You know how hard it is for me to decide what to wear today? (Hmm maybe I should post as EmeraldSlave2 today)

I find this American tradition hysterical because Irish really don't eat corned beef very often, and they have soda bread every day. They tend to eat far more British cuisine (but don't tell them that).

Of course the year I lived in Ireland they cancelled ALL the parades and events due to the foot & mouth disease outbreak. But it's still a national holiday so instead of everyone going out to the pubs on Thur, Fri and Sat night, they go out on Thur, Fri, Sat AND Sun night.

Happy St. Pattys day to all as well.

Historically, St. Patrick's Day in Ireland was a time of dancing, drinking and feasting (to break the Lenten prohibition against eating meat). But, the feast was typically Irish bacon and cabbage!

Our beloved tradition of eating corned beef probably began in the late 19th century with Irish immigrants to Canada and America. Beef and salt were less expensive, so brined or pickled beef was more accessible.

Happy "Wearing of the Orange Day", everyone!!!

beth's roots are from the orange side of the issue. As a 'recovering Catholic', and since there are rumors that St. Pat was Italian, I'm more GREEN than her!

We're heading the Hennessey's in Redondo for the day's festivities. If you are in the neighborhood come and say hello! Remember this is the day for "Erin to go bra-less"; or something that sounds like that.

Hey, Oumae, do you do that Irish step-dancing stuff? You have the gams for it.

Over here we have a Guinness commercial about it--not sure whether they show the same Guinness commercials in the homeland.

For those with kids in a parade it starts the night before putting rags in the hair to create ringlets lol.

Its a Holiday here so means a lie on, up and out to Mass if that way inclined then off to watch a parade then some go to the pub and others home for dinner. LA is correct, tho' we do eat corned beef here it would be more likely to have bacon and cabbage or Irish stew or my kids favourite which is Dublin Coddle. In Dublin in the evening there is a Ceile mor which is a big Irish dancing night, plenty of jigs and reels and craic (please note spelling, it means fun) galore.

It is celebrated both sides of the boarder so while wearing green is most common gold is great too. Most just wear a bit of shamrock but some really like to go to town.

Some say Patrick was Italian, some say French but he was a man so please... not Patty too girly, Paddy will do fine!
