then you shouldn't have been doing it in the first place upon others. Any how, Isaac Hayes will no longer be playing Chef on the show South Park.

Yep, I heard about it yesterday. He's a scientologist, and South Park is doing or did an episode targeting scientology.

......walks away humming "Chocolate Salty Balls"

I probably shouldn't answer this since Fangs thinks I am too serious! *Wink*
But I don't make jokes like that. There are too many ways to be humerous, IMO, without getting into the cultural or religious areas. And maybe if this sort of thing thing stopped, was considered unacceptable, society, as a whole, wouldn't still be hanging onto bigotry. I don't chastize anyone for doing it. But I honestly seldom find it funny. And sometimes the simple lack of response is enough to cause the speaker to give it a second think.
Why is telling a joke not hate speech, but standing on a soap box is? There is always a grain of honesty behind the punchline. And if one does not believe it in the first place, one wouldn't find it funny in the first place.

By the way, I couldn't find the article. I think, perhaps, the link has moved on. So is this a tit for tat thing? You can dish it out but you can't take it? If so, I absolutely agree with your premise. I am asking a serious question here, because I can't see the article, I don't know the celebrity in question, and I don't watch South Park.
OMG, how boring am I! *laffs*

The episode has aired.
The writers (creators) will be on Letterman tonight.

Great thread Fangs!!

When I read the article regarding him quitting South Park I merely shook my head in disappointment with him. South Park has poked fun at everyone and everything and anything they have left out... they will get to soon enough. Hayes has a lot of gall to be able to participate in a show that attacks other religions and when they get around to his he takes offense and quits. I believe the word for that is a hypocrite. What is good for the goose is good for the gander and all he has done is discredit himself in my eyes (I am sure he will lose sleep over that too). If you are going to poke fun at someone else's beliefs then prepare to have it returned in kind. Either take your stand when it begins or don't bitch when it hits home. I am really getting tired of thin skinned people and those that are hypocritical.

Frankly I don't see much difference between them. As I've said before, I strongly support free speech and one of the big reasons is I like to know who is bigoted and hateful.

If they are silenced, we don't get to know until they do something. (Krystalnach again?) I prefer to let them speak and joke so they show their true colours.

Doesn't he realize that the entire Chef character was quite the stereotype???

Wonder what they would have thought if they parodied his early music - "I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft...

*nods* Point well taken, John.

The beauty about South Park (and there really is some!) is that most of the fun-poking they do has lessons behind it. For example, in a recent episode, one of the regular character's on the show is named Mr. Garrison and he's openly gay. He has a sex-change operation and becomes "a woman", and begins prancing around, joyfully crowing about how he was always a woman trapped inside a man's body, and it's all good.

Kyle, a short white kid, is star basketball player at his predominantly white school. He auditions for a county-wide team where all the other players are tall black kids. They play circles around him. Dejectedly, he realizes the he'll never make the cut....but he FEELS like a basketball player....he concludes he's a tall black kid trapped in a short white kid's body. He has a "Negro-otomy" to change his body into that of a tall black kid. As the plastic surgeon said, "Like Michael Jackson's Caucasian-otomy, only in reverse". (Not sure if those are the exact words, but they're close)

Cut to Kyle's father, who is horrified at what his son has "become".....but then has a revelation that he's always wanted to be a dolphin. Kyle's surgeon is only happy to assure him that he's a dolphin trapped in a man's body, and he transforms Kyle's dad into a hideous humanoid form of a dolphin....or dolphinoid form of a human, whichever way you want to look at it. Ane he cackles all the way to the bank.

Of course, disastrous results all around....except for Mr., uh, Mrs. Garrison, who is still happy to be female-appearing.

The lesson? Learn to be happy with, and accept yourself for who you are. Also, it's a potshot toward unscrupulous plastic surgeons who will perform any operation if the price is right.

And yes, I agree that Isaac Hayes is a hypocrite. It only took him eight years worth of royalties to have his epiphany.

I just had my own epiphany after making the last post. Could be that the character of "Chef" has just run it's course on the show, they needed an interesting way to get rid of the character, and the whole thing is just a publicity stunt. All parties involved, Hayes, the producers of South Park and the Church of Scientology ALL get free publicity, and it's a win-win-win situation............

Any of you who do follow the show remember how they tried to permanently kill off Kenny (those bastards!) because they didn't know what to do with his character anymore, and replace him with Butters. But he still came back, muffled commentary and all.

Gotta run, Volume 1 of Family Guy arrived today!

Hayes is patheic for doing that. He had no problem making fun of race & other peoples religions. One of the cool things about South Park is that everyone gets made fun of.

Because jokes are funny, even when they poke your own church in the eye.

Because the reason for telling a joke and laughing at it can be that it's funny, not that the teller and the laugher hate whatever is the butt of the joke.

I mean, think about it -- do you hate the butt of every joke or piece of humor? You may even love what's being made fun of.

Sure, there are some things we all consider so sacred that we don't like jokes about them. For me, that would be God and a few things close to Him. Specific victims would be another. Probably several other things.

For a Scientologist, maybe one of those few things is Scientology. Seems crazy that someone sensitive over Scientology would be on a show that blasts away at everything. I guess he either knew it was coming eventually or he had a sudden epiphany -- or maybe

I meant to finish by saying "or maybe some fellow Scientologists talked to him."

Since South Park is on the list of programs which I have banned from airing in My home when I am present, ir issue is moot. However to the crux of the situation.. If you choose to maje jokes or taking shots at people's beliefs etc, you best be prepared to deal with reciprocole jokes and shots. You can just duck or you can make it a huge joke as well.. OR you can quit.. The choice is yours!

In charmed, an episode on all the time from 5 to 6, they killed prue halleywell off in the movie because off scene the real pepople doing the charachters started having massive problems and ended up hating each other, so prue dies, and then later in comes paig, a half sister. The sisters mom had had an affair with her whitelighter and the result was paig who was put up for adoption because relationships between white lighters and their charges* paiges mom* were forbidden.

Katy,
*Hug* We will be okay. I think The Steelers have a good chance to repeat this year. I am looking forward to the draft.
