I read a quote from Aleister Crowley... What do you think?

That Crowley was a complete nut job.

A complete nut job who reinterpreted "Do what thou wilt" so many times it could make John Kerry look consistent.

Happiness is something which arises from fully committing to something you truly feel is worthwhile. As such it cannot be bought, sold or otherwise acquired except by you yourself. As such it is personal and has no moral content, for if you feel that "evil" is worthwhile and commit to it then this will also make you happy - at least to the point when others confront you perhaps and end your career.

That there is so much unhappiness in the world is because so many are unable to commit to anything and there is so little found worthy of such commitment. People chase happiness in other ways, and never find it, making them even more unhappy.

E

Indeed.

For many years I believed that happiness comes from within. I've since come to realize that this is only partially true. The human condition also needs to feel a sense of worthy accomplishment. Commitment, drive, and accomplishment do come from within. What we attach these to typically comes from without.

The key to a happy life is developing the skill of being happy with what you already have.....

Having read Crowley pretty extensively, I think what he meant is this:  People are going to do what they are going to do.  No matter what, they are going to do as they will.  They can't help it, it's the nature of the beast.

A conformist and follower is going to conform and follow.  A killer is going to kill, a liar will lie, and a thief will steal.  A coward is going to run from a challenge.  People are going to do what they do.  There can be no other way.

Crowley's law is the only real law, because its the only law people actually follow.  Pick anyone who claims they have a moral code, and 99 times out of 100 the only parts of it they understand and agree with are the parts they are inclined to agree with.

Huh?

First, Crowley changed what he said it meant at least 5 times. You cant possibly know what he really meant.

Huh?

If one has a moral code then they understand and agree with 100% of it...otherwise they'll change the part they don't agree with. That is the reason that policies based on moral equivalency are irrational. If you really believed that your moral code isn't superior to another than you would change to the other.

Initially it was supposed to be about free will and an "inner core" that was supposed to guide the spiritual through a preordained path. Will was not what you did, but that divine spirit. It was essentially a restatement of Dostoyevsky's "everything is permitted", because if the path is preordained than you cant be held responsible.

Then he changed it to a pop psychology "self-help" mantra. Do what you will to improve yourself. At this point he was even denying the reality of the existence of others. Then when that didnt have any traction he changed it to acting not only with your own will, but taking into account the will of others. He professed some mystical order to the universe where those wills would never be in conflict, and if there was conflict one party wasnt acting in accordance with his own will.

Then, when he denied the existence of an external god he again denied the existence of others that could have any will.

Then he adopted a Buddhist interpretation where all beings are already enlightened and therefore there will is always correct. Then he pulled out some Wiccan nonsense.

He was a very confused man, and has inspired many confused followers and witches. bruhahahaha

confused? mm..perhaps he just did what he wanted.....including alcohol and drugs which made him kinda crazy.
But in the end..didn't he follow up"his law? "Do what thou wilt"
He never said..I care what others think.

Now that I am an atheist and no longer concern myself with contradictory and illogical writings of the Bible, I have never been happier. The world makes much more sense to me now without God than with God. For example, what kind of God has a divine plan that kills 6 million innocent Jews?

I really like taking responsibility for my life now, I am my own moral compass, and to hear someone like Pat Robertson say on TV, "Put your life in the hands of God and don't worry, God loves you" is so nauseating. What Mr. Robertson is really saying is send the money to me.

I take responsibility for my life now and solve my problems and I'm not interested in being brainwashed with religious fairytales.

So I guess the secret is taking control and responsibility of your life and doing what you think is right without hurting anybody else. And I do that best by being an atheist and doing what I want not what the Pope or any other religious leader wants.. The Pope tells people in Africa not to wear condoms and now so many people have died of AIDS.

My doctor told me a couple of weeks ago his son was being confirmed, he's Catholic, I wonder if that's like having a barmitzvah.

In the Lutheran church, and Catholic, takes regular study usually at least one year, saturdays spent at Catechism, quizes, tests and only then can one be confirmed.  Not exactly like a bar/bat mitzvah, but not "easy" either.

For some reason, the above doesn't sound like happiness, it's another unhappy post about religion.  Something that seems to fill every waking moment, an obsession with no happy outcome.

To me, the secret of a happy life is simple.  Choose to be happy!  Happiness is not a right, an endowment, or even a privilidge.  It's a choice.  One can either choose to be happy or not.

'I heard of a saint who had loved you,
so I studied all night in his school.
He taught that the duty of lovers
is to tarnish the golden rule.
And just when I was sure that his teachings were pure
he drowned himself in the pool.
His body is gone but back here on the lawn
his spirit continues to drool.'

The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.

Ah, make the most of what ye yet may spend
Before we too into the dust descend
Dust into Dust and under Dust to lie
Sans wine, sans song, sans singer, sans end.

the rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam – 11th Century

I agree with eyesopened. We make choices all our lives "of what we yet may spend." Making those choices is not easy, I think, because there are so many pressures to conformity, conventionality, and duties. So many oughts to do and musts to do, and so many distractions by mind numbing entertainments and drugs. Sometimes people don't even try to work out what makes them happy. They live by circumstance and lazy convenience. Then, oops..........times up!

I like to think many in the kinkster community are self-aware and making the effort, trying to make the right choice for themselves, but reading the Profiles and listening to some of the wailing in the posts leaves me uncertain there is all that much happiness here. Wonder what you think?

Vincent

What is this ?

Are people really coming to the realization that emotion is a choice ?

Is this the end of the age of Aquarius or something ?

What a cute thread.
One of the key's to a happy life is to:

LIVE {authentically}, LOVE {authentically} and LAUGH {authentically} as much as you can!!

I do mean authentically, because if you are not living your life authentically, you have not really lived.
I don't plan on being on my deathbed saying, "I was not myself! I lived a lie, I was a fake! I was never myself, I was just a follower, I did not live authentically!"

If I check out of here tomorrow, I can certainly say "2 roads diverged and the wood and I, I took the road less travelled by, and GOD, I loved my life."
[:D]

Laughter has to be one of the best "medicine's", and I laugh a lot.
