What I would like to know where are a major portions of these who donate mass ammounts of money when disasters happen in other countried but wont stop to do the same in their own.

I have the charity that I donate to as well as my family in support for better medications and hopefully one day a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

Perhaps if we had a Universal healthcare system you would not have to make such donations. Anticipating those who will reply that the "donations" will be ripped from your cold dead hand by the IRS, I say "so what?" Better to give the money to healthcare than to the robber barons of Wall & Broad.

Out of respect for the gravity of the situation, I'm making a heroic effort to block the mental  image of an operating room full of inflatable nurses. A truly heroic effort.

But I am failing, completely.

Oh thank you. I am falling down LMFAO!!!

From the Red Cross website...

quote:

How to Help
While the American Red Cross appreciates heartfelt offers to travel to Haiti or to donate household items, at this time, what the Red Cross needs the most are financial contributions – whether by check, online or by phone. You can make a donation to the American Red Cross International Response Fund at www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. Donors can designate their gifts to Haiti relief. You can also donate $10 to Haiti relief by texting “HAITI” to 90999.

Takes less than a minute, and as of an hour ago over a million people have texted their donation  to the Red Cross. That's over $10 million, ten bucks at a time. That's a hell of a lot of kids who are going to live full lives instead of die next week. Won't you please take a moment to help? What else are you going to spend that ten dollars on that you're going to value more than that?

Normally it takes 90 days from your txt to get the money distributed to the agencies. I heard this morning however that Verizon among others is forwarding the money as soon as they get the txt message in this circumstance.

I do not like the ratio of money donated to money reaching its destination with the Red Cross, however, I did donate to Doctors Without Borders, they are one of my regular charities as well.
And yes, I do also donate local, and having just given something extra for Haiti will not diminish my regular contributions.

Pahunk, normally I try to take your rantings with humor, but what you spewed on this thread is just vile.

I was a little leery of the Red Cross after the Katrina mess so our local Salvation Army was having a drive strictly for Haiti so I donated to them.

I am just wondering how far can we go to help these people. I mean we still have not straightened out the mess in New Orleans and look how long that has been.

Sure we will build tent cities...provide water and food and medical care but can we do more? Is it our responsibility to rebuild the City? Hell we have not rebuilt our own citizen’s homes.

I also wonder if the government of Haiti is capable of properly using the money and resources given by the world to rebuild their city and countrysides.
We sure have not shown the leadership in the past...Perhaps they could learn from our failures.

I was listening to Haiti’s ambassador on PBS and he was saying the City was built for 50,000 people not 2 million and that would need to be remedied when the city was rebuilt. That is a lot of people to move elsewhere or a giant investment in infrastructure. Where is the money going to come from and does Haiti have the skills and resources to do it themselves?

I can see plenty of unrest in the future and all the private and public donations of help may mean little in the long run. Haiti is in for a long long battle they may not win…Ever wonder why the buried cities of ancient civilizations were deserted…We are seeing it.

Whish I could think of the answers.

Butch

I did not cause the earth quake.

...the American attention span is very short.  This "terrible" event will hardly matter a few scandals from now.  We never rebuilt WTC,  nor Katrina.  We were going to fully restore both venues.

So this will hardly matter by summer time.

If I seem vile- after being termed a tin foil hat- and in another thread- it was a big insult to be (loki to ..) well to be like me.

So- I don't know what to tell you.

OK, for those who think extreme humanitarian need isn't enough of a reason to help--

Abandoning this situation almost certainly means waves after waves of desperate refugees. Would you happier spending the money on that?

Unfuckingbelievable.

You miss the point.

I do not see the pictures.   This illustrates how people are visually motivated.

Well Hunky, I haven't seen the pictures either, as I haven't had my television on since the earthquake in Haiti. Nevertheless I am horrified by it and intend on donating, I just haven't decided on which organization I will donate to. So that basically blows holes in your theory and excuse.

Honestly  I actually thought you had more compassion than this. I'm truly shocked by your reaction. Sad, really, really sad.

Pahunk, Katrina happened back in 2005 and the WTC back in 2001. You do realize, do you not, that they're still rebuilding in the Balkans after the war in the 1990's and they've only not long back sorted out the situation in Chernobyl?

And though I was never given the chance to see it with my own eyes, though I have had contact with people, I would argue that down in Mississippi they've done an admirable job of rebuilding in that time.

And while I don't have the means myself to donate at the moment, I'm happy to pledge income from my forthcoming films and any prize money at festivals to Medecins Sans Frontiers or some other charity to help alleviate some form of suffering.

I'm also f*cking disgusted that not one major British politician has come forward to express anything regarding Haiti.

I think you misunderstood my post...I am all for helping as much as we can…I did how about you?

I am talking about what can be done in the future to rebuild...to give these people permanent shelters...Who is going to pay...I don't think we can afford to rebuild a 2 million city do you? Maybe you can tell me in all your wonderful wisdom how we can when we can't help our own... That is why I was asking the questions...damn you are stupid sometimes.

During Katrina- I donated- as well as loaded the trucks.

Who knows- maybe I am clinically depressed.

If you're done, Father Butch...perhaps you might address the refugee issue raised.

Oh, and by the way--where do you get the idea we can't help our own?

If all you have is the stupid label, I know I'm done wasting time.

Stupid I have to counter your Unfucking believable...How you could misunderstand my first post to have any meaning of yours I have no idea...except stupid.

Yes little to talk about with someone that would rather start an useless argument rather than discuss the real troubled future of millions of Haitians and the future after the immediate help we all want to give.
