Exactly. It's a romance novel on the screen. It's a chick flick.

Edited to add: Do guys really think there are no action, gunfights and swordfights in romance novels?

If simply introducing a relationship element into a action/comedy movie makes it a chick-flick, then what do we call stuff like Shawdowlands or Pretty Woman?

Damn! In my romance novels there are knives... and whips, and cages and rope. Lots and lots of rope!

I know. Oooo and in the Western ones there are always several great gunfight scenes. It's always fun when the hero haIcks and slashes and shoots his way to his lady, who he is going to throw over his shoulder. And even better when she is fighting too. Actually one of my favorite parts was when the heroine dived under the swords of her lover and her cousin to keep them from killing each other. [:)]

Ahh, seiges, imprisonments, torture and death... always part of a good romance novel.

Damn, I must be reading the wrong romance novels, the ones I've taken a look at made me want to puke with the long flowery prose.

Ah see for me it's when the prisonner, after months in captivity, finally is worn down by his cruel sadistic captor and actually falls in love with her. Gosh I love a happy ending!

It's more than the relationship element. Romancing the Stone is a romance novel translated into a movie. It's supposed to be. That makes it a chick flick to me. And, while I haven't watched it, from all accounts from my female friends, Pretty Woman counts as a chick flick.

Who says that chick flicks have to be sappy, crying movies or romantic comedies?

I've got a stash if you want me to send you some titles... [:D]

LOL - just not my thing at all. I emphasize too much with the person in captivity and tend to think about all their friends and family who are worried about them. The closest I get to that is when the woman is a prisoner of war or the like who manages to crack the stoney and reserved man who is holding her hostage.

No one!

It just makes "chick flick" as not a very specific descriptor. It's not like I'm gonna stop watching my romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile copies, though. [8D][:D]

Nothing wrong with Romance novels.

I wouldn't expect you to! That would be silly. I love both of those movies, to the point where I think my DVDs will wear out... [:)]

Might I point out that, even though you and I are on opposite sides of the slash, in both our romance novels, it is the woman who is doing the "cracking" and changing the man's mind. ;-)

...

shut up. I'm a good little subbie... I am....

(Athough usually it's not something she's intending to do... and there was a really hot one - one of my favs actually - where the guy realized he'd gotten the girl pregnant (long story) so he tricked her into marrying him. Then she was kidnapped by a crazy religious dude who later tried to kill her and her husband several times... )

Since ya asked so nicely...

zeph's full, rounded bosom rippled as the waves of passionate purple nausea coursed through her.  Deep moans escaped her full, thick lips as her lovely face contorted and she began to delicately hurl.

AquaticSub -> RE: bdsmgroupandassociatesoftexas (1/6/2010 6:09:42 PM)

I feel like I should be chanting "I'm a pretty subbie, I'm a pretty subbie" now. [:D]

thornhappy -> RE: bdsmgroupandassociatesoftexas (1/6/2010 6:11:16 PM)

Is it really possible to delicately hurl?

LOL I've never heard of Shadowlands, but I know what I call Pretty Woman: a chick flick.

I've never seen the movie y'all are discussing but I'd say the general plot of a chick flick is "Independent girl meets tough and/or emotionally distant guy. Their personalities clash which creates sexual tension though they are disinclined to admit it, then Something Happens (generally around half hour from the ending) and they realize they want to spend the rest of their lives together."

That doesn't mean guys can't enjoy chick flicks, and they probably watch them for different reasons than girls watch them, but that's what a chick flick is to me.

Also there's usually a second guy there to play either the "friend who likes the girl" or the "hot guy the girl thinks she loves but he's really an arse" who contrasts with the hero.

ETA: If you want to know what a 'chick flick' is, rent the movie "Blue Crush" - when it gets to the end and your brain instinctively starts thinking "Hey wait, you mean it was just a fling between them? That's not right!" you'll realize how programmed you are by chick flicks.

DarkSteven -> RE: bdsmgroupandassociatesoftexas (1/6/2010 6:21:04 PM)

You want us men to appreciate a chick flick?  Have the women wear less damn clothing.

That sounds like Romancing the Stone to me. [:D]

And McClintock for that matter, though suspect men all over the world will kill me for that.

Level -> RE: bdsmgroupandassociatesoftexas (1/6/2010 6:26:35 PM)

I tend to think of a movie as a "chick flick" if it focuses on the woman lead.

Pretty Woman: chick flick

Romancing the Stone: adventure movie that contains romance

He realises he was wrong and usually steals a car/horse/jet ski to go beg for her to take him back. Gosh I love when men beg... ;-)

Or he realizes he was right, but will never get her to admit it, and swallows his pride so he can still get some nunu. [8D]
