I was brought up Catholic...school, I even attended a Seminary for a year. I left just about the time puberty kicked in. No, no bad Priest experiences for me.

Anyway, 50 or so years later I read a quote from Aleister Crowley,

"Do what thou wilt shall be ALL of the law."

Sounds right to me! What do you think?

Oh...I'm the guy on the right.

The Golden Rule isn't a new concept realized by Crowley. It's been used throughout time by other religions.

One being by Jesus, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

It was used in the Egyptian Book of the Dead and Greek philosophy as well.

It's basic moral common sense.

He didn't use those exact words, but said the same basic thing in the Sermon on the Mount, "“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so unto them. . . .”

Matt. 7:12.

Now that I am an atheist and no longer concern myself with contradictory and illogical writings of the Bible, I have never been happier. The world makes much more sense to me now without God than with God. For example, what kind of God has a divine plan that kills 6 million innocent Jews?

I really like taking responsibility for my life now, I am my own moral compass, and to hear someone like Pat Robertson say on TV, "Put your life in the hands of God and don't worry, God loves you" is so nauseating. What Mr. Robertson is really saying is send the money to me.

I take responsibility for my life now and solve my problems and I'm not interested in being brainwashed with religious fairytales.

So I guess the secret is taking control and responsibility of your life and doing what you think is right without hurting anybody else. And I do that best by being an atheist and doing what I want not what the Pope or any other religious leader wants.. The Pope tells people in Africa not to wear condoms and now so many people have died of AIDS.

My doctor told me a couple of weeks ago his son was being confirmed, he's Catholic, I wonder if that's like having a barmitzvah.

Confirmed a what?

I was never christened because the church had this rule about the fact you had to be a regular attendee of the church to have your children christened. Obviously I had not been regularly attending due to the fact I'd only just been born. It was this kind of catch 22 situation.

I’m hoping this admin error situation isn’t going to cause any complications at the other end.

Not at all.  A bar mitzvah requires years of study.  The bar mitzvah boy then leads the congregation in worship that evening.  He is then considered to be an adult within the congregation.

AFAIK, a confirmation is not at all that difficult.

I think the key is more in realizing what is important and what is not. There is more to happiness than morality. It is an appreciation of what you have. While being immoral or amoral detracts from your potential happiness, being moral does not guarantee happiness.

Reminds me of the story of the professor and the mayonaisse jar. He fills it with golf balls and asks the class if it is full. Then pours the pebbles in, again asking if it is full. Then he pours in the sand asking the same question again. At this point they are pretty sure it's full, but then he pours his coffee into the jar. The point was to realize what is important and keep your priotities straight.

Able to help your friends ? Be thankful that you are able. Able to annoy your enemies (if any), be thankful you are able. If you're reading this I assume you have a roof over your head, electricity, a PC and internet access. You probably even have one of them newfangled tellyphones. You may have worked hard for every dime it takes to pay for all this, but remember some are not able.

Life puts some people in power over others, and I have my share of that. There are some I could make or break on a whim. One of the things high on my list is the maturity not to abuse power.

In short, the key to happiness is within each of us. When you are satisfied with your own deeds and your effect on those around you, that is irreplacable. When you stop taking things for granted and realize that there is still good in the world, that there are still opportunities, that you can actually survive and maybe even thrive, you may be happy whether you know it or not.

Yes, morality is a big part of it, but it is not the whole story.

I tend to believe happiness comes from within, it is a matter of thought, a way of thinking, which everyone is capable of. Somewhere I read, the kingdom of God lies in the self, and so the kingdom of hell is in there too, yeah, I go with that, and when people realise that there is no going to heaven or hell at the end of life, perhaps they can get on with life and celebrate it as it is, not preparation for a something other which might very well be just a fairy story. I take hell within the self to be the pits of depression, and heaven, the exact opposite.

But as for myself, I tend to try and live in the present, hold less for the future, it hasn't come yet, and there is no definate that it will, I also avoid newspapers, as they mostly seem to report on negativity, tv news, well, that is slightly better, tolerable at least, but on the whole, I try to keep away from things that don't concern me, that way, I am not influenced by the negativity inherant in things that will have no effect on me, or my surroundings.

Basically, I suppose what I do, bears some similarity to the leaving of society and going to live in a log cabin up a mountain.

Happiness is something which arises from fully committing to something you truly feel is worthwhile. As such it cannot be bought, sold or otherwise acquired except by you yourself. As such it is personal and has no moral content, for if you feel that "evil" is worthwhile and commit to it then this will also make you happy - at least to the point when others confront you perhaps and end your career.

That there is so much unhappiness in the world is because so many are unable to commit to anything and there is so little found worthy of such commitment. People chase happiness in other ways, and never find it, making them even more unhappy.
