I'm one of those liberal democrats that people don't understand.  I'm pro-choice, believe in gay marriage, etc. etc. etc.  But one thing that I'm with the conservatives 100% is that "Gun Control" is being able to hit your target

Actually, you sound more like someone who does not want government intruding and making restrictive laws.  In other words, a Libertarian.

So far as I know, that is largely an urban myth. Generally, gangs shoot for a reason, either revenge or business.

Snopes.com has a good catalogue of gang initiation rumors.

http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-q=gang+initiation&sp-a=00062d45-sp00000000&sp-advanced=1&sp-p=all&sp-w-control=1&sp-w=alike&sp-date-range=-1&sp-x=any&sp-c=100&sp-m=1&sp-s=0

Snopes is great. However, in this case, at least in the Chicago area...yeah...they are real. What is not real and is an urban legend is the emails that get sent around that a gang will be targeting a specific location on a specific date. Usually it is a Wal-Mart. Those are all fake. The rest is all too real. You have to be careful what you take from there and expand beyond the specifics on the web site.

Be well....

Not really.  There are plenty of things that I think the government should interfere with but there's no way I'm going into them here.
And there are some aspects to gun control that I think are wise.  For example, it's not the worst idea to make someone wait a couple of weeks if they want to purchase a gun, though I believe exceptions should be made for people who are in immediate danger, such as men and women who can provide proof that they've been granted a restraining order.  Gun safety courses are generally wise and should be taught in the public school system (they are in many in my own state actually).  Perhaps automatic weapons shouldn't be sold in Wal-Marts.  Etc. Etc. Etc.

I am not reading this whole thread right now. I will join the chorus of "Orion is the Man of the day" a bit, and I think it's a good thing that you got out of this.

But we are Men and Men kill. We can handle it if it becomes necessary. However if you have Women and kids in the house, the sound is of a gunshot in the house is probably a very profound thing to them.

In other words they are probably in more emotional distress than you. I would pay attention to that. They're probably scared to death right now, and guess who gets to deal with that !

It's natural to lose some sleep when shit like this happens. Enjoy the company of your loved ones, they need it and you earned it. Everyone will be OK, except maybe the punk who thinks he can just walk into someone's house and take what he wants.

Just be cool and show people what it means to be a Man. I have had to kill, but never in my own house. You have my respect. Really, you were probably scared shitless whether you care to reveal it or not. But you acted in a rational manner despite the conditions.

Gun ownership did not get you that respect, nor did your marksmanship. The fact that you thought rationally during the episode is what basically "separates the Men from the boys".

Kudos on your actions, and let's hope the punk has a long and painful recovery.

Edited to add, bravery is not being fearless, it is conquering the fear.

Its odd that this hasn't shown up in the Georgia news yet.

Usually this sort of thing does.

What are you implying with the above statement?

Musicmystery -> RE: Defended my home (12/7/2009 7:28:13 AM)

He's just not fond of Orion.

And he can't find major news organizations coverage of major stories, as we've seen before, when it doesn't suit his purpose.

Let it go.

Sanity -> RE: Defended my home (12/7/2009 7:36:00 AM)

No, read what I posted again. I wrote Georgia news. It doesn't show up in any of the web searches, any Georgia TV news or newspaper websites... its as if it never happened.

Must be a liberal conspiracy against the gun rights lobby, is all I can figure. They don't want people to know that guns in the hands of well trained individuals can keep homeowners safe.

What else could it be?

Oh I don't know. The fact that it's a weekend and he's not given interviews. At the moment, it's nothing more than a police blotter blurb. Not much of a story until they can find someone to talk on camera.

Musicmystery -> RE: Defended my home (12/7/2009 7:41:59 AM)

And even a quick Google search lists 7 million articles about Georgia shot intruder.

Take it to the bias thread, Sanity. And learn to use the Internet.

Orion,

He was carrying, he was IN YOUR HOUSE. He knew the job description. I feel for your aftermath, but not at all for the punk.

It could as easily be a neo-con conspiracy against home ownership.

Jeez, Sanity......

Sanity -> RE: Defended my home (12/7/2009 7:47:33 AM)

Sure, there was one back in October, one in August....

Maybe Loki's right, they don't like their news fresh  in Georgia. They like to wait several months before reporting their "news".

Maybe if we check back next summer we can read all about it.

Think what you like. I'm not posting links to a story about anyone here for public consumption.

You really are an incredible asshole.

Interesting that when you use the search option for 'news' in the same quick google search - there is 18 - only one in December. Only six if you use it exactly as ' Georgia shot intruder' in the google news search.

Apparently the problem some people have with with knowledge and learning is they stop when they get the answer you want; a function of needing confirmation not knowledge. However, if you keep going, concerned more with THE answer instead of one you want to hear, you my no longer be concerned, or use, a biased source; you'll use facts to form an opinion.

It is curious, that unless this was in some remote area not served by any local news paper without an internet version, that there is nothing reported. Which would seem in contradiction with the cops showing up in 3 minutes, or 20 minutes for that matter.

I would thing that Orion wouldn't post this only to advance a position on gun control; however I would think this would be 'news-worthy'; no matter what the agenda of the local news reporting sources. However, maybe they were all in Copenhagen covering the modern day version of the 'Council of Nicaea'.

Musicmystery -> RE: Defended my home (12/7/2009 8:11:48 AM)

Google News has fouled up people before here--it does not search the Internet. It searches content previously submitted (by site). Same with Google Blogs, etc. Not submitted, not searched. In the case of local news, this is common.

It's also why people searching Google News missed several NPR, Times, and network news stories. You go to the actual news sources if you want the actual data on the news. People are used to seeing the world through a filter, unaware that the filter is there. Google also relies heavily on links to a link. Until it's popular, it ain't Google.

Still belongs on the bias thread, off topic here.

But the claim that the media suppresses "man shoots intruder" stories is nonsense, as even a casual search quickly shows. And in this case, the homeowner isn't talking to the press, and the police are supporting that. Perhaps Orion and the Georgia police have a liberal bias. Geez.

I have to work. Over to whomever wants to argue about this.
