Status: offline 		I'm sick and tired of rich people saying they pay too many taxes when the truth is quite the opposite. Can you believe 1% of the population owns the rest of us 95% combined. That's ridiculous.

Always severely divided in one way or another, the U.S. has become two nations --one of the very,very rich elite on the one end and the rest of us on the other. The rich have literally waged war upon the poor since the nation's founding. The so-called 'Robber Baron Era' was notable for preceding and causing the Great Depression.

Income and wealth disparities are even worse now! As a direct result of Reagan/Bush tax cuts benefiting only the upper classes just ONE PERCENT of the U.S. population owns more than 95 percent of everyone else combined. Poverty is higher among every minority group. A 'ruling elite' of just one percent is primarily White Anglo Saxon Protestant.

Status: offline 		Actually this is a change, not the rich getting a little richer but in one generation in the US the numbers have changed from the top 1% owning 50% to 90%.

Status: offline 		Brain, I do agree that the disparity between rich and poor has widened over the past few decades, but that's based more on gut feel than anything else.  The article you quoted gives no reference for the 1%/95% claim, so I consider that suspect.  Also note that the chart comparing median wage to GDP stops in 2007, before the GDP began to nosedive.

The chart is misleading for a second reason.  The implication is that the widening disparity between GDP growth and wage growth is that the wage slaves have stagnated income while the elite don't, that the median reflects the millions of wage slaves while the relatively few wealthy are statistical outliers.  But there's also a possibility that people's incomes are being composed increasingly of capital gains, which would not be reported as simple wages.

Also, note that while I agree with you that income disparity is unhealthy, not everyone is onboard with that.  One of the conservatives' arguments is that the engine for the economy is business growth, and that the prospect of making money is the driver for entrepreneurs starting and expanding companies, and thus expanding the economy.

The link clearly shows 1% owns 37% of the wealth, top 10% owns 72%.
Interesting is the first graph showing that the median wage last 10 years has been steady or declined.
We could extend it 30 years back and the result would be the same. We can not blame GOP alone; neither Democrat president (W. Clinton) nor Democrat led Congresses have done nothing to give some boost to lower classes. Corporate executive compensation increased 4 times during Clinton years (there is some decline after that).

/one does have to be careful about "soak the rich" modes.  because less then 250k 1/2 per Obama IS rich.  glunk.   and then what the meaning of is IS.

Well Rotchilds own half of the world,with the help of hungarian Jew  Soros,then you have the Rockeffelers,,J., Morgans, Bushes Henry Kissinger,Zbignev Brezinski,etc.the "Federal reserve",with its criminal mob,called the irs  in puerto rico(all money collected go directly to the bankers to pay the "debt',nothing back to benefits the people,so you "should" be realy proud to pay the illegal taxes and called people who fight for freedom  "tax cheats") You have also several noble organization-the Bohemian Grove,Bilderbergers,council on foreing relantionship,the triangular comision,etc.Those are very concern about population grove,so system of population controll is in place,with the new world administrator,husein obama ,they have greatest chance to establish  new world order and is advancing dramaticaly,just to give the diplomatic immunity to shady criminal european interpol,should be great alarm to the SHEEPLE. The way it works:THEY create problem,then is reaction,the way THEY expect,like yes to patriots act,yes to war,etc and then is the mentioned solution  PROBLEM,REACTION SOLUTION,less,less freedom,total slavery,cashless society,the monarchy and the slaves,maxsist utopia. A friend of mine made a boatload of money in the 60's and 70's and lived like a pauper until he could buy a full section of land in an obscure county in northern California.  About 30% of the land is vertical and part of the reason he got a good deal but he has the water and mineral rights.  He harnessed the natural springs on the vertical land, used ever decreasing diameter pipe to create water pressure and built his own hydro-electrical plant that generates enough electricity that the power company is forced to purchase his excess.  He makes enough money on his electricity to pay for everything he cannot grow on his land as well as pay his property tax.  That's all he pays to any government is property tax.  He has no "job" and pays no income tax to the state or federal governments.  As self-employed farmer/rancher his expenses-v-income insures he owes no other tax.   640 acres insures his children will have land to build upon when and if they choose.

In the United States, we still do have the freedom to not become slaves.  But it takes some personal sacrifice.

What is important?  Money or happiness?  Our constitution does not guarantee health, wealth, or happiness.

Wealth is a terrible burden. Having a lot of money is a sure path to misery and suffering.

Status: offline 		I haven't studied the numbers but even if it is 70 or 60% it's still high. Another thing is I know the minimum wage has not gone up much at all for many years and when it did Republicans demanded tax cuts to allow a increase in the minimum wage.
