Meanwhile, the Iraq enquiry has started. Looks like Blair and Straw are in the mud for throwing the country into the invasion :-) .

The Celts were there before the Romans, who were there before the Angles and Saxons and other assorted Germanic tribes. Welsh is a Celtic language.

For an overview of Celtic languages (there are many): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_languages.

As Kittin says, the Welsh were the original population of England, and may even have been here before the celts arrived. (There's some debate over whether they were celts or not themselves.) They were driven into Wales by the Romans, in either case. There's some doubt about where the Celts arrived in Northern Europe from, come to that. The stories about Hy Brasil, Atlantis and Lyonnesse probably don't have any historical basis, though.

You guys like the idea of sex, but you guys are so culturally repressed, sex actually terrifies you guys.

It's the same with the English, actually [8D] .

And now, back to British politics: yay [:D] !

Thanks to both you and kittin.... interesting stuff

Cameron wins it by around 40 seats. Unelected Gordon will soon be unelected again.

If he gets back in, life will be over and I may as well move to the Midlands. [8D]

What does it matter? Unelected Rupert Murdoch will still be in power.

Our biggest problem is that we have two of the best politicians in our country concerned with running London - Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson.

Our second biggest problem is that after years of Thatcherism we elected Labour to take us out of the problems we were experiencing along with every other Western country (including the United States) and after 13 years they have consistently cocked it up.

BNP is living in Cloud Cuckoo Land. But so too is Respect and the Socialist Worker Party. Trade unionism and 'jobs for the boys' is so 1970's. And yes, we've already seen what 'jobs for the boys' really meant with people like Jack Straw and all the other Labour MPs fiddling expenses.

I feel it's about time we Brits found our backbone and our balls collectively and elected a Liberal Democrat government and started facing up to reality - that the actual solution is moving to the left and rebuilding society from the bottom up.

But no, after decades of being screwed by the Tories and then by Labour we're going to probably elect another Tory government because too many people are going to vote how Rupert Murdoch tells them to vote or they'll believe what is written in the Daily Mail and the class struggle will continue and instead of coming together as a nation - what we really need to do in these times - the British working class is going to get shafted yet again by the rich and the corporate parasites in the City.

For me the writing was on the wall in the recent spell of bad weather when we - still a comparatively rich post-industrial Western European nation - can still afford to send troops to bomb a bunch of religious nutters in one of the poorest countries in the world but it looked like we couldn't afford to put grit and sand on the road and cope with the snow.

The writing was on the wall when the government and corporate elite organized the mass exodus of cheaper labour from Eastern Europe to undermine our employment market back in 2004 and 2006.

When Boris Johnson was elected Mayor of London I posted that he was a joke, and I've been proved wrong. I can only hope I'm going to be proved wrong again with David Cameron.

And I'm posting that because I seriously doubt that people are going to vote for the country, because, yet again most are going to be voting for the party that Murdoch et al tell them to vote for.

LadyEllen -> RE: Nice and simple..... (1/26/2010 7:51:32 AM)

But Stella a vote for the Lib Dems is a wasted vote, didnt you know? And just because we're in wars we didnt want and an economic mess up to our eyeballs, is no reason to go voting for a party that fought against the former and warned years before the latter and seems to be the only party with a handle on it. Equally so for green issues, fairer taxation, social mobility, PR and all the other issues - its a wasted vote!

Meanwhile of course, voting BNP is paradoxically so effective that everyone else screams blue murder about it. What an odd situation - each Lib Dem vote is a waste, but each BNP vote is a threat to the nation.

But we will end up with the Tories. Registering a company in Slovenia looks more and more attractive in the light of that and the consequent demise of Great Britain into Little Britain under a Tory party drawn from the elite who take interest only in the bankers, bond market and their wealthy friends.

To be fair, the last time it looked like the libdems were a serious threat to labour was 1987, when (iirc) Thatcher won with about 40% of the vote, so you can see why people are worried.
Of course, if Brown hadn't shown himself to be completely incompetent and his predecessor hadn't spent ten years behaving in a way that made the wicked witch look like Ted Heath by comparison, then the lefties wouldn't have given up on labour long ago and abandoned them.
This is probably the first serious shot the Libdems have at getting to form a government, but being the Llibdems, they aren't capable of trying to capitalise on the situation.

...and, back in the day, we even got as far as the Walls of Rome.

Heh.

Us Celts don't like to admit defeat.

oh, and to Marc, if you think it's funny that a sign could be erected that tells a burgular to kill Granny next door rather than the gun wielding chap who put the sign up, yet can't see the joke when you're insulted in a foreign language for not knowing what a phrase is in a foreign language, then you really need to go back to the shakespeare.

..and yup, pen means end, head or top. As in Penblywydd, literally top of the year, combined with hapus (happy) ........well you get the picture.

Let me make this perfectly clear:

I do not think actually putting up such a sign is funny. Give me some benefit of the doubt, will ya? What I think is funny is the idea of the sign. The same way making up humorous church signs is funny. The same way all sorts of humor that would not be funny in reality can be found over all media – including right here on CM – all over the world.

I stand by my theory that most people’s “disgust” with the sign has more to do with their general dislike of the one who posted the picture of it.

Oh, I get the joke, but I can’t see it – as in understand it. Because I don’t speak Welsh (just one of many languages I don’t speak). If you want to insult me, insult me, just do me the courtesy of insulting me in English (although I do have a spattering of Spanish) so I can respond appropriately.

No, actually, I still don’t. At least not an exact translation.
