actually, until the USA steeped in Haiti was a very wealthy country, with their sugarcane industry (world leader) and a few others. That is until the USA forced them to stop their tariffs which protected their jobs and companies. They did and the rest is history, why the USA never lived up to it's end of the bargain.

But hell, it is just another example of the very powerful bulling a smaller nation, now huge mutli-national companies own the sugarcane fields and none of the corporate profits stay in country
