Dont i wish... lol

Many of us have that financial dream. Master and i often wonder what we would do, how to spend... lol... the usual fantasy!

The current powerball lottery is 77 million... lump sum is around 38 million. My questions...

What would you do?

How would you spend it?

Who would you tell?

Who would you NOT tell?

For our financial wizards on the boards....How would you invest it? How would you protect it? Do you manage it youself, hire someone else? How do you trust someone with that much of your money?

What would the interest be if all you did with it was savings accounts? How could you have that many savings accounts? lol

And, the ultimate question....

Would your current relationships change because of the windfall... how so?

Have fun with this!!!!

Be careful with this!

When I was married, my then-wife and I discussed what we would do with that much money.  On paper, we went on vacations, invited along friends and family, and ended up broke!

I mentioned that to a friend, who told me that he and his wife did the same exercise and had their biggest fight ever, because one spouse thought their in-laws were getting too much largesse relative to their own family.

Bitch! I was getting all excited.....on behalf of you and Master Dinardin of course.

I honestly can't say what I would do, aside from telling my bosses to fuck off of course.  Chances are I would put it in the bank to gather interest til then.

Tazzy, firstly if you ever do, the first rule is to *keep your mouth shut* about it. Otherwise you'll have every scam man/ con artist/ salesman calling, e-mailing, and knocking on your door! Oh, and deadbeat brother-in-laws and relativies you haven't seen for 20 years!

I have the fantasy of winning the estimated $250M lottery, I would send you all postcards from the personal island I own in my mind, some of you motherfuckers will get them postage due.........

But soft, what light from yonder window breaks?

How would you go into the store and get toilet paper?
Give me the whole fuckin' row......I never want to worry about it again......

All the people I couldn't stand in high school would be begging me for money as well as my ne'er do well relatives.........

There is a bunch of people I could see hiring guys out to engage in 'earnest' conversation.........

Then you got the problem if you buy 5 quick picks you get your money and say why in the hell did I waste that 4 bucks for?

Who do I gotta kill tonight? Who is gonna kidnap my kids?

Just like they say in the beer commercials, "It don't get any better than this..........."

I would start a business. I would go around to engineering schools and get them while they still have some ideas. Come up with a product that would sell, hopefully world wide. I would short sell it or sell it for cost for a short time to establish a market, then with a bit of a markup, actually make money. Once the facility is built or procured as soon as the first dollar came in I would be looking for new ideas.

I would not move. I would not buy a new car. I would buy an old car and I got just the right one in mind. I would pay people to get my old video equipment working and I would get yet another video capture card and put stuff up that would blow your mind. I have stuff so old that a betamax used to cost more than but a few could afford. Maybe call it oldtv.com or something like that, ala youtube. Copyrights ? Just pay them off.

I would still go to work. There's no reason for my fortune to cause the misfortune of another, but things would be a bit different.

I might buy a couple of houses or buildings, maybe a strip mall or two, but I would not move, just rent it all out. Family and chosen family would have everything paid off, one time. Here's your chance, don't blow it.

I would not give to organized charity, I would probably start my own. And I would start with my own. People in this town, one of the poorest towns in one of the poorest states in the union. Charity would not eat up alot of the principle though. I think it better to creatre jobs, even if I can manage to break even in manufacturing, that would be fine. Mainly it would not be a handout, it would be a hand up. What's more, with an economic advantage I might get this country back on the map. I can easily sell at cost, maybe even slightly below.

And first and foremost, there would be no stock. The company would be an incorporated sole proprietorship. I will have no stockholders nor anyone to whom to answer. These jobs are NEVER going overseas, and my will, and also my "will" will prevent that for eternity.

At the end of it all of course I would keep enough to secure my own future. It all depends on just how much money there is.

And I would never consider myself rich. There would still be people with old money who could buy and sell me with pocket change. I would stay away from them for the most part.

Would I punish my enemies ? Hell yes. I just don't have any right now.

T

I have no clue what I'd do.  Honestly.

I suppose me and my husband could pay off everything, live modestly (yet without depriving ourselves of the little dreams we've had in life) and leave the rest for my daughter after we're gone.  Or hire someone to keep the money growing and live within the means of what I can make.

As far as who I'd tell, I have no family living (but one sister that I haven't seen since my oldest sister died).  My husband has family (siblings and cousins...but no mom, dad or grandparents) and yea, we'd probably feel their greedy need.  I'd leave that up to him cuz he'd know how to handle them.

It would probably improve my relationship with my husband since we argue, usually, over the lack of money.

Invest the bulk of it and give myself a triple raise. Live off the interest.  Start and structure a foundation that can operate in near perpetuity. The goal of the foundation would be to teach people how to fish vs giving them fish.
After the above is completed, travel, travel, travel!!!!

I told my (nearly wealthy) brother I would multiply my income by three and he said "So little"? I said if you can't be satisfied with tripling your income, when would you be satisfied??

Well it's true! Who in their right mind would want to be "famous?" Many people have to be "famous" to get "rich" but in hitting the lottery they're just handing you the "rich" part without the inconvenience of "fame."
Besides the obvious of having a bunch of nice cars and houses, (I'm a car guy) I'd try to blend in as much as I could. "Oh I made a few bucks in the stock market."
A summer home on the shore of Sebago Lake in Maine and a nice boat. "An uncle left me a few bucks when he passed on."
I wouldn't change the way I dress much either, cargo shorts and golf tees in warm weather, jeans and Irish sweaters in cold weather.
I would tip better than my normal 20% though.
As for putting your money in the bank, why bother? You want that money to "work" for you!
I own a stock now that's paying about 9.40% and Cramer on "Mad Money" loves it, thinks it will "double" (WIN) Windstar communications. It's right around $11 per share now and if it "doubles" from the $10 it was when he recommended it it'll still be paying 5%! Try and get that in a bank! What are they paying now, 1%? If you bought ten million dollars worth of that stock you'd be making about $950k per year in dividend payments.
If I hit the lottery I'd buy a lot more of that stock.
Now, there are a few people who I'd tell about my good fortune, *some* family who I know I could trust to keep their mouths shut after a nice check.
And Navy and Coast Guard buddies who I'd help out too. Plus some charities that I give to now and, I'd help out some people "anonymously."
I'd have a few nice houses but not those big "mansions" that those Hollywood people live in. Maybe spend the winters in Hawii.
The thing is that you want to remain "low key" and not draw attention to yourself. If lowlifes and criminals hear that "there's a lottery winner in that house" you're just inviting trouble! Naturally you'd probably want to move to an area where nobody knows you.
And you certainly wouldn't want to tell any "new" girlfriends/boyfriends of your good fortune for the forseeable future.
This is one of those things that the *less* people know the better!

I would not tell anyone. Not one person, family or friend. I would put it in savings and live on the interest. Now and then I would pull some out to buy a car, or take a trip. As far as anyone would know I was financing my car, or saving for my trip. I would create savings accounts for my family on their birthday I would give them control. One at a time, that way they would think I saved it for each of them in turn.

All my bills would be paid... and just because I don't like it when collection type people call for one of my family, I would silently pay those off without telling a soul. My family would assume that either creditors gave up, or that someone put them on the wrong trail.

My lifestyle would not have major changes as I am pretty content now.. but.. I would build a house on a 10 acre lot, in my design (with help of course), and furnish it to my satisfaction. Periodically, just as I do here on a smaller scale, I would give all my used items to the salvation army, and start fresh. I would stay there for parties, or when I just needed some time alone.

And when I write out my will.. I would put this money in trust for my offspring, to remain in savings so that they could draw from interest and make their life a little easier.

~*AMEN*~ to this, every word. Add in some farm animals and a slave boy or two, and a winter home in Cocoa Beach FL, and we have a deal.
No seriously, there was a young man in My town who won the lottery back in about August or so, 88 million (the gratuity amount would have added up to 200+ million, but he took the lump sum. I wonder why..). Unfortunately, they televised his ass accepting his reward, so everyone knew, and so the poor soul had to go into friggin' HIDING because of the BS that ensued - visits from imaginary relatives, fair-weather friends, and death threats to boot. I heard he's moved away now. I don't blame him one bit. Geez..

First of all i would find a nice little tax shelter to live in. Dubai, Andorra, Monaco or something on those lines. Then i would purchase properties in up to 4 different countries and move between them never living more than 89 days in one year. Many countries you can own property on a freehold basis and still have tourist (no taxation) status if you don't overstay the 90 day limit. I would hire a girl to handle all incoming stuff and make it quite clear that any unsolicited request for bussiness or donations would end up on her blacklist, which would be used if i needed a supplier of a service or wanted to make a charitable donation. I would be quite generous to the people i now call my friends and the ones who fell by the wayside i should have a pervers delight in telling them they wouldn't get a dime. Besides that i probably travel to all the places i haven't seen yet. The place i own in Denmark would be sold to a organisation for the homeless or made in to a home for abused people to seek refuge. Price would be one pint at the local pub.

The lump sum is EXACTLY the annuity amount!!!  hat I mean is: If you put the lump sum in the exact same annuity you'll eventually get paid the same as the annuity.  That's why you are allowed to make you're own decision.  So 200+ milion paid out over 20 years is about 10 milion a year.  So, one needs to find an investment that pays 10 Million annually on 88 Million invested AND keeps up with the declining principal.  I can think of only one and that's US Treasury bonds.  OR invest in your own company as termyn8tor suggests.

Well, I can say that no one in my family would have to deal with a house payment, car payment or bills.  I'd pay off my son's student loans, get him established in a house of his choosing.  I'd definitely set a huge chunk of it aside for my retirement, cuz I wouldn't give up my job.  No, really...I love my job!  I'd build my dream home, buy my dream car, but otherwise, not much else would change.

And I'd pay an attorney to go pick up the check....let his picture be the one all over the news.  Screw the lottery's condition of  publicity using my likeness!
