When the adrenalin is surging because your family is in danger, the only thing you can think of is to eliminate the danger. Orion is not a mind reader...he had no clue what was going to happen, so he stopped it before it happened. He did not shoot the intruder in the back, but gave him adequate warning and took appropriate action when the warnings were ignored.

As to the intruder not deserving to be shot? Please. He put himself in that position and took a risk. He gets absolutely no sympathy from me.

I'm heading out to the range on Saturday to blast some serious rounds just because I can. Holly is right. Sympathy? You gotta be kidding me. I don't give a fuck what happened in his childhood or what his life circumstances are, I truly don't. So many of us have been through financially grueling times the past two years in this economy and I will be goddamned if some piece of shit is going to steal from me and mine what he busted our asses to earn. This makes me so angry. Yes it's just stuff. Stuff that we work 7 days a week for, stuff that is purchased by the blood and sweat of men (and women) that work construction 12 months a fucking year outside in the winter in Maine, stuff that is paid for and we own. So even defending family aside, I would shoot to kill for stuff alone and not make one goddamned apology for it. If you criticizers want to turn your home into a free for all take what you want help the needy house, rock on. I don't. [>:].

Kirata -> RE: Defended my home (12/8/2009 10:13:14 AM)

~ FR ~

The bottom line in a situation like this is what's best for you and yours. To expose yourself un-necessarily and get tapped will only result in you being dead and your home and your loved ones left unprotected.

I'm not suggesting that it would be better to hide and let them steal you blind, though that's your choice. It wouldn't be mine. But if the noise was, say, in the hallway that my door opened onto, I wouldn't be sticking my head out right away to see what it was, armed or not. Nobody has suggested such a thing, of course, but all the same I think caution deserves at least some passing mention here.

If you forget, in that rush of adrenalin, that your first priority is for your family (and secondly, you) to survive, it is all too easy to find yourself in deep shit. I've seen the lands and grooves in the barrel of a 9mm up close from the wrong end, and I can tell you that all kinds of crazy things will run through your mind when you feel your life threatened. Fortunately for all concerned, I just said, "How can I help you?"

That's not a comparable situation, of course, but I think the point is clear. Fuck up, and yours can become a comparable situation fast. I'm sure most of you realize this, and I don't mean to belabor the obvious. But there may be people reading this thread who will form ideas from it, and I would hope for caution to be prominent among them.

As a society, I strongly believe we need to have sympathy for, and help, those who are forced into a life of crime.

As an individual, I, just like Orion, aim center of mass with the goal of dropping the motherfucker.

Orion, sleep well knowing that you did right by your family.

I am of the opinion that no matter how hard you worked to earn your stuff, your stuff is not more valuable than human life. I don't feel sorry for the intruder who gets shot. And I don't feel sorry for the homeowner who goes to jail for killing someone over their stuff. It's pretty damn easy to feel that your life is threatened when you've got a stranger with felonious intent in your home. I don't understand why people can't be satisfied with the defense of their lives and the lives of others... why they've got to go all bloodthirsty over personal property.

Here! Here!
I was stationed in Maine for ten years in the U.S. Coast Guard and I can tell you that the people up there are a hardy and independant lot.

DaddyArms -> RE: Defended my home (12/8/2009 12:20:44 PM)

This story is a complete fabrication. You posted this fantasy at  6:18am on 12/6/2009. Your story states you were awoke at approximately 3:45 am. You go on to say that you had been "...sitting here for an hour...".  So from 3:45 to 5:18 which is roughly an hour and a half is the time it took to investigate this crime?

*****I apologize, as it was so graciously pointed out to me, the time for this investigation would have taken approximately 4 and one half hours to investigate. I still think this story is B.S. and will continue to do so until proven otherwise, despite the avatar by my handle.

Your time-line does not add up. This story is bunk.

A post popped up in that little 'as the collar turns' banner annoyed that a "bs poster has resurfaced". Amazingly, I see you posting!

Coincidence? I think not!

Let's see...you damn near killed a kid who was going through your stuff...well done, you want a medal for nearly killing somebody over basically nothing? Why didn't you call 911 before you decided to go play Rambo? you know, call the cops and wait for them to arrive, you could have got your gun ready etc. and stayed right where you were, but no you decided to go hunting. I can never understand the reasoning that dictates that your junk is worth more than a human life. Sorry, but I see nothing in your story that in any way changes my point of view on guns, in fact it just reinforces my position.

DemandingLeader -> RE: Defended my home (12/8/2009 1:10:27 PM)

I have no problem with people using a gun to protect themselves while they hold up in a room waiting for the cops. I have no problem with using that gun in a defensive posture.

But when you are sweeping the house, you are not defensive, you are "on the hunt", you are acting offensively against an intruder that may or may not be carrying tools capable of taking your life.  Somehow, we have come to justify the near taking of a life, or the taking of a life, over the fact that somebody has intruded upon your property.

In your case you were lucky, in that the guy was found to be armed (helps to justify your shooting), and that he lived afterwards. But coming on here and using your story to give the finger to the anti-gun crowd, you are emboldening others who may not see the same fortunate outcomes in a similar event (where the intruder may not live, or the intruder may not have had a gun to begin with), and that potentially lands them in a totally different legal jackpot. And thats what bothers me about this post.

I am glad you were able to defend your home.  But your experience is not cannon fodder for your cause.

Well fuck, we can't have any of that going on. The economy is bad enough as it is. That kind of shit could ruin the home invasion and burglary business altogether.

Like the organization called the "Pink Pistols". Liberals who believe in teaching and using firearms for protection.
