A nice article from the Times... I was horried to find that crap's in the food over here as well. I thought the EEC had banned it.

Yup- we are exporting Obesity- so that we can sell ya more pills. HFCS DOES pack on the weight.

And if you start to look at the ingredient labels on different food products you will be amazed to see how many contain it, even items like spaghetti sauce that you would not normally associate with needing a sweetener.

yes- it took me a while to locate a brand of whole wheat bread with out it. One almost has to be a chemist to buy groceries. Note that HFCS use took off in the 80s. Compare obesity then to now. The body cant metabolize this- as too much is crammed into each cell. Regular sugar is less weight packing on - well at least me.

The only solution is to avoid processed foods and eat fresh. I used to be pretty good about that but lately I've been lazy and have been eating a lot of junk.

You can eat the junk- SOME junk- just have good food to balance it. When you eat only junk - is when the health effects take hold.

If anybody knows how to get hold of European or Mexican Coca Cola (made with cane sugar, not that corn syrup crap) from a reliable online supplier, I'd be really grateful for the tip.

I avoid all HFCS. It just doesn't taste as good as real sugar.

It's pretty complete for this area, it may not be elsewhere. That's probably an over the top solution except for crazy people like me.

I find that this bread will last longer- and the heals can be toasted and eaten. I have tried the whole wheat and the 7 grains.

I've noticed that the healthier the bread, the longer it lasts, and I think it's because of the lack of corn syrup. The whole wheat sourdough I make lasts three or four weeks before it starts to mold. It loses a lot of flavor, and dries out pretty badly, but it's still usable and certainly doesn't spoil. Tastes better at three weeks than store bread right of the shelf. All it has in it is whole wheat flour, olive oil, honey, a little bit of gluten, and a pinch of salt, and it's practically immortal. All my sourdoughs seem to last indefinitely, come to think of it - I just found some leftover biscuits from Thanksgiving, and had a couple for lunch today. They were terrific. I wonder if that's partly a function of the sourdough cultures i use, or if it's just the fact that I keep all my recipes simple.

Does it have to be Coke, kittin? I think there's a couple of the overly caffeinated colas (Jolt is one) that make a big deal of using cane sugar not HFCS. Besides, I think it was them who started adding that muck to drinks in the first place, because they were too cheap to provide their bottlers with syrup that contained proper sugar in the '70s.

That hadn't occurred to me: there will be a few cereals, biscuits and what have you on sale over here that have been manufactured in the 'States, I suppose. Still, I'll just have to be careful to avoid those brands like the plague now. I'm surprised they're allowed to import stuff with that in it in the first place, though.
