The difference between the terms ‘subject’ and ‘citizen’ was greater when the monarchy had real tangible power, thus it’s difference is mostly bound within a historical context. In this day and age the difference is pure semantics for all intents and purpose. The ways and mechanisms that exist within the UK to curtail individual freedoms also now exist within the US but they are called other things. I’d go further in terms of practicalities and say I actually have more freedoms because for example when a police force arrests me they have to charge me within a certain period of time or release me. Can you say the same for all crimes you may be accused of? You are getting more like what we used to be by the day. People they can’t seem to recognise that rights are universal and if you take away a certain persons rights then that precedent affects everyone from that point on. I think people have the unrealistic 'this will never happen to me because I follow the law' view.

They just took it on the quiet side. the word "under" is key here. (Keep in mind Sovereigns are "over".)
