-fr- I read the Diary of Anne Frank as a young teen. I read it and re-read it several times, and then about 10 years ago I went to Amsterdam for a weekend with a good friend of mine. I wanted to visit Anne Frank's hiding place, and fortunately I was able to go. It was the most profoundly moving experience of my life, bar the death of my beloved grandmother. As I walked through the museum, listening to the audiotape, I really began to get the first inkling of how she and her friends and family lived. The place is absolutely tiny. There is barely enough room for a small family, never mind the others who joined the Frank family. How Miep and her friends managed to keep these people alive for so many years is awesome. Her bravery and selflessness moved me to tears then, and again this morning when I read the tragic news. We need more 'quiet heroes' like Miep, like the Frank family, like Otto Schindler. May they all rest in peace, with our love, respect and blessings.
