Like most animals, most horses will grow a thick winter coat if they are in good health and properly acclimated. I do not believe in keeping my horses locked up, so to blanket them would put them at greater risk for getting tangled, hurt.
So, I make sure my horses are in top health. I add some weight to them in the fall. I make sure they are parasite free so that they get all the benefit from their feed. I feed extra grain and add a protein supplement so that the stress of the weather doesn't cause them to lose weight. And most importantly, I make sure they drink plenty of water.
They are doing great. They were running laps, rearing and bucking for joy this morning at 5:30am.......hollering at me demanding their breakfast.
