I did fine... until... a fifteen page slam dunk! lol And no(!) I am not bringing it up again! I had to go away... at least on the surface... hehe... and not because of people here... but a certain person... the reason for the thread. But I was here... all along. Just a different me! A little changed... different writing style... but damn if I am letting a fifteen page anything or a someone run me off!

It was good to come back as Lockit though! lol

I wonder if anyone would figure out if it was me if I tried to go undercover. Maybe if I talked about my geek interests.

Yeah, the first squee, or Mary Jane Parker reference, you'd be cooked.

I believe it was the calling us all guppies, making fun of all us, and telling us we needed psychological help that got you ... in hot water.

Didn't have to run a gauntlet when I first showed up... but then, my first real experience on the CM boards was as a troll - for thems as remembers it, the barbecue comment will forever linger in my posting history. When I came out from under my bridge, I didn't get lambasted at all - been mostly operating under the radar, I guess.

Now, if someone wants to set up a gauntlet for me, I'll happily run it. Let's all just keep in mind I believe in equitable treatment (no, I'm not a sadist at all...)

While my original reply was kinda tongue in cheek, I honestly don't recall being run through any gauntlet.

*waves hi to Val*  wish you were gonna be down, too!

It's getting late and I should go to bed so I'm not going to read through the entire thread. If I make any points that others have covered... well... great minds think alike.

I myself did not have to run the gauntlet but when I started posting I knew that people who have been around a while can feel proprietary about "their" message boards. There is a kind of "let's haze the new guy" mentality in most boards. A sort of intitation ritual. That's why I went straight to the humor section and posted some jokes. Make 'em laugh if you wanna make friends, was my philosophy.

As for people who do have to run a gauntlet, I think they can be divided into two groups. Newbies asking typical newbie questions (how so I get rid of the vanilla ice cream cone - Hell, I asked that one ), and people of questionable morality/education/mental stability who have come to warn us of some nefarious plot of the New World Order or complain about dominant women who don't answer cmails (usually in a rambling, no paragraphs, twenty page long, discourse).

The former group may get some teasing but usually they will be welcomed. I'm not against a little teasing. It does sort of act like a intiation ritual that weeds out the assholes. If after a little teasing they come back with "why are you all mean assholes," it is a pretty good sign that they need to grow a pair.

The latter group gets lamblasted - and rightly so (unless they are truly insane in which case they have my sympathies and best wishes for a speedy recovery).

i did not have to run the gauntlet. There was a case of mistaken identity, i let that one bother me for maybe a day then i was right back because i figured, who really cares? i would love to meet most of the people i have talked to on here, but let's be honest, i most likely won't. Other than that, i have made some friends on here and most of the people have been friendly and supportive. i would, and have, recommend this site to those who are interested in BDSM. If i had to do it all again, i would still come here.

Good post, Marc!

It always amuses me when people complain about "cliques" here. By definition, a clique is narrow and exclusive, which is pretty much the exact opposite to both my experience when I joined this board, and what I've seen with countless new members who have been warmly welcomed and slid right in like they have always been here. I've been on internet forums for many years, and I can tell ya that this is one of the more welcoming ones. I'm also here to tell ya that every one of the forums I've belonged to has a group of folk that complain about cliques/hazing/treating newbies like shit.

Unsurprisingly, a lot of how one is received on any internet forum depends on how and what xhe posts as a n00b. Some assume that, because this is the internet, normal social situation rules and manners do not apply. Rather than getting to know people and letting them get to know you before getting into the jiggy jiggy, as would be done in a physical get together with a group of strangers as a matter of course, some just dive in headfirst... and then bitch when they hit their head on the bottom.

Really, is the new guy at a munch greeted warmly when all he talks about all night is his foot fetish? Is the new girl welcomed when the first thing out of her mouth (all night long) is to bitch about how there aren't any weal, twue Dominates (grammar error intentional) in the community? Are either of them well received if they choose to "educate" the members of the group about something that is common knowledge? I don't think so, and most folks wouldn't act that way when meeting other folks for the first time in real. What I don't get why it is supposed to be different here. If you walk into a party and your first act is to shit in the punchbowl, people probably aren't going to like you much.

Bottom line: Forum membership has a "getting to know you" period, just like any other social venue.
