How are they going to get around Federal law that prohibits it?

I would agree that tomatoes do not cost $3000 a pound but consider that if you are smoking $3000 a pound weed you are most likely not smoking more than a quarter ounce week.
I was trying to point out the relativity.

Hmmm...the "go to first unread post" doesnt seem to be working right.

Basically then, the law is a waste of time and taxpayer money.

Yes and no - it sends a signal of a sort I guess; whether that signal is "legalise" or "heaven help us we're broke" is open to debate

For one thing, illegal smugglers would probably be out of business almost immediately, unable to compete in terms of price or quality against professional legal mass producers. Likewise, whatever you grow out of your closet will pail in comparison, and your friends will make fun of you while smoking their strawberry-flavored indica-blend Burberry-essence haze.

Not my closet. I guarantee it. If you get the right genetics, and learn the idiosyncrasies of your particular strain, you can do anything in your basement that anyone can do in an industrial-sized operation, albeit on a smaller scale. To go back to the tomato metaphor, are the tomatoes you buy in the store any better than the tomatoes you grow in your yard? Same thing with weed. A plant is a plant is a plant, no matter where you're growing it. Take proper care of it, and give it the right lighting, the right medium, and the right nutes at the right time, and it doesn't care where it grew.

And in a price war, the small-scale grower can easily compete with larger operations, because they have essentially no overhead. Once you buy your initial setup, it's mostly just nutrients and the electric bill from that point on. Grow it outside, as most Californians would probably do it it were legal, and you don't even have to worry about the electric bill. A few hundred dollars worth of nutrients would grow into a several pounds of top-end smoke in less than 4 months.

Even with taxes, the price should go down.

That, I agree with. Way down. The question is, would it go down far enough that it would not be cost-effective for people to grow their own? I suspect that for many, it would, but for most people who had the space and the time, they'd rather just keep growing their own.

Whoa, mannn..... I don' unerstan' whatcher sayin'.... right over my head......

No; seriously, the stuff doesn't agree with me. Have some health problems that really aren't a good fit, and even back when i was younger and all the cool kids were doing it I never cared much for it in the first place. I get way too far inside my own head and lose too much situational awareness to really be comfortable with it. However, I do have quite a green thumb, and I have no allergy or aversion to growing the stuff. If it were ever to become legal to do so, I have no problem admitting that I'd be quite happy to make it a very worthwhile sideline. Of course, I would never do it now, because it's not legal. But if it were, I'd have no moral qualms about it, and I've always thought it was an uncommonly beautiful plant.

The problem as I see it is very simple.  The law will never pass.  Why you ask, easy because everyone that would vote yes, will fire up some to have before they go vote, then they will forget what they where going to do until the next day when they read the billed failed.

California has often been the vanguard in new laws that become federal.

Just sayin'. There was a saying once, as California goes, so goes the country.

One thing I find interesting about this is that if they put it on a ballot - and it somehow manages to get on the same ballot as same-sex marriage - it may greatly increase the chances of both measures passing. People who are motivated to come out and vote for either of these two issues would be much more likely to vote for the other one as well. This could be very interesting to watch, if it should somehow fall together that way.

Hypothetically if it were legalized....

They can do the same thing ch ch cha chia pet did just have canabis growing out the pot. I think it would sell wonders if it came with everything the first time buyer would need and would be a good way for people to learn basic cultivation a win win for all lol. Its still a nice plant that I think has a good aroma to it so even if you dont smoke it makes for a nice house plant. I'm waiting for someone to bring this idea to The Shark Tank.

I rarely smoked in the past but it would be a nice treat every now and then maybe even a selling point if the idea gets passed around in politics enough for Obama since he's the hip President and has Mrs. Pelosi to speak for Dems and California. I'd expect those crazy californians to be the ones pushing for this.

...In a historic vote, the Assembly Public Safety Committee voted 4-3 to approve Tom Ammmiano's bill to legalize and regulate marijuana, the first time a legislative body has ever voted to repeal MJ prohibition. The bill does not have time to move forward to the next legislative step, which would involve hearings by the Health Committee, and will therefore likely die at the end of the week, but Ammiano said he would re-introduce a similar bill in an upcoming session...California NORML

Fantastic news!!!  way to go California!!!

I have mixed feelings about this one.

George Soros would like us all to be drug addicts.

Drug money kept the banks going abit longer.

At the same time I view the war on drugs as a complete failure.

I am not convinced that the government needs to butt in every turn we make.

Sorry George- I am one man who wont be one of your drugs addicts.

So you're quite happy for all of this money to be going to pondlife outside of your country so long as your government gets none of it as taxes?

Well I suppose abolishing taxes.   So that would not be a factor.

But, aren't there Federal laws... I always thought that this hasn't already been done because of the Feds

I was wondering about that one too, and whether this will become a states rights issue if they pass it.

K.

I guess it depends on the administration in power.

The Bush Justice Department actively pursued those who sold and used medical marijuana.  The Obama administration has relented on the policy.

Which is not to say a full-scale legalization by California would still not be something that would be prosecuted under federal law.

Fair enough. At least you're consistent about that.
