If you follow the game, you had to know this was coming.

GOP Chief:  Reid should step down

A new book about the 2008 campaign is quoting Senator Harry Reid as saying of then candidate Obama, "no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

Anybody remember Senator Trent Lott being forced from his leadership position over a statement that wasn't nearly as directly racist? 

Can we say "double standard?"

My first guess is somewhere between slim and none, Level.   I'm just very cynical about how accusations of racism can be such an effective weapon when used against someone liberals want driven from office, but how racism is quickly forgiven and forgotten when it comes from their own midst.

But far more reaching in its implications, apparently lamenting that Dixiecrats and their clearly racist policies had not come to power.

Perhaps not what he meant. Who knows. But far more serious.

In any event, attacking the majority leader is a no-brainer. Daschle was relentlessly targeted by Rush.

Let's also not forget that it's Bush who had Lott step aside--so that his good, inexperienced friend could step in instead.

I too have noticed Obama's speech can change when needed. So can mine.

Non-issue.

Liberals tend not to forgive or forget Harry Reid's flaws, we just deal with them.

Can you imagine the hysterics we'd be seeing from our friends on the left if it had been a prominent conservative who said something like that? If a conservative criticizes Obama's policies they scream "racist".

But this really is racist, and they say its nothing...

Yes, a liberal can accept another liberal's excuse of "you know what I meant" far more easily than when a conservative does so (and vice versa).

Maybe President Obama can give the state of the union speech using Chris Rock's voice, as a way of giving Reid an out. [:D]

I'm going to disagree with you there.  He's only got one year left, but it can be a year of enacting legislation, or a year of denials and tapdancing.

I can. I've been waiting for this thread to see how the local usual suspects would line up to defend Reid.

Obama as a senator lambasted Trent Lott for his racist remarks (yes, I thought Lott's remarks were racist) and then shrugs off Reid's equally racist remarks. Maybe Obama should have said that Harry "acted stupidly". Reid isn't the one who disgusts me. Well, he does... just not nearly as much as Obama.

snorts, I have no idea of Reids past performance, but it is hysterical watching all the repubs, independants and cons cries for dismembering him.. and slagging us off for not jumpin up in horror...carry on bleating guys

The Dems are still catching their breath from all the jumping up and down they did over Trent Lott - and they were right to do that. Now it's no big deal since it's Harry. This is what has always separated the Dems from the GOP and is one of the reasons I lean towards the latter - the obvious time and again double standards that the former commits.

Why is the NAACP silent about this? That's what I want to know. Where is Jesse Jackson's outrage? Is Al Sharpton out of the country and unavailable?

Let's keep in mind, Muse, the comment that did Lott in was perceived to be racist.  We don't know exactly what ideas of Thurmond Trent had in mind when he said it was a shame they were never brought to fruition.  The racism was inferred.  Reid's comment is much less debateable.  A "negro dialect???"  C'mon.

I can understand about how realpolitik gets discussed when the doors are closed, but choosing to frame it in that sort of terminology says something about the man, and that something it is says is going to be roundly ignored by people who often pretend with great volume that they care about such things.

I don't think the dialect portion of Reid's statement was racist, (nor was Lott's). Many people have noted that Barry turns on the vernacular when he's addressing a predominantly black audience. the light skinned comment might be a little more borderline, but then again, its just a strategic political observation. Recognizing the role of race in an election is not racist in and of itself.

the only issue here, imo, is the Democrat double standard, but thats old news.

Once again we see that Republicans have integrity, and when they fuck up, they step down...Unlike Democrats, who never even admit they fuck up, let alone resign because of it.
