I have read at least 7-10 articles that are predicting that unemployment will probably remain
high in the United States for at least the next 3-7 years.
I will post 2 links, but feel free to research this yourself.

Even as Economy Mends, a Jobless Decade May Loom - NYTimes.com

UCLA 2010 Economic Forecast: High Unemployment | Wall Street Survivor University

With 4 days left till a New Year, I doubt we will have any "Magical Job Recovery" coming any time soon.
I read or heard somewhere that if we "create" 300,000 jobs a month, the unemployment numbers will only go down to about 8% next year.
I certainly don't see that happening, at all.

It looks like we will have several years of very high unemployment, and maybe an even longer period of people being "under" employed.
This is my take on the unemployment situation for at least 2010-2015.

Do you agree with my thoughts/and the thought of many on high unemployment for at least the next 1-5 years?
Also, what do you think could/should be done to create jobs and also help the millions that are underemployed?

they need that to usher in their new agenda.

I always find the word "create" + "jobs" problematic.

With unemployment as high as it is, many jobs will have to "created" or "encouraged".

As a worst-case scenario, that sounds about right. If we're lucky it won't be quite that bad, and hopefully it won't be any worse - which it could very well be if a few things don't fall the way we hope they do. The economy is very weak and fragile, and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

And there's really nothing we can do but ride it out. And hope to god it doesn't get even worse.

The well is dry unfortunately.

The word create sadly has nothing to do with demand, (need).  (supply and demand)

In tough times the people cant afford to hire people so who can?

There is only one way they can and thats put it on the credit card and more debt expansion.  :)

I guess all that corporate bailout didnt pay out so good after all :D  LOL

I'm right there with you. You can't create any significant new jobs unless there's a demand for workers, and I don't see that happening anytime soon. In the long run, the market's going to have to sort this one out itself.

lol Rich, what about the last guy, that you voted in and was President 90% of the last decade?

The one that was driving the train off the bridge, then laid low for the last several years of his Presidency, than quietly snuck out the back door last January?
The one that people had given up on the last year of his Presidency, and was basically a "lame duck"?

We still remember good old baby Bush.
He left such fond memories.

Small business accounts for roughly 80% of the jobs in this country.  Most of those are on Sub-S or Sch C's and that puts the gross income directly on the "individual".  If the business makes $250,000 a year and employees 3-4 people, leaving a net of say 30-50 K for the "individual" after expenses, yet "this" govt is going to call this individual "rich" because of the gross, and penalize the crap outta them with taxes etc.  The entrepreneurial spirit, in the framework of capitalism, will boom this economy faster than anything else, but the govt has to get out of the way and quit penalizing the success of small business.  Let the individual enjoy the fruits of their sweat and labor, and give incentives to employee people .. THAT's where the jobs are "created".  No one wants to work their ass off just to turn around and give it to someone who is too dam lazy to work.  Just like trying to give everyone in a school class the same grade averaged out between the workers and the slackers...with the incentive removed for reaping the benefits of hard work, the workers quit "working" for the benefit of those who don't and the whole thing suffers ..

I've brought this up before, but if you have a good email addy, what the hell.  Build a national high speed rail network.  Start by massively streamlining the permit process, because the idea is NOT to provide an economic stimulus package to environmental whacko lawyers.  No messing around with trying to get the stations into the middle of the cities, just grab about 10-15,000 acres of mostly "for lease" industrial parks on the edge of town by eminent domain, and we already have a good infrastructure base in place.  We put restrictions in place on hiring only those legal to work in this country not only on the prime contractors, but on the sub-contractors as well, and their sub-contractors, and we put some very sharp and punitive teeth into those restrictions.  Yeah, we spend yet more money we don't have, but on the end of it, we have something new that can become a contributor to the economy itself.

My advice to anyone under 25 who is looking, join the military.  Full benefits from go, skills that will last a lifetime, and if the economy is still in the shitter when they get out (could be, there is no guarantee Pres. Obama won't get re-elected), they'll have some excellent funding to go to school.

I saw on local news recently that economist were saying that by possibly next Feb. things will be worse than they currently are now. I do not know what it will be, nor where it is going. But as one of the unemployed (for some time now) I'm ready for a change......however the change that was promised to so many, I do not think they see it as good at all.

Both you and ostrichman, have some good idea's!
I have always thought we need a GOOD national high speed rail system that would

connect us across the United States.
When you think about our transit system, it is very outdated, we have NO national
rail system going into the year 2010!!!
Great post Rich.
Has anyone heard of the US High Speed Rail Association?
Check this out!

Why?  It's not that hard, although usually the cure is worse than the disease.  The government could create short term jobs by:

1. Upping deficit spending.
2. Reducing the borrowing rate to near zero.

Let me step on a soapbox here and state that part of the problem is that the focus is on jobs, when it should be on fostering an economy which can create jobs.  With my technical bias, I would like those to be in tech fields.

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is a very nice program that people seem unaware of.  It releases grants to small businesses to develop means to meet the needs of government agencies.  Any patents developed during the course of this work belong to the company doing the work.  So it fuels technical development.  There was a company named Sievers Instruments that grew to several hundred people on the basis of technology developed under SBIR (it was bought by Ionics and then GE).

I like this approach.  There is a strong bias towards small business and towards developing new technology.  The grant money is small - $50K to $100K is typical, which isn't felt by the government but is enough for an entrepreneur to begin a company on a shoestring.

That's the kind of program I could get behind.

1. Upping deficit spending?  I hope it does not come to that.  We might
as well just give China one of our states.  Let's just give them New Jersey, and
call it a day.  Most people would not even miss that state, and that would clear
up our debt problem!

2. I doubt that interest rates will keep going up with the current economy.
Zero interest rates would be nice, but I doubt that will happen.

For many years, the United States was a rich country because we stood on our own. We manufactured our own products and didn't engage in free trade with third world countries. I think the United States could become strong once again if we eliminated free trade and started manufacturing again instead of outsourcing. We need to start enforcing our laws against companies hiring illegal immigrants. Also, we need single payer health care because it's the right thing to do and more US citizens would want to stay in this country instead of immigrating to other more developed countries because they are tired of living in fear of what could happen if they get sick.

Mia, you are correct and I've read some of the same articles you've read and I also watch the business channel and they too have mentioned that more than a few times.
And meanwhile "our government" keeps telling us how "good" this "global economy" is!
When will Washington start to realize that it's high time to start getting o-u-t of those "free-trade" deals?
I'm doing my part contacting my congressman and senators! Come on people, let's start making some noise on this!
It'd be funny as hell to see the headline; "Online Bondage and Discipline Site was the seed to Nafta's End."

Instead of choking off the energy America needs to grow the economy we need to look at ways to open up more of our resources. We need to go in the opposite direction that we're headed! Cap and trade and all these other methods of slow national suicide such as high corporate taxes need to be scrapped. Anthropogenic global warming is based on fraud, and high taxes keep businesses overseas.

All this "climate change" hysteria isn't scientific, its political, and all the Democratic scaremongering is effectively driving industry offshore.

The polar bears are doing great, its our economy thats endangered.
