Status: offline 		After the first 8 weeks of boot camp, the marine starts his next 4 weeks of gunnery training. The moment he's given a sniper riffle he imediatly takes our 4 drill instructors 1200 yards away with 4 shots within seconds before his group turns and opens fire on him. At the guys funeral, he's given a medal of marksmenship.

I've heard this story atleast 4 different times by 4 different marines from various boot camps and service times. So did it really happen? If or if not, what do you think of the story? Are you sadden by the death of four drill instructors or do you find humor/irony in the award given to the shooter?

I have not heard of this happening. although i am not active there are a couple resources i have that i could check if you would like me to do so

They should have given him an Expert medal!!

Status: offline 		I'm amazed a Marine would tell such a story. Four first-round hits at 1000+ and a Marksman medal? That's the lowest award. He probably would have qualified for Expert.

I'm sure such stories go around, but details like that make me think they are told by civilians.

I'd also point out that someone in basic rifle training is unlikely to see, let alone fire, an M-40, but since that detail is inherent to the joke I'll pass. You'll notice that the Marksman/Expert dichotomy is not inherent so it can go down as a genuine error of ignorance rather than a suspension of disbelief.

Did I tell you guys about the time I was babysitting and I kept getting these threatening phone calls, and when I called the police, they said to get out of the house NOW, because the calls were coming from INSIDE the HOUSE?????

Status: offline 		I live in Jacksonville NC.. home to Camp Lejune USMC... no story of such does now or has floated around. I've been associated with the Military my whole life, from my father, to my daddy, to 2 husbands, brother, and 2 nephews. Never has this story been repeated.

I doubt the story.... and knowing what I know of the military, right out of boot camp.... possible.. but highly unlikely. One who could remotely shoot this well, would of been pulled out of boot camp and placed in possible Ranger, Seal, specialty section of the military.

Now before I typed out that information, I just got off phone with my dad who spent 30+ in and is still active with many who are still active duty as well.

Though after seeing "Full Metal Jacket" I also inquired as to the DI's.... and was told.. yes.. they use to be just like that. And was told there was more than 1 back in the day, that was taken out by a soldier that felt... picked on. But not 4 in one day as described by one as described. But now a days.. because of knew laws, and etc... highly unlikely.

Status: offline 		Everyone keeps saying how this recruit would have received medals for his expertise. Wouldn't he have immediately been arrested, court-martialed, tried for capital murder and been given life in prison???

It's a joke that says he was killed in the act but got a medal for the shooting.

There is a real tradition of this sort of thing. Napoleon gave a medal to a general for winning a battle and then ordered him shot because he disobeyed orders to do so.

Status: offline 		alright i actually did some research on this story and ironically there is not site pertaining to its truthfullness nor if its fake. At least not that i found.

as for the irnony of the story.......... well all i have to say is brings a whole new meaning to anger management........EEP!

remind me not to be around a gun range with a marine!

I've always found that those who seem to be hung up on jokes about the Marine Corps seem to be a bit jealous that they never had the courage to join themselves. Just my 2 cents.

Yup, we tell jokes about the Corps but they have a very different flavor.

An Iraq Army general picks himself off the ground, looks at the hole in his helmet and yells "Captain, there is a Marine sniper on that hill. Take your entire company and kill him.

Two hours later, the captain, much the worse for wear, reports to the general with his surviving six men. "Sorry, General, but we miscalculated. There are two Marines up on that hill."

Despite how true it may be for some. It's not the case for me. The bottom line is that I like to tell jokes. Excluding someone from jokes would be an insult. You wouldn't want me to insult the marines would you? Besides, the more I pick on someone, the more I like them. Other than that, there was never a lack of courage but more of the fact that I failed my physical based on one breathing/possible asthma attack that put me in the hospital for two days. So all I can do is support with donations, pay taxes, store supplies in the event of a castarophic natural disaster or a massive invasion on US soil and vote Republican. I also keep an eye out for suspicious terroism. I may not be a soldier but I'll still fight if and when I get a shot.

Any how, feel free to reply when you actually have 2 cents that can contribute to the OP.

I don't quite understand your logic here Fang.  Do you tell jokes about African Americans, picking on them and proving how much you like them?  Or do you exclude us from your jokes, thus insulting us?  Curious minds want to know.

Jokes are always funny when they're at the expense of someone else.  Referring to ANY member of the Armed Forces as yellow, as you did in the link above, is insulting to ALL of those who served in any branch of the Armed Services.

Status: offline 		Do I tell African American jokes? Hell yeah. I never have been able to understand the term "African American." I've never heard of an African Frenchman, African Irishman, African Canadian, African Mexican, or even an African Austrailian. This is an only in America term. So a black person from Austrailia visits  the US. Everyone here calls him an "African American" What would make him upset?  Hmmm, well he has very little if any ties to Africa and he's just here as a tourist. There's nothing American about him. Did you hear about one guy who won an African American Scholarship? He was born in Africa and then imigrated to the USA for a better life. Being from Africa and now a US citizen, he applied and won the scholar ship. However, he happened to be white/caucasion. But why should anyone be upset about it. After all, most of the other people who applied for the scholarship where never even born in Africa.

Refering to anyone in the military as yellow: By yellow I guess you are thinking of "coward." To bad you didn't get the joke "Start out green, turn yellow, and die in bunches." Have you ever watch any of the training courses or spoken to marines about basic training? Let me enlighten you. In training, a marine usually wears green. After camp, most marines will wear yellow camo when going out on patrol and misions. In times of war, Recon Marines are normally the first to go in fighting. As one marine described it to me, the common theory on this is to have the Marines kill as much as possible untill they get killed making the advancement easier for the army that follows behind. So like a bananna, you start out green, turn yellow, and then die along with your team. In this joke, the color yellow has nothing to do with calling anyone a coward. Comprende?
