I often run into profiles which refer to outside email addresses. Being internet-savvy I'm able in the course of the dialogue to tell if the person on the other end sits say in Nigeria, not in USA or UK or wherever.

When I subsequently report the collarme profile, nothing happens. I assume this is because the system is automatied and most other users on here do not have the skill / motivation to figure out if the other person lies about their location / intention.

Can anything be done?

For example the collarme profile ********* refers to an email address which is operated from a user in Nigeria.

Isn't it safe to assume that anyone in Nigeria is a scammer?

Thoughts and opinions are welcome.

Jack

Note by Alpha: edited and put back because the OP violated TOS but has stated that somehow this thread is different from the other scammer threads and should be discussed, that different points are being made.

I heartily pity you for what is likely about to happen to this thread.
If you do a search, you will find that this is the 5th or 6th thread started on this subject in the past week.

Friend speaks my mind...

Seriously, what is with the deluge of scammer threads lately? If the scammers are this damn active that we need one a day, why the hell hasn't anyone tried to scam me in all my years on the site? What am I, chopped liver?

I haven't been posting much the last few months, but since I ramped it up again the last few days, the usual African scammers have come back....

I don't bother about them.... As soon as I see that off-site email address, they get the same treatment as form letters - *delete*!

Really, it's not so hard to discern between sincere correspondence and time-wasters; takes but a second to nuke the latter....

Focus.

I'd say its probably safest to assume anyone contacting you on the other side for the first time is a scammer, until proven otherwise. But then I'm cynical like that.

Yes.

Step 1: Press 'Block'.
Step 2: Press 'Delete'.
Step 3: Move on with your life, and make it fun, and fulfilling so that interacting with scammers is waaaay down on the list of important things that happened during your day.

Run!!!! Run as fast as you can. Delete your profile, turn off your computer, unplug it from the wall. Toss it in the river!!!!!

The spammers have now invaded it and there is nothing to do but destroy it and them! Never get near an internet connection again........otherwise your tits will shrivel, your dick will explode (and not in a good way), your brain will atrophy, your bank account will follow your tits, and you will spend the rest of your life wandering the streets of some large city, whimpering and moaning incoherently.

As i am strong on ethics and integrity, both giving and expecting and as such scammers give me a rash and are one of my few pet peeves. Thankfully most are quite obvious and easy to determine.

As a male submissive i found in past they were more passive and tended to lie in wait and seek contact from others. Now they are becoming more assertive and initiating contact. It is becoming more prevelant on CM and whereas in past i would receive a few per year the past two weeks i have been with four in my junk mail. I can only image at the the volume that is received by Dommes!

The first three i ignored but the fourth in seeking money i decided to respond to...

Are you crazy... or perhaps you think i am crazy. In any case i am not on collarme to partake of scams such as yours. I am submissive yes but i am not stupid... and certainly not foolish or stupid enough to get sucked in to such BS as this. Karma will deal with the likes of you at a later date... it always does. I have no respect for scammers, scammers are losers and low lifes sucking up the goodness and positive energies of other persons. Kindly do not waste my time again.

Thank you

I realize such response solves little other than having allowed for me to vent, but also perhaps naively hopeful if i am on a list it results in my being removed.

Sadly it seems there is no way to rid of scammers as blocking and denial makes so they reappear with a different profile. What bothers me is the lingering effect they have on others and how it changes us all.. makes us less trusting, more doubtful, more apprehensive. In small measure these aspects are perhaps good but in large measure i believe not.

The "deluge" is because ONE (or a very small number) of scammers has bought a "system" which takes advantage of our system. It's not lots of spammers sending spam; it's a couple of spammers sending lots of spam (disguising the source so that it "looks" like it's from lots of others).

Typically when they shut down the spammers, the deluge abates tremendously, momentarily, until the next spamscammer comes to town.

Sigh.

PS: What I don't get is how they make money with all that since that's what they're after, I'd assume.

where there is the internet, there will also be scammers.

Deal with it by ignoring, deleting, or tossing your computer into the river. *elbows LaT*

Your problem is that you are female.  The scammers target the males, and the goal is to drive them to a horny frenzy where they shell out money to get a lovely slavegirl from Nigeria to come over and do their every bidding.

If there was a way to drive women to the point of insane horny stupidity quickly and easily online, they'd do it.

You can always use a little common sense and if someone online asks for money, you say no. Isn't personal responsibility a wonderful thing?

Yea, that's right, every last one of them down to the pets. And it's also safe to assume that anyone from Gatwick is an easy mark.

Anyone.... http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6088156  ???  Remember what happens when you assume.  While it's doubtful many legitimate Nigerian writers are using CollarMe as a source of material for their next novel...that much I'll give you.

There was an interesting interview I heard not too long ago on NPR about young people in Nigeria and the rise of internet scamming that originates from that country.  They like to specificlly target these types of sites...ones where people seem to be searching for love, sex and anything in between.  There was a young man being interviewed and when asked why he chose to do this sort of thing, he replied it was because people fall for it.

Report...block...delete...get on with your life and don't forget to engage good old-fashioned common sense before starting up your computer.  Life really is too short to sit and worry about this stuff.

I am pretty sure that most here are perfectly capable of spotting the sort of profile you are talking about. They just choose not to whinge and whine about them.

It is a simple case of block and delete as others have said. Funny seems to work ok for us.

I think the OP meant that heandshe could trace the message to the original ISP.  And old advice is good advice, report, block, delete.

Many people suggest to just report, block, delete.

That's essentially giving up on the problem. To throw up your hands and say "nothing can be done!".

As a web professional, I must reply that indeed much can be done, by people who have the will.

The technology exists to determine ad-hoc the location of the person, where they are logged in from. Just google for GEOIP for example. Community websites like couchsurfing.com for example display the location from where the user was last logged in. This could of course be downgraded to say country, or county, in order to accomodate people's desire for privacy. Some adult sites like alt.com offer a verification service. Couchsurfing for example sends you a postcard with a password.

Of course, you enter then some sort of technology race against the scammers, because some will start using proxy servers. But a web server can figure this out, it's all about the will to improve matters. And it doesn't have to be expensive either.

Also, as community website volunteers could be used to bring in a human element into community self-policing, which is effectively what "report block delete" is. Although very limited, as you cant provide outside evidence against a scammer.

Additional functionality like rating other users and specifically differentiate between real-life and online relationships between those rating can help to build a network of trust others can then rely upon.

What it takes is the will to bring about improvements. What I admire about collarme is the brand and market presence. This is why I am here. It's not a perfect system though, but the scope for improvements is by far not exhausted and this is what should be brought up again and again until improvements have been effected.

That is my opinion anyway.

Jack

I guess most of us just don't care that much, block and delete is a solution because the more people do that, the greater the chance the scammer doesn't get any reward and stops.

By all means buy that software, just don't be surprised if few do so.
