Whiplashsmile4 -> Over internalization? (12/29/2009 10:50:28 PM)

Over internalization to the point it becomes inconsiderate or thoughtless of others yet, the person doing it does not see it as such? Worse yet, it's not apparent that it's due to over internalization right away.

Interested in what others have to say from both sides of two coins here. The D/s coin and those that over internalize and those that have learned to spot and deal with it.

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: Over internalization? (12/30/2009 4:43:07 AM)

Resistance is futile....you will all be assimilated.... type of internalization?

Or...more along the lines of internalization as results in a mental disorder?

I'm thinking maybe the ^former^?  Just a guess...

In their first introduction to the Lifestyle, little information is forthcoming about the BDSM-Borg or their origins and intents. In alien encounters, they exhibit no desire for negotiation or reason, only to assimilate. Exhibiting a rapid adaptability to any situation or perceived threat, with encounters characterized by the matter-of-fact imperative "Resistance is futile", the BDSM-Borg develop into one of the greatest threats to The Community and the Lifestyle....

On CM, attempts to resist the BDSM-Borg become one of the central themes, with many examples of successful resistance to the collective, both from existing or former drones, and assimilation targets. It is also demonstrated that it is possible to survive assimilation , and that drones can escape the collective, and become individuals, or exist collectively without forced assimilation of others.

What do you mean when you say "over internalization"?  Please define this term.  Ive never heard it before nor could I find it in the dictionary (regular of urban) or on google.

I get exactly what you are saying.
I will continue to resist!  There are many around here that are able to enjoy being here, remain individuals and avoid assimilation.
I will admit the numbers are small, but they are growing.
I have already talked to much, I am not allowed to say any more.
....looking around, especially behind my back, now ready to run.....
We all have secret resistance decoder rings, and a secret handshake.

My silliness set aside for a moment, I think this is what the OP was referring to.  Unless I'm way off base?  I can see how excessive internalization, whether from the definition above, or one taken from the DSM-IV, can cause problems. You get a sense, from certain individuals, that internalization might be used as a way to camouflage themselves.  Sounds a bit paranoid, even judgemental, but I do find myself following different posters around and wondering...what makes them tick?  Are they as curious (odd) as they seem, or simply curious (inquisitive).  Is there some purpose behind their blatant attempts to present themselves as knowledgeable leaders?  Is the knowledge there, but hidden behind ineffectual communication skills?  Am I over internalizing motives myself, and putting too much thought into what is very likely random acts of bored stupidity?

Ok, that is about as serious as I can get...so I'm back to my previous theory.  They are out there.  They want to assimilate us!  Do not buy into the propoganda that resistence is futile...If you can hear my voice, You ARE the Resistance! WinD

Ooo, I'd forgotten about that website!  This form of internalization didn't occur to me!  Should have, wasn't the topic a massively long fubarfest of posting once upon a time?

There is no question here, just several confusing sentence fragments. Can you try again, in short sentences containing a subject, verb, and object, to explain what you are asking?

sunshinemiss -> RE: Over internalization? (12/30/2009 10:15:21 AM)

Drifa, you are so fussy!

NihilusZero -> RE: Over internalization? (12/30/2009 10:56:58 AM)

A bit confused by the terminology intended as well, but it would seem to me that over-internalization is the antithesis of transparency in a relationship.

I think that any internalization is inconsiderate.  And, within the context of a D/s relationship, can be extremely harmful to all parties involved.  The definition of internalization suggests that through this process, the person is assuming an identity that is not their own; s/he is attempting to adopt the value structures of another person without truly believing it him/herself.  This can lead to cognitive dissonance (having two conflicting beliefs/thoughts/potential courses of action) in a person.  It is damaging in a relationship (specifically D/s), and will appear when the D-type may request or demand that the s-type do something. Since the s-type has internalized the D-type's view on D/s, s/he is more likely to do what s/he believes the D-type wants, even though the "true" part of him/her is screaming "no."  In doing what the D wants, the s may feel guilty or distraught; s/he hasn't submitted because it is in his/her nature to do so - rather, s/he submitted because s/he wants to believe that s/he possesses the nature to submit.

Thus...

but it would seem to me that over-internalization is the antithesis of transparency in a relationship.

...is very true.
