Best guess, it has something to do with conquest. When a man conquers another man, it is not uncommon for severe humiliation to follow as a form of dominance. I would guess the response isn't going to be all that different with regard to women. In my case, it certainly has some relation to that, but as with anything you do as a part of a sexual activity, an association will be formed, which makes it a turn-on in its own right.

I'm sure this varies for all, but here's at least one crack at answering your question...

The basic premise (and attraction) of the Power Dynamic is where one is dominant/in control, where the other is submissive/not in control.  The humilation thing (which is frequently coupled with degradation, objectification, etc.) can simply add another layer/level to that.  It affords the participants not just a CHOICE to dominate or submit, but in a way (mentally/emotionally) FORCES the s-types submission to the D-type.  A mental mind-fuck, if you will.  It adds that additional layer/level... a kind of "how LOW can you go" type of thing, both mentally and emotionally.  For those who enjoy this type of scenario, it's a mental/emotional CRUSHING (so to speak)... increase the level of dominance and submission.... and increasing one's control over the other.

In a way, it's akin to the use of restraints.  I mean really... one could argue there is no point in using cuffs and rope if the other has already consent to submission... but the restraints add yet another layer/level.  The same is true for those that enjoy the humiliation, degradation, objectification elements of the Power Dynamic.  Just one more layer/level to play with... mentally and emotionally.  A way of feeling like everything and nothing... at the SAME time.

For others, it goes deeper than this... for example, for those that may have self-esteem/worth issues, it works to allow them to revel in that low self-esteem/worth feelings... or even return to that mental/emotional "place" as a round-about way of self-healing; much in the same way those who have rape fantasies often wish to return to THAT mental/emotional "place" in order to gain control of a scenario where they had no control.  A form of self-help/healing, so to speak.

Anyway, hopefully the above provides some explanations to hang your hat on... I'm sure there are others.

i don't think we can heal as there is nothing wrong, we're just different, some of us will have had earlier issues added to the mix. but we mostly would have been this way regardless

human psychology being not on a fixed point, some are going to be on the down side of the bell curve , some on one side, some on the other

we are made of many different character traits, we just have some traits that cause us to express our sexuality out side the norm

it had to happen to some and we're it

maybe our sexuality icomes from a more primitive level than the norm, primitive and primal, watch cats, it's more like rape than love, very primal

i know i feel primal at that time and i've had subs that stopped thinking and became sensation receptors, it was just feeling

For me it's because anyone can make a bed, suck a cock, or wear a collar. When we're in a humiliation scene I have to dig down deep and submit from a place where my mind isn't allowed to go. I have to do rather than think. It's not easy but the accomplishment gets me off.
