LMAO -

Just an note:

They (those people) might have taken a "bounty out on <her> head" - but, (as much as I am loathe to admit it) my son is a "Trekker", ao I know they are eyeing you pretty crtically and taking a vote for calling them "Trekkies".

Trekkies all over the world just took a bounty out on your head.

Kirk was a slut. I think if there's a choice between Kirk and Picard, I'd pick Picard. Of course Janeway is the best captain of all the Trek shows.

Yes - I know...

Janeway was never captain of the Enterprise though.

Your choices for Enterprise Captains would be Christopher Pike (Pilot Episode), Kirk, John Harriman - Star Trek: Generations, Captain of the Enterprise 1701 B when it left dry dock, Rachael Garett - Captain of NCC 1701 C, Yesterday's Enterprise, Picard, William Riker (The Borg episodes), Mr. Spock and of course, Johnathon Archer, the 'first' Enterprise captain. For a bit of flavor you can add in Max Forrest from I.S.S Enterprise. ;)

I just read this tread from it's beginning, so here's my catchup:
What about Captain William Decker?  From the Motionless picture?  Alright, kirk assumed command being admiral an all, but decker was officially captain of the Enterprise.
Kahn was the best character in Star Trek, followed by Worf, no, I take that back, seven of nine is the ultimate switch, I'd assyminlate that! Great story build-up and definition. but as far as captains go....Jean Luc Picard was the best 'captain'.  Don't get me wrong I liked the others, but archer was too informal, campy, and kirk was out of the solar system (right out).  Picard had control, class, diplomacy.  Fine you didn't want to 'hangout' be pals or anything with him, but as position of captain goes you don't want that.  Kirk and archer are more 'pals' than leaders, Kirk is a glory hound, not good at leading, assigning tasks, planning. Archer is in between kirk and picard.  Decker and Pike, well Decker was having too much of a power stuggle with Kirk, Pike was alright, but he has kirk flaws(since one was to replace the other).  Pike also didn't have as much charisma as Kirk.  Pike's No.1 was a hotty, ie nurse chappel, majel barret-roddenberry, Loxana troy.  Too bad the producers felt that the audiance wasn't ready for a female in command.
Now, I'm a GEEK, not a nerd!  I defined myself this back in the 80's somebody called 'Murry', a character in a tv show 'riptide', a nerd, and one of the detectives went to bat for him and very seriously said "He's not a nerd, He's a Geek! A Geek is somebody who looks at the world differently!"  That is when I embraced my 'geekness'.
I'm also a 'Treker', 'live long and prosper', 'peace and long life', I don't have a uniform or costume, yet, mainly cause I'm  klingon, and my leathers are all I need.  When the air and space museum opened up here in hampton, va. the Klingon fan club assisted in ushering.  I walked in wearing my biker jacket, chaps, leather gloves, hair pulled back in ponytail.  Chains and studs on jacket.  I scared the 'Klingons'.
I have never been nor ever will be a 'closet' treker, I don't think there's a closet that can hold me!

I actually think it was Captain Christopher Pike who was the ORIGINAL captain on the show where Spock was on trial for mutiny because he was trying to bring Pike's body back to Talos 4.

Kirk would be next on my list.

Pike was the first captain of the first series, He was in the pilot episode, that was cut down to a two-part episode called the menagerie. Where Spock was on trial for kidnapping pike to bring him  back to talos 4

As far as best to serve under, I'd say Picard.  His crew members had a much better chance of surviving each episode.  If, however, they were fighting each other in roughly equal ships, I'd put my money on Kirk to win.

Picard would open a channel and say, "Let us negotiate."

Kirk would respond, "Here's my first offer," as he fired a spread of photon torpedoes.

OK, I'm a fan, but guys, this just goes waaay past geekdom!

My vote? Archer and the NX-01 had a LOT of promise, but was killed by politicking at Paramount. Otherwise, he could have been the best easily.

As it stands, it has to be Kirk. I was never one for Picard's and TNG's PC'er than thou attitude - and have you noticed how BADLY that show has aged? Much worse than the original series.

Best person to helm a starship overall? That fellow from Hill Street Blues who had the Excelsior in Search for Spock. Scotty pissed all over him...so funny!

This isn't a fair question if you think about it. Star Trek was way before it's time and Kirk was a great captain for that time. The show had an obvious formula to it... They go to a planet. The guy wearing the red shirt would die. Kirk would get the woman. Spock and the others would figure out what was wrong and how to fix it. They fix it. The woman Kirk is in love with either dies or is left behind. Final scene on the bridge yucking it up... fade to black. Don't get me wrong, I loved the series and still do. The stories were pretty interesting and entertaining and after all, isn't that the point?

I would take this one step further and point out that the original was a reflection of the American worldview at the time.

1)  The Federation prime directive prohibiting messing with new planets and supporting peace and freedom with superior weaponry.  Going forth as the stereotypical boy scout do-gooder.

2)  The Klingon menace.  Similarly armed with the destruction of the Federation as it's primary goal.  Switch Klingon to the way American's viewed the Soviet Union.

3)  The Romulans.  A menace or not?  We dont really know, but they are weird and as long as we dont cross each other, we wont find out.  Replace Romulans with Communist China and you have our relationship with them in the late 1960s.  We even had a demilitarized zone in the north of Vietnam and Korea so our militaries would never cross each other.

Pure camp, reflecting the campiness of the time it was created.  I like TNG, but the original had so much going for it.  Cardboard sets.  Plastic characters.  Simplistic plots.  The new one shows what money and good writing talent can do to an idea, but I prefer the original more.

I watched the origianl series for most of my younger life.( in syndication of course)  When the new series came out, i kind of boycotted it out of loyalty to Kirk, Spock et al.  So of course my vote is for Captain Kirk.

Although i had a raging crush on Captain Pike

My problem with Kirk is that there really are Navy officers like him ... young hotshots who have been promoted incredibly quickly through the ranks ... but in real life, they tend to get their men killed because they think they can testosterone their way through any problem. Kirk wasn't so much a starship captain as a superhero.

My problem with Picard is that he had no sense of command. He'd have to call a meeting and get everyone's opinion before he'd issue any commands. The whole bridge structure played to this problem, with the first officer and the ship's counselar just sitting their next to him as if he needed their help to bolster his authority.

Archer never did much for me and Pike didn't get enough screentime to judge. Janeway always seemed to me like a bad joke.

My vote? Picard in repose, Kirk in action.
