Brain -> The Rise Of Republican Nihilism (12/24/2009 7:57:55 PM)

This article is so awesome, it just made me me feel soooooo gooooooood. Mitch McConnell is so full of malarkey but when he talks about how the American people do not support the healthcare reform. The American people did not support child labor laws or women voting either Mitch, yeah right.

The Rise Of Republican Nihilism | The New Republic

Does the Republican Party have any ideas? The query may have a familiar ring. Five years ago, the question of substance was demanded incessantly of the Democrats. Indeed, in one of those intellectual fads that periodically sweep through Washington, the political class became obsessed with the notion that conservatives had unambiguously won what everybody was calling “the war of ideas.”

Republicans scolded the opposition. (President Bush chastised Democrats in Congress: “[I]f they have no ideas or policies except obstruction, they should step aside and let others lead.”)

(Click here to read about the history of conservatives opposing insane progressive ideas, such as women's suffrage and child labor laws.)

OK. Democrats are in charge. One thing I notice is the high level of incompetence on Democrats side. Just take some time to analyze what they actually have done with the three important issues (economy, health care, climate change). You may disagree, I think two problems have been made worse and there is no progress in climate change. Therefore America is toast: nihilism and incompetence combined march together.

Moonhead -> RE: The Rise Of Republican Nihilism (12/25/2009 5:15:45 AM)

I'm dubious those are the biggest three issues. Certainly nobody in the Republican party gives a shit about climate change, because it's an evil liberal hoax.

servantforuse -> RE: The Rise Of Republican Nihilism (12/25/2009 7:16:44 AM)

I don't think that global warming is a liberal hoax. I just think it is a hoax, period..

Sanity -> RE: The Rise Of Republican Nihilism (12/25/2009 7:21:38 AM)

Its a Capitalist hoax. Al Gore and his business partners are set to make billions.

servantforuse -> RE: The Rise Of Republican Nihilism (12/25/2009 7:25:39 AM)

I thought Obama's trip was a hoot. He landed in Copenhagen in a snowstorm, and came back to DC in a blizzard.

What does it take to keep some focus on reality here? Nobody denies "climate change". The questions revolve around whether or not CO2 (anthropogenic or otherwise) is really a driver of warming, and the motivation behind "solutions" that seem designed to have a greater impact on the economic well-being of billions of people, and the sovereignty of nation states, than on global climate.

Thank you, Kirata.

Good luck with the focus thing. I'm not hopeful, in either direction.

Agreed, but a few thoughts about this lack of focus. The prospect of changing the climate of the entire world is such an abstraction, it lends itself to the worst aspects of doctrinaire politics- free market disciples on one side, central government advocates on the other.
The real issue, as you allude to, is what to do about our effect on the natural environment- the air we breathe, the soil we plant in, the water we drink.
No one can deny we are having a terrible effect on these, and that these effects directly endanger the lives and security of billions of people.

Its been my experience that thebigger the problem, the less chance of having a rational discussion about it- talking about how to "fix the planet" is so large, so abstract, we may as well talk about how to avert The Rapture.

Maybe a more fruitful discussion would be to have more targeted discussions- for example, how excessive coal mining poisons the watersheds, and pollutes the air. And this leads to discussions of using less electricity, by making buildings (that consume 60% of all energy) more efficient by adoptiong more stringent building standards.

None of this has crap to do with Al Gore's waistline, or Obama's birth certificate.

Sadly until such time as a Republican makes a film about climate change, it's all about Al Gore. Pathetic, isn't it?

Several commentators today pointed out that the health care insurance companies are still pouring money into the effort to defeat any bill. Why?  Because they fear what can be built onto the statute as finally passed. Ditto the republicans.  If a bill passes and is moderately successful, the republicans can be in for deep problems even if they pull off big wins in 2010.  A very recent poll shows about 60% favor a government option if you phrase the question properly and the republicans are 100% on one side of the issue.  What happens when the cost of insuring a family of four rises to $20,000 and everyone points at the republicans as the party which stopped big reforms on that issue?

As for Obama, this is the first time in 60 to 80 years the matter even got to a vote.  It looks like it will become law.  The Democrats worked for reform while the republicans worked against reform.  Who are the most worried?  From my view, the republicans are the most worried.  If the reform works long term, republicans probably have assured minority status for years.

While I do not like the bill,  the repeated statement "that it is something we can build on gives me hope." I would guess from what was said that a public option will be engraffted on the statute in a few years and the health care industry is appalled at the prospect.

Thus, I give Obama a passing grade on heath care thus far.  If he uses the bill to spring board to add more provisions later, the grade goes to an A.

Brain -> RE: The Rise Of Republican Nihilism (12/26/2009 1:26:51 PM)

Thank you very much, it was kind of you to say that. I couldn't get back to you before Christmas but I hope you had a good one with your family. I got what I wanted Wednesday night when I saw my family doctor and he gave me a requisition for an MRI which I need to check out Dr. Zamboni's theory about multiple sclerosis. When people say health care is rationed in Canada it's just not true. You can get what you need if you have a good reason. In case you haven't heard of this, this link will help explain what I'm talking about.
