I like spiders. They are useful, beautiful, clever creatures that weave rainbows and trap and eat the bad bugs. I just don't want 'em crawlin' on me, is all.

The kidlet's fourth grade teacher didn't give gold stars, he gave out plastic ants and spiders. Five ants equalled one spider and I forget how many spiders you had to have to get a rubber snake. He looks up one day and I'm whacking ants of the counter with a dictionary and they aren't squishing but I'm screaming. Finally gets through to me that they're his and I go off muttering about damned teacher.

Couple days later they're in the washing machine and I'm yelling for him to take his ants and spider out before I vacuum them. They wound up in an empty jar which is probably still around here and I will never open.

i swear to you, i either have a cordless vac or a can of Raid within reach at all times. I never go into the basement unless i am armed with one or the other...both if it is after a hard rain. I am what you would call spider phobic.

Wasn't there a terror movie (years before "reality" shows) that had a clear plastic hat-box shaped chamber that was placed around the victim's neck? The victim was made to say what they hated most and "Lo and Behold" said hat box was filled with the victim's worst fear. Spiders, rats, .... I think there was water for drowning....bees, ants, snakes all come to mind.....
