we are saying the same thing I believe just in a different way...I say different configuration of the brain you say not a mental illness... this means the same to me.

Realizing this fact will change society...we are saying the same thing again I agree.

Indeed which is what I said earlier.

I think you give the average person any way too much credit...teenage boys will still beat up homosexual boys in the school yard 50 years from now...long after all states have same sex marriage laws. Social changes or not

There have been observations that animals will reject others in their herd, pride, pod, group, flock, etc who are obviously different, so it may be in our core to be uneasy about people who do not fit the majority.  People can feel a natural revulsion to horrible disfigurements.  We know that logically we should not treat people badly just because they are disfigured but there is still that gut reaction.

Even though human beings have evolved over the past few million years, we are still governed by baser animal instincts. People fear what they do not understand and instinctively, the majority of society does not understand us who are either gay or lesbian.

So you agree homosexuals have a different brain configuration?

With all the problems our country is facing, I find it ludicrous that people are against same sex marriage. I never understood how other's choices affect someone else, especially something like this.

What kind of time does someone have to go around and campaign against something? I can see campaigning for it, but those against it, should really shut the fuck up.

I have gay friends and this really pisses me off. I mean what is there to be afraid of with gay marriage??? Do they think it is catching?

Edited to ask: What does brain chemistry have to do with the question of gay marriage? Why would you even ask such a thing? What does it matter WHY someone is gay? Why are you straight?

Carmeldelight -> RE: Why are people afraid of same-sex marriage? (1/9/2010 8:10:19 AM)

People are not affair of same sex marriage; it is something that is not the will of the Lord!!! God did not make Adam and Steve but Adam and Eve!!!

thornhappy -> RE: Why are people afraid of same-sex marriage? (1/9/2010 8:11:24 AM)

Some folks believe it weakens traditional marriage, which I think is a hoot.  Heterosexuals are doing a fine job of weakening marriage, all by themselves!

I agree with you but it is the way it is...the why is still an opinion but soon it will be understood on a scientific level and reasonable people at least will understand...but never all.

It was natural that women worked in the kitchen, they needed protecting, it was natural that white people were in charge of black people etc etc. Social change changes attitudes slowly. And to be fair I don't think that social progression happens in the states alone.

Edit to add no I dont, I was agreeing that we were using a different method to get to the same meaning

ETA part two, I think I am derailing this topic a little too much with an argument that won't be settled so I shall stop now.

Greetings

I honestly can say I do not understand why pepole fear same sex marriage. I mean seriously if gay pepole marry that do not make marriage between man and woman any less worth. Marriage should be a joining between two or more pepole who love one another, the exact form of that love should not matter nor the sex of the parties involved.

I wish you well

I am a religious person as well...but I understand the Bible was written by men...trying to understand the meaning of the words God was putting in their minds. I believe they failed on occasion to interrupt correctly...that simple. If I die and face my lord I believe he will laugh when I tell him my worries of supporting homosexuality…I’ll bet he will say son I put them there just as I put you.

Plenty of married men go to the gay park and have sex with other men.

Seems - like it would be less problems is more settled with one person then banging every one they see.

But explain that further?  It's not the will of the Lord for anyone to eat (let alone even touch) pork.  It's not the will of the Lord for people to eat shellfish.  It is not the will of the Lord to read your horoscope.  It's not the will of the Lord for people to eat rare steak of wear a goatee.  That is... if you identify with the Jewish and Christian bible (Old Testament) And I say it's cool if any religion wants to forbid such marriages in their church or temple or coven or whatever.  Separation of church and state coupled with anti-discrimination laws should allow such civil marriages.

I think now many people believe a homosexual is a deviant... that they chose to be gay...I believe science is closing in on what part of the brain makes you a man… woman...bisexual...or gay. When reasonable people believe this to be true and these people are not deviants but normal then they will think differently of them.

i personally feel its beyond ridiculous that two homosexuals, in this day and age can't have a civil union. i mean this is America for crying out loud!  If two people want to do that, they should be able to, AND their partner get all the benefits as if they were a spouse. Wheres the freedom for our homosexual citizens? This is LONG over due (in my humble opinion)

It was brought up in another thread.  I'd like some additional information and discussion.

My opinion is that as a religious ceremony any religion can ban it as whatever fits their particular dogma.

My opinion is that as a civil ceremony, marriage should be as free from discrimination as anything else.  There are laws against discrimination in hiring practices, housing, eligibility for social services and the like.  Any state that bans same-sex marriage is breaking its own discrimination laws.  In other words, the ban itself could be considered a hate crime.

For those who site the bible, how many follow all the laws laid out in Leviticus or do they honestly believe God was only joking about not eating lobster?  Are you actually prepared to make male homosexuality a capitol crime punishable by death as indicated in Leviticus 20:13?  Can anyone site a bible verse that says anything about Lesbian relationships?

However you look at this issue, it all goes down to one thing: the nuclear family as society basic building block. Everything is made to protect that, be it legally, religiously or economically. Now, science and technology are challenging this. Our society is evolving, and, in my opinion, many fear that it will be drastically changed if marriage as an institution evolves. In a way, the same thing has already happened with divorce, being generally perceived as a failure, then a shameful act, then a sad fact of life, and finally part of "normal" life.

As far as I am concerned, a legally recognized union exists mainly to protect the children that may come from it. So, as long as same sex couples are not denied the opportunity to adopt and/or may benefit from the same fecundity procedures on equivalent terms than heterosexual couples, homosexual couples should be legally recognized.

Just my two cents.

Cheers,

B

good answer....  Its functionally correct.  Its based in the roots of religion which is the foundation for law.

What people do in private is solely up to them and in public takes on a different twist.

Everyone seems to want not only public recognition but also public approval.

Kids beating each other up can be a crime in any case, regardless.

I pointed out before and no one has really addressed it at its core but why the public approval?  Who cares if the public approves when there are so many ways around it?

Jesus did not have a traditional wedding and marriage.

See?

The laws in this and many other countries originate from england which went through a period of heavy ecclesiastical influence.

So while the state cannot establish a religion if it recognizes the law of the land it recognizes by default the judeo-christian foundations.
