U.S. Bound by Obama's Copenhagen Emissions Pledge -- U.N. Official
By LISA FRIEDMAN of Greenwire
Published: January 20, 2010

The United Nations will hold President Obama to his promise that the United States will reduce carbon emissions even if the Senate cannot pass climate legislation, U.N. climate chief Yvo de Boer said this morning.

In his first public comments since the Copenhagen climate summit last month that produced a nonbinding promise from major-emitting countries to cut greenhouse gases, de Boer noted that Obama vowed the United States will slash carbon about 17 percent below 2005 levels in the coming decade.

Yesterday's special election in Massachusetts, in which a Republican won the Senate seat formerly held by the late Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy since 1962, calls into question Congress' ability to pass a cap-and-trade bill, but it does not alter the U.S. commitment, de Boer said.

...
"Whatever route is taken, the president of the United States committed to a 17 percent emissions reduction in Copenhagen," de Boer said. "The president of the United States committed to more ambitious emissions reductions for 2030 and 2050. And it is those statements to which the international community will hold the government of the United States accountable."

Ignorance, hubris, or attempted blackmail?

probably a little of all 3

Who cares? Obama's going to completely ignore it, so what difference does it make?

...none of the above. Just the rest of the world suggesting that the word of the Democratically elected US head of state ought to stand for something.

Philo, your comment falls under ignorance, we don't elect kings. His comments have no bearing on US policy at all. Thats how our Republic works. He can negotiate a treaty and get the senate to ratify it, then it means something. Otherwise his comments have no more force than mine.

Yvo de Boer isn't the rest of the world, philo. [sm=lol.gif]

..so what you're saying is that the US should never be held accountable for what the people it sends to international meetings say. That the words that come out of the mouths of US diplomats are worthless. Seriously? The word of a US diplomat means so little? And you wonder why there is such a thing as distrust of Americans?

pahunkboy -> RE: UN to the US: Ignorance, hubris, or attempted blackmail? (1/21/2010 3:57:28 PM)

I thought

1. we fund  a large portion of the UN
2. we the US is a sovereign country?

The UN is building one heck of a new building on their 17 acre prime NYC lot.

Perhaps we can team up with Iran and vote for sanctions?[:D]

Slavehandsome -> RE: UN to the US: Ignorance, hubris, or attempted blackmail? (1/21/2010 4:05:23 PM)

If Obama promised it, don't worry, it'll never come true.

uhh ... nothing that comes out of a (any) diplomat's mouth at international meetings is worth believing.

That's the reason for diplomats, after all. [:D]

Treaty's, now, signed and ratified, hold a bit more weight.

But, in reality, the only thing that "makes' nations do the things that "they say" is self-interest.  That's the basis of all international agreements and understandings.

All else is fantasy and wishful thinking.

I expect Obama to try, it will make it easier for third workd nations to catch up with us economically and that is much of his agenda, global spreading of the wealth.

Sanity -> RE: UN to the US: Ignorance, hubris, or attempted blackmail? (1/21/2010 4:22:37 PM)

I seriously doubt that Obama will try it, the scam has been exposed and the few die-hard global warming fear mongers who remain are little more than laughingstocks. Followers of Rev. Gore are about as rare as followers of the Rev. Jim Jones these days...

Wishful thinking, no one can say sanity isn’t an optimist.

How could anyone possibly believe such a thing? I mean do you seriously believe that or are you just intentionally engaging in political deceit?

It's quite the unique form of paranoia to suppose an elected leader would put people that don't vote for them first.

*FR*

Hell you can't even take UN reports at their word, they had to recant another flawed portion of their Nobel winning report yesterday... So much for trusting diplomats and their cronies, eh?

Yeah I guess that got snuck through the news cycle yesterday like a few other things.... Search for IPCC recants glacier warning.

Thanks for the cross link.... didn't catch the topic here, and only caught the story earlier today.

Philosophy. YES!! Words and promises from people who have no authority to make them are worthless. What do you not understand about that? Why are you confused about that? Obama (any US president) is not a king, he does not rule by decree.

How can you actually be confused about this?

...the same way that, once, i had to patiently explain to one of your countrymen here on these boards that the Queen does not declare war nowadays. Nor does she make law.

Well, that's one explanation. That the definition of head of state varies wildly from country to country.

Another explanation is that i'm confused because, when GWB was in power, the same posters who here suggest that the word of a president should carry no weight were suggesting that it was unpatriotic to not support the word of a sitting president.

Hypocrisy, or at least the appearence of it, often confuses me.......
