i was wondering what your first thought is when you read posts from people who :

Everything they say is in a mean or sarcastic way
They put down everyone and slam people for making a puncuation mistake.

They always try to start arguments or constantly coming on with a joke to throw a great thread off track.

Do you get mad or do you do like i do and feel sorry for the ones who do that?

What do you think their reasons are for acting this way? thanks

I don't think anything at all. I shrug my shoulders and ignore the post. It's online. How are they possibly harming me? And if I'm upset by it I really should be taking a better look at my own life as to why something  online would so upset me.

The reasons are endless. Some are small people that have no power in their real lives and try to use this format to get power. Some take pride in 'saying it like it is' which to me is a cowardly way to say they don't want to censor themselves. Some just can't help it, they don't know how to interact with others. There are as many reasons as there are people.

Yes I usually do pity them, I think most are scared inside and are probably pretty darn lonely. Sometimes I get angry but more at myself because while I want to call them out on their petty behavior I'm just not good at that.

This.

Additionally, if something online upsets me (or anyone) that much, I'd say it's a good indicator that it's time to turn off the computer and go do something else.  If it's against the forum guidelines, I'll report it, but I don't allow it to upset me.

There are tiers of web forum seniority. It would be nifty seeing someone do an in-depth analysis of how the evolution of tenure at a certain website makes individuals prone to certain reactions.

The phenomenon you are describing happens somewhere in the mild to moderate tenure timeframe, where the individual has been on the site long enough to feel s/he has seen the stereotypical questions/threads that will pop up enough to be able to offer up a clever and cynical quip because s/he can claim to have heard the issue as if it was a broken record.

The problem often with people in this stage, is that their ability to more specifically discern how honest and genuine a comment is hasn't been completely developed yet, so they treat all such threads/comments with the same aloof, pseudo-witty retort presuming that it's always merited because the content of the post seems familiar to them.

It happens to everyone on message boards long enough. It's a certain rite of passage to be able to feel you're at the point where you can make this quick reaction, especially if, by virtue of your long-term presence on the boards, you're able to have other posters who like you jump on board.

The entire process is actually probably a wonderfully ripe playground for any sociologist itching for a small/medium-sized personal project.

I think they are frequently blunt, not mean, and that the people who complain about them aren't actually looking for other opinions as they claim, but instead just want everyone to tell her that she was right. Even when nobody agrees with her.

I also have no time for people who tell the people responding to a thread that they aren't responding properly.  Because they aren't confirming the op's beliefs. You don't get to tell other people what to say. If you can't deal with people telling you that you are dead wrong, then don't ever talk to anyone.

And whining about it is the ultimate mistake, it just confirms in everyone's beliefs that you aren't someone they would ever want to talk to.

Jeez I hope not. I really don't like to think of myself as being that jaded, to where I react like that to what is usually an innocous post.

Gee, which way of acting are you interested in? There are at least three or four separate questions here.

1) mean or sarcastic - sometimes funny, sometimes appropriate, sometimes pathetic
2) punctuation nazis - sometimes right on,sometimes overboard. When punctuation and grammar are so bad that the message is virtually lost, it deserves to be slammed. If it's an obvious error that someone should really know about, it's fine to correct it. If it's nothing more than a typo or technically incorrect punctuation that doesn't affect the meaning or the flow of the writing, then it's just stupid to waste time complaining about it.
3) always trying to start arguments - if that's what they're actually doing, then they need help. If they're seriously, logically disagreeing with something that was written, then more power to them.
4) joking to throw a great thread off track - how do you know that was their intention? Maybe they just saw a good opportunity for a joke. If they really are trying to throw a thread off track, then they have a problem.

Excellent point.  What those who do this fail to realize is that everyone hasn't been on the board as long as them, so for some of us, it is our first time having a particular conversation.

One of my pet peeves is when people flame someone for starting a new topic by saying "Use the search function!!!"  Well, frankly, i don't care if the topic was discussed 4 years ago.  i want to talk about it now.  If someone thinks the 4 year old thread already covered all of the angles, they should feel free to stay out of the discussion, but they don't need to stop the rest of us from enjoying the conversation.

Sometimes there are posts that are near impossible to think of as anything but obvious intentional trolls. Some people just don't respond at all in those cases. Some people trot out the reactions mentioned above. Or sometimes some people can be passively disregarding of it without actually being insulting...like sidetracking the thread to one where you (and potentially others) offer up a favorite recipe.

Because the Anonymity of the internet allows people to be jackasses without having to deal with the consequences? I mean. What's going to happen if you offend someone on the boards. you might get banned? Oh no.

"Why, whatever shall I do. I'll just have to create another name and post under that one. What a horrid fate. My poor post count, lost! My reputation as a funnyman/snark factory, gone!"

I think it's rather funny how prevalent the 'one line which adds nothing to the conversation or subject at hand' rule violation is. It's stated right there in the forum-rules thread that you're to avoid it. And yet many are rampantly guilty, with little to no retaliation. And they do this, because they know they can get away with it. It's already been proven. Take a look at just about any 'popular' thread on these boards and you'll find at least a third of the posts are made by folks trying to be snarky/sarcastic/witty/sharp tongued and prove that they are, thusly, higher on the social pecking order of douchebags with no real goal or purpose here.

I sometimes think of CM as a virtual yard sale. You have to paw through a lot of dreck, but you can find some cool stuff.
