I'm cross posting this from another website where I got flamed for my response on the issue, and am curious about others responses. The OP's premise was "I think that BDSM attracts the advanced intellectuals"

My response is sure, there are smart people into BDSM, but there are also borderline mentally challenged folks too, as evidenced by the incoherent writing, lack of common courtesy and general lack of effort exemplified by profiles full of spelling and grammatical mistakes. That is not to say that spelling or grammar make someone intelligent (though I have my own thoughts on that) but the lack of effort on a profile to me, in this day and age where if you are online, it's pretty safe to assume you have access to spell check, is a sign of intellectual laziness.

So anyway, is there a disproportionate number of smart mcsmarts around here (let's be honest, and stroke more fun things than egos)?

There does seem to be a disproportionate number of freaks and geeks... I'd agree.

THE TEST:
Statistically, one in four people suffer from mental illness... think of three friends; if they're fine, then it's YOU!!!

You know Elysium,

I know it's not PC, but I always thought that about the bisexual groups I knew in other cities.  It was fulllll of geeks and nerds.  I used to think, "can't you be cool and bi?"  *I was cool and bi*  Ok, maybe not cool, but def. bi.  And coolish.

best,
sunshine sitting at the cool table....

I haven't noticed an over abundance of intellectual people in the area that i live - but then, maybe they are hiding from me. The intelligence levels seem to run about the way they do in regular society...... Gosh, what a shock.

OP, it sounds as if your OP was stroking their own ego with their theory. Amazing isn't it?

I tend to keep company with nerdy, geeky, or freaky people, so my stats are likely skewed.

pfft to pc. My dear sunshine,  I too am a bastion of coolness, and bi.  Somehow I effortlessly manage to skirt the line of being exceedingly intellectual, but not a nerd or a geek in the least.  Maybe we should start a cool kids club? We can convene at the cool kids table you're sitting at...

A lot of us are into comics, sci fi, and Renaissance fairs. That is pretty geeky.

There is no way of knowing, as the majority of members do not communicate on these forums, and the majority of BDSM aficionados aren't on CM. "Illogical question", Spock would say.

i work in geek oriented work place and ex and all his friends were geeks and i will admit i am a bit of a geek..

It actually hinders me online communication wise, because ive been chatting so long with geeks in work messaging, i abbreviate everything and leave out "the" and other words.

People who dont read geek speak think i cant put a coherant sentence together. When i chat with Sir, i try to remember to be more formal.

I definitely wouldn't say BDSM types have a higher average IQ, but it does seem to me, purely based on personal experience and no attempt to quantify, that quite a few people round here either don't particularly like hanging out in mainstream society or have various social issues that mean they can't hang out in mainstream society. And if you aren't going to the parties with the cool kids, you're more likely to be sitting around playing WoW and reading a book. Or maybe I only talk to geeks like me.

I'm in the chess club and I'm not ashamed of it!

I'd imagine that there may be some correlation between BDSM and nerds/geeks.  I say this simply because both tend to be seen as forms of social deviance, and those with deviant tendencies are generally more comfortable around others who are also atypical (whatever atypical may be).   I would also suggest that perhaps many people who are in the BDSM community are nerdy/geeky because they have sometimes felt the need to seclude themselves from the rest of the world.  In this seclusion, they end up acquiring "nerdy" hobbies - like video games (specifically mmo's, for example, that would allow for some social interaction), chess, or renaissance fairs (to use previous examples) - activities that tend to attract like-minded people.

Granted, I've never come across any studies that may suggest this; this is just from my own experience.

I just gave stranger in a strange land to Master for His trip, a well timed reference :)

This is a very interesting post and I've been pondering this. Some if my friends think I am a bit if an elitist because I like to date uber geeky guys (I point out that thus hasn't always been the case but yes I want someone highly intelligent and I don't see anything wrong with that). But how does one measure geekiness or intelligence? I find it difficult. I do think that there are a lot of people on CM who have trouble with basic grammar and communication skills. I also do agree that there seems to a lot of people with social issues. I don't think that there are more geeky people as in intelligent but rather more dorky people in terms of people not fitting in with the norm. There is a difference between knowing the norm and choosing to be different because you are confident in your independent views versus having no idea that you are really "unusual" and always wondering why it is impossible for you to fit in. I think the former is comfortable and happy with themselves and chooses kinks of their choice to expand their full life while the latter seeks kink to escape the real world that they cannot seem to fit into. Just my thoughts and hope nobody takes that the wrong way. I would say personally I am certainly intelligent and geeky by any measure but I was probably more dorky when I was younger and a lot less confident.

I will say that for everone on CM irregardless of education, intelligence, grammar skills etc I have so much respect for everyone for their courage and openness in expressing their individuality. That is what I love about this site is that you can be yourself with others willing to be themselves no matter how freaky you are :)
