Aneirin -> The World problem ? (1/18/2010 6:33:02 PM)

After watching tonight's edition of Panorama on the BBC, I got to wondering just what is the world's biggest problem, just what is it, and is it the same problem that has always been since daily events  first started to be recorded. The Panorama programme brought two seperate issues up, ethnicity and religion both of which I know is a constant problem worldwide even today, in our so called educated world, these two issues just do not go away. So, what is it, what do others believe is the root cause of our current world's problems, is it religion, or is it race, if neither, what in your oppinion is it and has the world's people seen it before in times past ?

The problem is our animal nature.

The solution is our godly nature.

I'm sorry, but I'm afraid there is no  solution. We're an inherently self-destructive species. Our capacity to destroy each other will always exceed our instinct to touch  each other.

The world's biggest problem is people who think the world has One Biggest Problem, to which every focus should turn at whatever cost.

I think it was Abbey who likened us to cancer.

Cancer reproduces rapidly and without restraint.
Cancer destroys the host.

A pretty accurate likening I'd say.

Lady E, I appreciate your intentions. However, I'm an atheist. Perhaps the step beyond an animal nature could be considered human nature (Oh man, I have a feeling I just opened the box on that one).

call it what you will UN - we're on the same page I think whatever we call it; the aspiration to be more than what comes most naturally

Termyn8or -> RE: The World problem ? (1/19/2010 2:49:09 AM)

Well overpopulation has been mentioned which may dwarf my one word answer :

People.

But it's not just the overabundance of people, it is their attitude. The natural desire to achieve has been bastardised into greed, and the quest for power over others.

Actually I might have to say instead that people's power over others is the problem because nobody seems to know how to use power with restraint.

I personally have some power, over three people, almost the power of life and death, but only if I push it. My edicts are few and simple. Stressing cooperation and consideration above all else. Things were going to hell recently, but I finally got a big breakthrough. People who were ready to kill each other the other day are now kicking it, having a steak dinner as of today together and even burning one. It was my job to engineer this, that is a responsibility. Power without rsponsibility is tyranny, and that is the main problem. Decision makers are isolated from their follies and other wrongdoings. There is no accountability.

Anyone who has ever studied more that two words about psychology knows that power with the lack of responsibility is what corrupts the most, and is in fact one of the prime reasons for most of the world's problems. But then there is a root to that problem.

When you are born, your Parents are in a position of authority, but it is their responsibility to enable you to mature. This is not going to happen during the twenty years you live at home. I believe it should, and also think that some influence in this country is hampering that stage. Various theories exist. Government intervention has removed a good portion of personal responsibility from people's lives. With that comes the associated loss of rights, and power. We have let this happen.

People in power very rarely if ever experience any consequences. THAT is one very major problem in this world.

I remember an old anti-war commercial - "What if the leaders had to fight the battles ?", then cut to two older looking guys in business suits duking it out in the desert somewhere. I wish they would run that about twenty times a day, especially after any ads from the military trying to get new enlistees.

In other words, Bush wanted to go to Iraq - "You go first, leader". Obama wants Afghanistan, go get it. We will be right behind you. Not in front of you.

US : I told you no nukes !
Iraq : I'll have nukes if I want
US : I'll bomb your puny country
Iraq : Go ahead, then the world will love you so much more
US : Fuck you
Iraq : We weren't going to bomb you anyway
US : It looks like you want to bomb Israel, our brother
Iraq : Only if they bomb us, you think I am stupid or what ?
US : Well you said .....
Iraq : Yeah well you ran your fucking mouth too

All the time they are pummeling each other, getting bruised up. Now if things worked that way we might have a chance. Want war ? Get into it. I have learned greatly from what some may term the underworld. One of the main things I learned is that you have to be able to take care of your own dirty work. Any protection you might buy can be rescinded. That puts the protector in a superior position. You are beholden, and therefore not free. How can you be a leader if you are not even fucking free ?

Ask most politicians, and if you really get an honest answer, it will scare you.

The only problem the world has is humanity, as a dominant species we are a dismal failure. Our brilliant minds come up with more ways to kill each other than we do anything else.

vincentML -> RE: The World problem ? (1/19/2010 5:44:19 AM)

True, and we also have the most advanced ability by far to use tools. Along with our genius to kill however we have art, enthusiasm, and idealistic vision. We are the only species that can project into the future. We are the only animals with the knowledge of our own deaths, I think. It is a complex mix with our lethal skills. But evolution of the human species did not come with any gaurantees of survival for either the species or the individual. Perhaps that is why we had to invent gods.

Aneirin -> RE: The World problem ? (1/19/2010 6:00:55 AM)

Ok, so the problem the world has is people, and with that our animal nature, but we are here and that is that, but in an attempt to understand and via understanding learn and hopefully avoid the continuous stupidities we make for history to record, what can we do about it, and I mean on a personal level, not the politicians, because they won't unless forced by consensus of oppinnion.

Just look at recorded history, one thousand years ago, a hundred years ago, ten years ago, one year ago and yesterday, have we evolved, or are we still doing the same old same old thing. What might have been a thousand years ago, confined to a small area, a land mass maybe, with our advances in technology is now on a global scale.

But the Panorama programme that inspired me to create this thread was an edition dealing with the Palestinian and Israeli issue and it was in that that I noticed the interchangeability of the two most damaging of our human constructs, that of religion, and ethnicity, the two seperate subjects became one and then become seperate again as the user needs it, the two subjects becoming interchangeable.

Blah....

My doggies just want hugs, petting, food and water, and they are happy as hell. People aren't like that at all, we aren't content once our basic needs are taken care of, we then focus on acquiring objects to show our superiority to other humans, and thus the discontent is spread, and desired.

I guess I shouldn't be commenting on others answers, though, but I don't like people dissing my doggies. [:@]

If I'm answering this from a "real" perspective as in what is lacking physically in the world that if in greater abundance would help, that would be cheap energy. That would also bring me one step close to being able to buy a spaceship with some very carefully screened others, and be away from this mess.

If answering what is internally wrong with people, it is what I said above, we humans think we are so very precious, akin to god if you like. We put carpet on the floor to comfort our precious feet, we perfume our nasty bodies with perfumes, we stuff huge amounts of food down our gullet, we think we deserve millions to be spent on us to save our lives, we think we deserve watered lawns, huge houses, 60 inch plasmas, ipods, every manner of stupid shit the brain can build we want, all the better if others can't afford it, that just proves you are better than they are. We think we all deserve a car with 24 hour access and fuel cheaper than water. We think our country is better, we think our family is more important, we think we deserve, for whatever reason, other than a conceit of innate worth.  We don't riot when we kill thousands of those other people outside our group, but are outraged if it happens to us.

So, anyway, the problem with humanity is that we all think we are more important to put it plainly, and therefore we deserve what everyone else has, regardless. Thus we become jealous, envious, angry, etc... And the irony is there is enough to go around, if the goal wasn't to prove our superiority over others or conversely feel negatively towards those we perceive having more than they need.

The poor don't like the rich, generally.
The rich feel superior to the poor, generally.
The "educated" feel superior to the "uneducated".
The advertising shows you the products that make you better than those that don't have them.
If we won the lottery we'd buy a big house..indulge, party, get laid.., and give the rest to those we "love".  How selfish.

We are all selfish, self-involved, little wannabe gods, that think they deserve.

Most are anyway, and those that deny it are in denial.

Knowing you are inadequate in every way, compared to the ideal, and peace may be upon you.

Ask what teeny boppers would have and be if they could select anything, most likely it's rich, and famous. The don't say I wish I had a billion dollars to help others, they say they which they had a billion dollars to buy token of superiority, "big house", "expensive cars".

There is no solution to this problem though, as it is the pursuit of superiority that has driven us, why would one go to school for 12 years if not for the prestige "doctor" invokes. Why would someone risk everything if not for the perceptual benefits that "rich" provides.

The core of that is pussy though, there would probably be less motivation for proving superiority if not for sex. Pussy likes Money, Pussy likes Smart, Pussy likes Big Houses. Pussy like Strength..... , and Women obsess on looks (don't lie), because
Dick like having a woman that society tells him is worth more than other women.

Rarely a hot woman lives in a shack for long. Rarely a rich man leaves alone.

I blame pussy. [:D]

However you describe it, Aneirin, we are tribal and hostile to other tribes. I think NTUY has a great rant with much truth in it.

On a personal level there is nothing we can do about averting the continuing obscenities of history. Murder, starvation and genocide will always be with us. I believe each individual can provide for his own life satisfaction and then watch that he doesn't get caught in the crossfire. The latter is difficult because as you know, the fuckers lie to us all the time.
