Why are 30,000 more troops being sent to Afghanistan when there are only about 100 Al Queda members reported there?

Because there's a lot of other sorts in Afghanistan who like you just as little as Al Queda do?

I was going to post this on the political cartoons thread but I thought it fit better here.

I'm listening to the radio and they played a sound bite of Napolitano saying that the system worked flawlessly.
Then another soundbite; "The system failed miserably!"
Which is it?
And the radio host said that Napolitano could be possably a candidate for the supreme court should a vacancy occur. She doesn't know what the hell she's talking about!
Man, we're in trouble!
Has anyone in here read the book "The Peter Principle?"
I read it I think back in the 70's, and is it ever true! Why does this keep happening in government?
I think the only logical conclusion any intelligent person can reach is that we're simply getting the wrong type of people in government.
Or could it be that government "attracts" these kind of people?
They write "rules and regulations" that do nothing but inconvienience people and won't profile people!
If there was ever a guy who profiling would have caught it was that Nigerian. He flew from Amsterdam, no luggage, one-way ticket, paid cash, had business cards on his person that said "Soldier of Allah" and a bunch of other things!
What the hell is it that causes people with a lot of "degrees" to become *fucking stupid?* Common sense escapes them. And to want to bring that stupidity with them into government?
I think the main problem with "degrees" is that people are *way too young* when they get them! They have no experience, no *common sense*, how much common sense or life experience is someone between the ages of 20-30 going to bring to the table?
And look at Napolitano, she's a lawyer and a former governor, how does that qualify her or *anyone* to be head of homeland security?
I mean wouldn't you want someone with a military or police or CIA background in a position like that and not a "political appointee?"
If I needed an accountant I wouldn't hire an electrician to do my books.
As I've said before, lawyers just aren't good managers. That's not what they were trained to do.
And the talk show host just said Obama, (another lawyer) said he wants to go after al qeada and bring them to "trial."
What, a hundred thousand al qeada savages sworn publically that they intend to kill us and he's interested in protecting their "rights" in trials?
Do we even have enough judges, lawyers, courtrooms to handle all that? Everyone in the U.S. would have been on an "al qeada jury" if that happens.
For your next read get "The Peter Principle". It's so true it's scary.

Incompetence isn't limited to people with degrees, sadly. Just look at McCain's mate who wasn't even a competent plumber.
I think it's more that pursuing a government career involves a lot of money, and lawyers can earn a fair bit even if they aren't working full time.

Obama's speechwriter is getting a bit hackneyed:

"We will not rest until blah blah blah" .... if he doesn't rest until all the things are solved that he says he won't rest for, he's going to be more worn out than Tiger Woods after a receiving a gift certificate for a year of free food at Hooters.

"Nobody disputes that blah blah blah"....maybe if you actually said something, someone would dispute it.

"Let me be absolutely clear blah blah blah"....like "To tell you the truth blah blah blah" signals a lie is coming, this is a sure sign that you wont understand a fucking word he says, or that he doesnt really mean what he's going to say.

Oh, and in case you missed ABC news, two of the 4 plotters of the attack were graduates of...............

Gitmo

(but of course, they were innocent and picked up off the street illegally)

And all his appologising evidently isn't working on al qeada.
I never liked Bush but at least you knew that al qeada hated him as he had no respect for those savages.
And Obama has been in office for almost a year and *now* he wants to bomb Yemen? Jeese, why don't we just tell them when the bombers are comming?
It's easy to see that al qeada will be the first to use nuclear weapons and not us.
I want a president who not only "offends" al qeada but wants every single individual one of them *dead*, Yesterday! I want a president who makes jokes to the press about al qeada eating pork rinds and putting them into giant frying pans to cook in lard.
If you wouldn't use nuclear weapons on our enemies you don't belong in the White House.

Isn't that kind of style (of non-pc leadership) synonymous with the Iranian leader?

I say I think I have found your next president!

Then you live in the wrong country, mate. Move to France: that's precisely the kind of bullshit their president indulges in. La classe!

And there, in a nutshell, is the extent of your grasp of international relations. You'd seem so much smarter if you kept your gob shut, pop [:D] .

with all the fucked up links you post, surely you can post one for that claim, hunk.

I haven't seen any results published that directly link THz radiation to cancer, but that or worse is not so far-fetched.

How Terahertz Waves Tear Apart DNA

A new model of the way the THz waves interact with DNA explains how the damage is done and why evidence has been so hard to gather... although the forces generated are tiny, resonant effects allow THz waves to unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication. That's a jaw dropping conclusion.

I think you'll find the link acceptable. [:D]

K.

Looks like it'll need some more research to determine the power levels, frequencies, etc. that may be a problem: "Experimental data strongly suggest that THz-radiation can aff ect biological function, but only under specifi c conditions, viz. high power, or/and extended exposure, or/and speci fic THz frequency."

And they are using mathematical models to reach their conclusions, not measuring sample DNA; early in the paper it's stated that undesired effects were observed at THz frequencies, but high power levels were used.

For now, it'll take a bunch more research to see what the effects would be for low power, short duration exposures.

BTW, we've got a snowball's chance of detecting conformal explosives unless we 1) all walk through a "puffer", 2) get imaged, or 3) are swabbed down like they do for supplemental inspection.

LadyEllen -> RE: The Airline Security System Works; It Really Does! (12/28/2009 7:08:26 PM)

Well, for the comfort of all you Americans that fly to and from the UK, I'd like you to know that all the efforts of Homeland Security, MI5, MI6, the CIA, FBI and anyone else you might be relying on to protect you, and all and any of those daft security checks you pass through and procedures youre obliged to follow, are all for nothing.

Because the guys and gals working to sort and check baggage are often supplied by temping agencies to the airports, provided with little or no training and subject to background checks that are purely for show. Guess who is most attracted to this sort of work and who put off, by the long hours of repetitive tasks at low pay? And when illegal immigrants from all sorts of exotic and diverse backgrounds can find their way by the same methods and systems into jobs cleaning at the UK Home Office and it takes months to discover it, you can rest assured that air-side security is bang up to scratch too.

Security has not been improved one iota since Lockerbie, despite all the rules and regulations imposed since and escalated enormously in the last few years. Anyone with a reasonable level of intelligence and a little funding can get round whatever measures are put in place, especially if they are motivated to do so. And if we insist on low cost air travel that means our baggage is sorted by underpaid immigrants who may well be so motivated, we're just kidding ourselves that any rule will have much effect.

AnimusRex -> RE: The Airline Security System Works; It Really Does! (12/28/2009 7:35:08 PM)

It gets worse- I read where a Saudi was found to have inserted explosive material in his rectum; guess where these underpaid temps will want to check next?

Nevermind that Nate Silver at 538.com calculated you have about a 1 in 10 million chance of being involved in a terrorist attack; we absolutely must, MUST run in circles tearing our hair out and wetting our pants.

And bomb somebody. We always must bomb somebody.

So, is that our current criteria for boots on the ground, for disrupting a society, for creating refuges, for property destruction and death? Because there are some who dislike us. Fucking amazing! Where will that end? Would you then use that criteria and consider France a likely candidate? Sure as hell a lot of Frenchmen who dislike us.

WTF?

A hundred thousand savages? Words loaded with emotion, Popeye. War slogans. What is the basis for that number? Our own Military admitted there were only 100 Al Q in Afghanistan.

It is all a big bureaucratic joke, LE. Money wasted on ill conceived concepts. The traveler is punished.

Did he graduate kindergarten? Everybody in the US was involved in a terrorist attack eight years ago.
