Most who know me here know this has been a bad year for me. Job losses, break ups, Illness and death.

For me I have been through the difficulty of firsts. My mother after a short struggle with A.L.S. died 3 days before thanksgiving. Friends gathered in support but eventually all get back to their lives. So I and my family have dealt with first thanksgiving, hannukah, Christmas and soon the new year and beyond without the glue of the family.

Sadness comes in waves. Sometimes i need people, sometimes I need to be alone.This forum has been a blessing to me during all this.

I know there are many reasons people feel blue. Rejection, isolation, etc. Maybe even let down of holidays not being the fairy tale we expect it to be.

So my question to the rest of you. Have you ever been blue during the holidays? What do you do to overcome?

Hi lusciouslips19,

my xmas holidays are blue since 2007...as it does not have much meaning to me in my current situation where I live in a country where I would prefer not to be and have no intentions to go home either...for me xmas is at the moment just like every other day...once I leave here I am happy to change that...but at present not and I just learned to accept that :o) Best wishes, sweetie

I can relate to you lusciouslips19,

I dread the holidays, mainly due to many losses of close family members The people I enjoyed most spending the holidays with are no longer living. And I too loss my mother, though it was many years ago, a few days prior to Thanksgiving.

Some years I celibrate with friends or my daughter. This year, I decided to let Christmas pass without ceremony. I turned off the phone and rented a bunch of movies. Not having the constant reminders from the TV and outside surroundings, has so far made the day pass without much displeasure. A really good book would have been a big plus. Next year, if I'm feeling as I did this year, I'm just going to plan a trip to a spa somewhere tropical.

I know I'll have some explaining to do for not taking phone calls. I heard a message coming from my answering machine about I must have woke up with a lump of goal in my sock or something like that.

I'm so glad this day is almost over. Good thing, though it might not seem so, I've had my moments, I'm getting through it fairly well.

Yes....for one reason in particular.
I have found that the whiskey is not so much helping as making me pass out on occasion to make the day go by faster.

The holiday is blue for me almost every year. This year is no different.

What do I do? This year I'm sleeping most of the day because I am sick as a dog.

Most years...hhm...well..I guess I try to make the most of it by putting on a smile and pretending it's a fun day for my kid and my friends who might stop by and then trying to go to sleep as early as possible hoping it passes by quickly.

Some days you just have to make the most of it for those around you.

Lushy: I hold on for dear life. Clouds do eventually part, even for a little while, long enough to get a breather. Life is beautiful, and it's fucking hard, and harsh. Keep the good things in mind.

Whenever you think that things are bad, they can and are worse for many other people. Spend some time as a volunteer helping others much less fortunate this holiday season. You will be rewarded many times over..

Count me in here.. This year it's over even before it began..

The project I'd got involved with with the homeless over Christmas never really got off the ground, I'm also ill and have spent much of Christmas Day asleep..

At the moment I'm sleeping a lot..

My best to all of you Blue People!

I had a pleasant evening with a female friend last evening who put some good food on the table. (Kaviar also, but I did not even see it as it was spoiled, having been opened twice before.) We exchanged some series and movies and watched The Incredibles, The nightmare before Christmas, and the unaired pilot of the sixties series 'Lost in space'.

At the moment I am listening to the top 2000 (see the forum Polls and ORS); recommended for all Blue People.

This second Christmas day I will sleep most of the day and perhaps add a couple of paragraphs to a short story.

Yep, holiday blues, but I cannot put my finger on why

But, it is the same every year, there is something about the holiday but what. I have tried to search memories, I don't believe anything happened at xmas past to cause this, but, what is it,the feeling is I just feel I don't fit in to xmas if that makes any sense.

Oh, I have in the past spent xmas with dear friends and family, they are very thoughtful and generous, they make their best efforts, but it is me, I feel there is a deep sadness inside I cannot fathom or shake off.

Xmas is a holiday I dread every year

Why, Aneirin? It is the holiday of celibration at year's end (actually December 21st), of the death and rebirth of the Creator / of the Old year becoming the New Year / of Santa Claus, of rejuvenation, of the birth of innocence and righteousness (in Jesus Christ), not a god but a man who was going to be resurrected; in a magical sense it is a promise of the Divine to each and every part of us. Rejoice!

Very early on - 18 years of age - i had to let go my idealised Christmas day - i was in nursing school, too far away to get to my parents home, and we worked Christmas day.

It took a couple of years for me to realise that the childhood version of Christmas, with the long drawn out anticipation and suspense, and the huge reveal could never be matched. So my friends and i made our own Christmas, and for the most part, i don't get blue on the day.

Christmas is on of those holidays that can never live up to those memories most of us have of being a child and anticipating the day. I have seen similar feelings from Americans with Thanksgiving - it never lives up to how good it was when they were children. And to me it is just a day off and turkey eating. Yum! I have no history with TG so for me it is just fun.

I think you (generic you) have to accept that it is an emotion-filled day, accept it, and go on. Perhaps if you look at what made it so special as a child, and try to recreate some of that feeling as an adult would help.

For me than sense of new start is in september. The start of a new school year when younger and the fact that our jewish new year are in the fall.

There is that. I have not investigated that in depth, but the start of school might conceivably date back to the pre-Christian calendar. Likely it is harvest related as well?

Christianity is rather confused in its calendar as well. In The Netherlands we have four celebrations of years end:

The lunar (jewish) calender does follow harvest time as new year. I believe it was the romans who changed the christian celebrations to coincide with already pagan holidays of winter and spring solstice. Hence Christmas and Easter.

I detest the holiday season. When I was younger it was due to the december birthday curse, people who have a bday during the week before or after the day usually know what it is like to be screwed and forgotten. Later it was due to being raped on that week. Now it is disgust for the over blown greed that I see around. Having worked in retail and watched the season spread like a bloom of invasive algae it bothers me more. Remember when things turned xmas'y the day after thanksgiving? We used to have halloween, then think about thanksgiving, then get ready for xmas and now it is one long holiday culminating in how much can you give me?

This year my bday still sucked but decades of the same old is not so bad when you are used to it being that way. I have been fairly lucky that my munch group has not dwindled down during the season and that has kept me sane. I have spent more time in forums which would ordinarily be ok but this month it has been hit by an abundance of jackass posts which rarely amuse me. Instead I have looked over fet more closely for topics and..lol I even went into one of this places chat rooms last night! LOL that was a giggle.

The holidays are magic, bu not the magic we grew up to expect. Instead it is the ability to see the object coming, and learn to distract, juggle, do a bit of slight of hand and wait it out until before you know it people have tired of the game and moved on to other things. :) February 16th... that is my day! lol and I can hardly wait till it arrives.

this is assuming that anyone that has the blues is thinking their life is worse.

I am not against volunteerism, I think everyone should, but not just around holiday blues time. That is like only going to church on xmas and easter.

I had the idea to get pissed and stay pissed over xmas, so I got a litre of dark rum, now two thirds the way through the bottle, and have not been pissed yet, so thinking spirits was a bad idea. Tv has sucked as usual, so am hoping to slide down to the pub tonight, as they got a beer called santa's slayer which is very morish as I found out on xmas eve. Xmas eve was the highlight, twelve good friends on santa's slayer, a good time and nothing christmassy about it

I dont find alcohol to be uplifting in times of depression. Unless you want to cry around strangers or pick a fight!

I keep myself away from others when I am in this kind of mood, but I realise the mood has shifted as day turns into night. Night is for friends and laughter, some of which I hope to find tonight whilst worshipping the Goddess Ninkasi.
