Interesting mind set, dear LadyPact quote:
ORIGINAL: LadyPact I will never come on these boards professing to speak for 'the community'. I think anyone that does so believes themselves too self important. I couldn't care less about what someone writes on the internet. It will never surpass meeting someone in person in saying hello. In My opinion, the old way of smiling when you meet someone and shaking their hand is still the best way, even though I've never made a dime from it. Your motivations may vary. You clearly have some kind of preoccupation about the concept of 'community', but that's okay, not my problem. I read your statement like saying 'I move rocks in my local river bend and that has more (personal) influence than discussing on the internet how rivers and their water quality could be managed.' Do you seriously believe that your "impact" in matters of BDSM is limited to the hands you shake in your personal life? I could understand how a newbie domina with great reading and writing skills (comparable to those of LadyPact) could perhaps remain blissfully unaware of her or even any community impact for maybe the first year or so. So busy selecting and dating male subs and all, but people given enough time and intelligence to simply look around a bit more do see the broader picture. I am Flemish, living on the border of French and Dutch culture and the impact of that "environment" (more "en vogue" perhaps than the semantic field of "community"?) is blatantly obvious and signifant. a) French culture: hardly any open and free web community sites (with personal ads), it's mostly pretty closed up and commercial. Personal ads are mostly commercial and male sub ads rarely deviate from the stereotype presentations. b) Flemish culture: several free and gratis web sites but rather limited in functionality and message boards do not really thrive. Personal ad texts published on Flemish sites are similarly a bit limited and not very flamboyant. c) Dutch culture: well-developed websites with great functionality for personal ads. The personal presentations on such sites are clearly pleasant and even flamboyant. d) English-speaking cultures: several well-developed websites with great functionality for personal ads. It could be interesting to document how the quality of personal ads of English male subs compares to Dutch counter parts, but the Flemish can simply check north and south and see precisely that laid out before them, right in front of their eyes. I can choose where to make my internet postings, but thats's not likely going to be in French environments as long as their community dynamic is so locked up. Similarly, I'd prefer not to post in a Flemish web site suffering from a closed up policy because there my input is clearly lost on a newbie on the outside still too scared to register into a BDSM website. So clearly, the question of what evolutions affect you by shaping and unlocking your community / environment is very pertinent. It even affects people with a sole interest in shaking hands locally... Your personal life important? Of course, but that's just not on topic here.
