Hello oceans, You can still do many positive things to change things in this Country and your local community. This site is a minor detail. Enjoy the forums and then go and do the things that really matter. The U S is the most generous Country since the beginning of time. Keep it going..michael

That is not my issue with his admin... I hate agreeing with popeye, but the insiders from wall street really piss me off.. and that was a poor move

I was concerned before, but then I knew when he appointed Geithner to head the Treasury we in for a lot more of the same kinds of trouble, and he did this quite early.

For the record I had no love for the other side in the last election either.

I guess faced with the global financial meltdown he lost his nerve for reform, this was a 100 year rate of return event in my view. Nobody can really say any other elected leader has faced such a prospect in recent terms. So yeah he fell for the ‘don’t tie our hands or you’ll effect the recovery’ line. I'd add the 'too big to fail' line is also true and the reform that is needed in my view is how to reduce an entity and spread out the risk so it no longer is too big.

I think you've missed it altogether. The risk is already spread out to the taxpayers. Why on earth would they want, or allow, changes in the current system?

In simplest explanation, gamble with money that doesn't belong to you, reap rewards if the bets pay off, pass the risk and loss on to someone else.

Maybe it is a time we all stopped thinking about making money and individual gain and started thinking more about the community we are in ? Me, because of my views, I am hoping post college to head for an agricultural commune, because I believe in, the wealth of the many over and above the wealth of the singular, possibly unknown. I would rather live in a comfortable community of like minds than be a wealthy and alone single.

Yeah, that thing our friends over the pond seem so shit scared of, but perhaps they don't know beyond the commie hunts of the fifties where they  condemned many after they had provided their use that socialism can take many forms, not all of them what has been in the world so far. Hell, pre Roman conquest of Britain, from what we can discern from what exists and is interpreted, what Britain had, was a collection of communities that traded and fought amongst each other. The Roman model we all seem to use was good for a while, but it could not stop the Empire falling into insignificance and history, that model has a finite use, beyond that who knows, maybe look at the host countries of that once mighty Roman rule and see where they rank in world credibility now.

This is why the idea of the government buying shares was always better than just signing blank cheques to banks. What the US government will get back is repayments with interest whilst those that gave money in return for shares will eventually sell those shares and reap more benefits of a higher share price. I remember saying to someone at the height of the crisis to buy RBS shares because they are at their lowest price and can only rise in value. He said 'yeah or the bank will collapse and the shares will be worthless.' I think however now so much has been invested in it the government will never let it fail. So if people had bought those RBS shares it would be like printing money for themselves eventually. We know eventually the government is going to want to offload those shares and we know that when they do so the price will automatically go up due to demand. It's just a waiting game for speculators.

If you want to avoid bailing out the banks and not have that lack of action effect people in the street then what is needed is to separate the speculation business from the banking business for customers but then how would they offer high interest rates for customers? Everyone would be fine not bailing banks out as long as it isn't the bank they kept their money in.

Oh, long before the 50s, the Red Scare was among the tools to get voters to side with business rather than workers--not to mention another common theme, immigrantphobia.

And in the 50s, it was a tool by a desperate Senator to save his career--at the expense of all else.

Tell people here to be scared, and they'll willing go alone with all kinds of stupid shit. Today, that's fear of terrorists.

They'll yell and scream about rights and independence---and then willing hand over their freedom and their money to the government.

Education has never been our strong suit.

Disappointment is the road to recovery when it comes to politics. a road prompted, in this case, by Obama's naviety more than anything else. Recovery is something you'll have to do on your own though. It comes with realizing they really don't give a shit about you. It is about power, money, and power, pretty much in that order and nothing else. Remember, these are people who like to wrap themselves in the garb of "public service."
