Status: offline 		Marquis in so many ways was a genious. Such a fine line between insanity and genious. Adding to the remarks above, He also tried his hand at being an inventor. He would take women , pay them to be beaten to a bloody pulp all to try out an antibiotic ointment he was developing.

In a lot of ways he was no different than most of us here, he liked extemes and was a true sadist, yet he didnt beat his own wife. He acted out his desires and was honest about his wants and needs either in real life or with the pen. I do NOT condone non consentual activities at all.

In his time just as in our time...people want to destroy or  conform the things they fear or dont understand. So many of his works were lost because of the ignorance and fear of those who didnt know how to handle a man that liked to color outside the lines....is it really much different today for us?  So many hated him or were predjudiced against him, people that didnt understand a deviant mind or more so were afraid of their own desires, yet I have noticed even now that a large majority of the discrimination and predjudice against us who like things a bit different/deviant actually come from within our own community of lifestylers....sad but true...

May light, peace and beauty line the path of your journey and may you all find the one to make all your dreams come true.

Status: offline 		I'm watching "Quills" right now.  I think what makes this story so facinating is it's taking place in the insane asylem and infused with DeSade's writings.

try to catch Quills-  I havent seen it but has top notch actors so I would thnk it to be well-worth viewing. 
As a writer, Sade is lousy.  His thoughts are all over the place, he jumps around from documenting his sexual proclivities,  to his problems with the politics in place at the time of his writing, to his wrath at the Church.  Then goes on long philosophical rants about how things "should be".  It more like reading someone's journal than a good novel read.  "Justine" is tolerable-  if you read it, I'd like to hear what you thought about it.

I think it's entirely his short comings as a writer that make his writing so interesting. I agree with you as to the faults but viewed as a piece of post-modern writing (which of course it isn't) I think it is brilliant. I love his philosophical rants.

Status: offline 		Well, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't jump on the brilliant bandwagon,
but yes, I agree he is certainly interesting.
 
If you read "Venus in Furs", what did you think of that?  To me, it read like a perverted Harlequin romance novel.  Ha ha!
 
I recently read what I thought was a brilliant dissertation on S&M.
It's authored by a philosophy professor at Gettysburg College.
She's pro-alternative lifestyles.  The book is "Counterpleasures"
and author is Karmen MacKendrick.  Published by SUNY Press if anyone is interested.  Not an easy read, I had to read a couple of the chapters twice,  but she offers a fresh perspective on the reality of practicing S&M.

Status: offline 		Thanks for the links.  i am definetly going to check them out.  i sorta got off track with the Marquis as Rais reallly was a lunatic and lunatics fascinate me.  It was prolly Quills as it was also in the insane assylum. 

Very interesting reading everyones thoughts on the Marquis though.  i have yet to form an opionon.  He seems to be a most complicated man.

Status: offline 		He was definitely fascinating, and a true libertine. Like Oscar Wilde, he refused to let society hide behind its pretty fashionable facade, and for that he deserves a place in history.
