This is a beautiful video describing deforestation; Deforestation has a radical and destructive effect on everyone, not just the people who live in and depend on the forest.

The last minute is especially moving.

TreasureKY -> RE: 90 Acres A Minute (1/24/2010 6:56:23 PM)

Hmmmm....

I saw a lot of claims presented as fact.

I saw a tree destroyed for the sake of creating a video.

I'm not sure I'd describe it as moving.

Rhodes85 -> RE: 90 Acres A Minute (1/24/2010 8:14:16 PM)

I have to agree with TreasureKY.

My thoughts exactly.  Thank you for pointing this out.

Which claims are questionable?

That deforestation is happening?

Or that is it destructive?

While we have no counter facts about re-forestation and I might doubt those facts anyway, the quickest way to fuck with our health is to cut down a net (?)  90 acres a day of oxygen producing and carbon absorbing rain forests...everyday.

Termyn8or -> RE: 90 Acres A Minute (1/25/2010 12:30:31 AM)

Actually aquatic flora are responsible for the largest part of the re-oxygenation of the atmosphere. But then we are killing that as well so it really doesn't matter.

You probably know this, but for those that don't- a rainforest ecosystem, by it's nature, holds a very high percentage of the available nutrients in the canopy, not in the soil. When the canopy is removed (deforestation), the flow of nutrients to the relatively poor soil stops, and evaporation of water from the now exposed soil increases dramatically.

A google search for "desertification" will explain why you don't often hear about reforestation in a rainforest ecosystem.

servantforuse -> RE: 90 Acres A Minute (1/25/2010 6:51:48 AM)

I'll believe it when Al Gore flies there in his private jet and tells us about it in person. His new book " an inconvenient tree "..will be out soon.

We haven't heard from Al Gore lately. Maybe it's to cold to go outside ?

rockspider -> RE: 90 Acres A Minute (1/25/2010 8:21:10 AM)

I think these detracters should have a trip to Africa and Asia where it is happening in a big style and se what desertification really do to people.

Lucylastic -> RE: 90 Acres A Minute (1/25/2010 9:55:17 AM)

Going by the numbers at the forestation dept of canada
13 million hectares of land are deforested per year
thats 35,616 hectares per day
divide that by 1440 (the minutes in a day)
leaves us with 24.73 hectares per minute
24.73 hectares =61.acres(numbers from 2008)
not quite 90...but still  impressively huge

oh and the world isnt getting bigger and trees dont magically re plant themselves and grow overnight, it takes planning and effort, but shucks theres no money in it, so its not worth worrying about is it.

Deforestation worldwide results in up to 20% of global human-caused emissions according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

The numbers are down, the reforestation numbers are up, but the worst offenders in the world for ignorance and no action????
3 guesses
and the first two dont count
Pathetic really no worse than that its blatant arrogance and ignorance.
You sound like parrots reciting the al gore is evil handbook

LadyEllen -> RE: 90 Acres A Minute (1/25/2010 10:07:23 AM)

Look Lucy, climate change is a conspiracy 'K?

Or, was it that climate change denial is a conspiracy?

Ah well, in the end it doesnt really matter - because nothing happens unless the dollar leads the way (or peso or pound or whatever) and aint no money in leaving a forest to its own devices, whilst there is in someone else's devices, either way

Mercnbeth -> RE: 90 Acres A Minute (1/25/2010 11:01:00 AM)

So - When are the UN sanctioned, climate change police invading and occupying these sovereign nations where this "devastation" is taking place? Obviously those governments and the locals can't be trusted with this valuable resource. I think the ancestors of the people calling for their personal philosophy and self interest used a smilier argument regarding the indigenous peoples of North America a few hundred years ago. This group of 'savages', perhaps distinguished by their business suits, work clothes, hard hats, and bulldozers, replacing buckskins and wild horses; aren't just taking up land needed for our expansion - they are ruining our air! How dare they!?

The convenient truth about the false representations made by those who became millionaires as a result of perpetrating the hoax the latest being Himalayan glaciers might disappear by 2035, made by the climate change special interests; notwithstanding - Is this the next "good war" front?

Termyn8or -> RE: 90 Acres A Minute (1/25/2010 12:38:45 PM)

Merc, you do have a way with words.

At any rate, my understanding is that natures cure for deforestation or desertification is flooding. Especially with sea water, which contains the nutrients needed in the soil. This takes some time. I think that's why alot of people live in flood zones or on coastal land. The fertile soil. So what every so many years you have to build another house ? Personally I would've moved after the first flood, but then I am not a farmer.

The shame of it is that the almighty dollar still prevails. It brings me back to a book I read a very long time ago called Infernoland, which was a paperback loosely based on Dante's Inferno. It described hell, and in that realm were two politicians on opposite sides of an issue. The "first person" asked the guide or whoever why they were both here with their anuses reconnected to their mouth so when they talk only shit would come out. The answer was that they both thought they were wrong.

I still hold my stance on the matter. Global warming might be occurring. We might be contributing to the process, but I doubt our effect is very profound. Nonetheless, there is no practical way to remove our influence on the envirnment at this time.

I don't care about the smugness of AC manufacturers who might look forward to increased sale in the future, nor the dismay of big oil, seeing a slight drop in their income due to this phenomenon. They only care about them fucking selves and it has always been that way and it always will be. Oil companies would probably cause an ice age if they could. But AC manufacturers would like to see it get as hot as Vulcan.

Business as usual.
