From the Red Cross website...

How to Help
While the American Red Cross appreciates heartfelt offers to travel to Haiti or to donate household items, at this time, what the Red Cross needs the most are financial contributions – whether by check, online or by phone. You can make a donation to the American Red Cross International Response Fund at www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. Donors can designate their gifts to Haiti relief. You can also donate $10 to Haiti relief by texting “HAITI” to 90999.

Takes less than a minute, and as of an hour ago over a million people have texted their donation  to the Red Cross. That's over $10 million, ten bucks at a time. That's a hell of a lot of kids who are going to live full lives instead of die next week. Won't you please take a moment to help? What else are you going to spend that ten dollars on that you're going to value more than that?

I gave a 50 to Dr's without borders. I figured if I am gonna drink expensive hoppy beer, I can cough up that much.

Stef recommended it and they look very worthy.

Gosh- I dont know why every one is so revved up over this.

The place was a disaster prior to the quake- and now the place is now a disaster.

So it is a wash.   Maybe the visual pics are motivational.

tazzygirl -> RE: Brother, Can You Spare A Ten Dollar Bill? (1/15/2010 3:32:28 PM)

And prior to the disaster people were discussing how to help them. This just sped up the system.

Yeah, that one's going to be critically important. They need every doctor they can get their hands on, and every hour matters.

But you know, on a tragedy of this scale, as long as you're donating to an organization that does relevant work, you can hardly go wrong. Because they need fucking everything.

Before the earthquake, they didn't have tens of thousands of bodies lying in the streets.

Before the earthquake, they had shelter.

Before the earthquake, the prisons held the criminals: now they have escaped.

Before the earthquake, there was reasonable access to food and drinking water - not perfect, but there was something.

Beforethe earthquake... now, it's after the earthquake.

Now, there are thousands and thousands of dead people lying in the middle of the streets. The dead cohabiting with the living.

You baffle me.

Good point. They were going to die of something sooner or later anyway, so fuck it. They might as well die of starvation, gangrene, or whatever right now and  get it over with. Probably better that the babies die of gangrene while they're still infants anyway, before their mothers have a chance to get too attached to them.

I'm going to contact those charities and see if it's too late to get my money back...

No I just don't look at TV.

It is just another disaster.

Maybe it is a bad one.  The larger world thumbed their noses at Haiti long ago.   These people were eating mud for food.

Where were all the helpers prior to this?

I made a donation to the Red Cross yesterday.
When I lived in N.H. an organization I belonged to helped out the Red Cross with blood drives, soup kitchens, fires etc.
They're usually the first ones on scene with disasters like this and the Tsunami disaster.

Fair question, but shit... hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of people are starving to death and dying of disease, traumatic injury, infection, and exposure right now, today. What difference does it make what a shit hole the country was before the earthquake? If it had been England, and the people were relatively prosperous and had promising futures ahead of them - and the entire country had been leveled from an earthquake - would it then be OK to send help? I don't think you quite thought this one through all the way. You're way too nice a guy to mean what it sounded like you were saying.

pahunkboy -> RE: Brother, Can You Spare A Ten Dollar Bill? (1/15/2010 4:08:15 PM)

It is more of a case where I dont watch TV.

I have read Paul Farmer's book on Haiti before this happened, and desired to help them... so perhaps this disaster makes it that much more urgent

tazzygirl -> RE: Brother, Can You Spare A Ten Dollar Bill? (1/15/2010 4:42:55 PM)

I cant find the article, but it was talked about in one of the earlier ones. Countries were meeting to find ways to help the people of Haiti. As i said, this just sped things up.

I'm sure you did.  Is there a portion of the red cross that is only dedicated to helping white people?...The white cross?

Or did you strike some sort of a prearranged deal with the Red Cross where you made them promise that none of the blood would go and help them pathetic foriegners?

I donated money to Haiti relief last year and the year before.  Some people thumbed their noses, some did not but the reality is that they are suffering even more horriffically than most people in the States can even fathom. It doesn't hurt to help at any time but sheesh - if there ever WAS a time to help, it is now.

Actually, what I think contravenes the rules here.

Have you donated?
